Tires for 2017 L&K 220 Hatch

Featured Replies

I always fit Michelin. Just personal preference in my case.
P4’S on my wife’s car and PS5 on mine.
although I only run those during the summer and then they get a different set of rims with Michelin alpin for the winter months.

Speaking of tyres on a hatch, 2017, and 220 - I'm really happy with the Continental MaxContact6 tyres on mine.

245/40r19.

Goodyear Vector 4Seasons. Been running them for the past 7 years and cannot fault them.

@JR RS that 245 is an upsize from the original, any rubbing? Speedometer is out by too much?

My car came with 235/40 which are at the beginning of the end, and I wonder for next season is stick to 19s but increase a bit the sidewall, or most likely to downsize to 18" and perhaps go 245/45.

No rubbing at all.

Compared to the factory size (235/40r19), this size (245/40r19) is more comfortable, more affordable, better availablity (more brand choices), and speedo is more accurate.

Many Superb owners have made this switch.

Highly recommended.

If only it was inaccurate for many tyres for many drivers who do not even know that tyres or size or pressures they are at or if maybe driving with a bit of care might suit them and the road condition.

Yeah, I agree, but that’s not a failing of the tyres. People here and elsewhere have slated the Pirelli P7’s as being poor in the wet but, apart from high noise levels in the car, I found them to be fine. I only changed them for all seasons because we travel to Donegal in the winter and weather there can be treacherous, especially on their B equivalent roads. I remember I bought a set of….. wait for it - Infinity Ecomax - on the MKII and they were bloody great. Quiet, great in the dry and wet. I remember I had to do a big emergency stop on the M25, in the rain and there was no drama. They were £50 a pop.

Only if you're heading through the Gap.

The Gap is generally ok, but come off the R252 or drive down Woodland off the N15 to get to the where relatives live in the north and blimey, the roads are terrible.

£1000 for a set of tyres, is that what people are paying now? 🤯

I have run part worns since 2004 and my budget has always been £25 per corner fitted for 4 matching tyres with 3/4 tread depth that were evenly worn, the last bit being the most important, that avenue is now closed to me and paying €400 came as a real shock but £1000/€1160 😬

My Michelin PS5 costs about 180 per corner after discounts. And that's before prices went up. It's probably around 200 per corner now. A good all season can be 250 yes....

That's also due to the 19inch 235s being a relatively rare size. Lol

Go for the Uniroyals. , you won't be disappointed....

I have had rainsport 3s and 4s and they have been a good rounded option , no doubt the latest 5s are just as good or am improvement ..

They also have nice side wall lettering /numbers that show well with a tyre gel/coating etc etc

Hope that helps

While we are at lettering, I've noticed many come advertised as "XL" or "reinforced" blah blah

Weren't these too harsh to ride? I had a set of 'runflats' that came in one Audi, and they were the harshest tires I ever had ...

I recently changed my tyres manually the old school way so had time to compare them, I had bought the exact same Hankook Ventus Prime 3 but chose 95H rating (the homologated load & speed) over the 99H that was fitted to save a few Euros, the old 99H rated tyres were marked XL not the new 95H ones, other than that they were identical.

On close inspection the number of plies and their construction was also identical, same tyres, identical moulds the first made in Malaysia the second in Hungary.

On the road they drive identical, ride, comfort, handling all the same, I think they produce one tyre at the highest rating then create price points for the other identical tyres with different ratings.

Interesting comparison! 😉

Had a set of Continental Premium Contact 7's fitted like driving a different car so responsive, had them almost a couple of months ago they are great. I was having another set of Hankook's on as the Continentals were to dear for me but when I checked price the Continentals were on offer and worked out slightly cheaper than the Hankook's, brought them through Blackcircle. Downside is I dont quite get the MPG as I did before.
