Extortionate fees at Skoda dealership

Featured Replies

I have recently purchased a  2021 Skoda Karok which I believe has got the famous 1.5 TSI engine " Kangaroo issues"  . Skoda UK deny any historical software issues as rumours that I have found on the internet.

They want me to pay £115 diagnostic fee and £150 an hour to investigate and if necessary update the software. My engine software version is 0863 . I have a warranty from the dealer I bought it off but it doesn't cover diagnostic fees or software updates.

Hello, welcome to the forum.

I'm sure that someone will come along soon and post the relevant TPI number for this well documented issue.

Hi from distant memory when Skoda UK helpline was based in Sheffield they would tell you what version you should be on.

There was a version update yonks ago mine is a 2018 car so I think with a 2021you should be on the latest version.

I would suggest you web chat Skoda UK in the hope they can tell you what the latest versions are for your car.

I would keep it friendly and neutral and just ask what the latest versions are.

Good luck.

ECU version 9752 is the last I got, but no way to check.

2019 so I am guessing you should have the "fix" and you now have a feature?

If it is too much you can try a declare car not fit for purpose depending on how long you have owned it.

The thread above is one that I found with a quick search there well could be others.

My car has been ok with it and while not 100% smooth certainly acceptable.

It will be sold in new year when I transition to an EV...

This

would seem to suggest an update from 0863 is available

I would be returning the car and asking them to update the software to the latest issue.

There is no need for them to “diagnose” or “investigate” anything. The issue is well documented and Škoda/VAG have designed a fix. Simply update the software, which they should have done before they sold the car.

^^^^ Plus, do not allow them to fob you off - inform them that you are aware there is in fact a TPI issued for this exact fault.

Good luck, if you have a dealer like mine, you’ll need it - they refuse to do any warranty work unless they get the green light from some almighty controller at Škoda who won’t sanction anything unless the dealer has tried every slippery trick in the book to get the customer to pay………

Did you buy the car from a Skoda dealer?

Has it actually got the kangerooing issue?

No I bought it from Vauxhall Baylis in Stroud. The engine software version is 0863 . The symptoms I get particularly when cold is a varying throttle at low revolutions ( say 750-1200rpm )making the car lurch forward in slow traffic. The power will also fade to nothing if you allow the revs to drop too low in 2nd gear.

I think my response would have been different if I had known you bought the car outwith the Škoda dealer network. I had wrongly assumed you bought the car from a Škoda dealer. The car would then have been sold as an approved car and one thing they do is check for all software is to the latest standard.

I think you may have to engage the garage you bought the car from. This is who you have the contract with. Can Baylis be encouraged to deal with the Škoda dealer to resolve the issue you have ? Either the garage, or you, or perhaps 50/50 share of cost to have the software updated seems the way forward.

That's what I have in motion at the moment,  I did enquire that they may have a good relationship with their local VW Skoda dealership and I am awaiting a response from them. I don't think the warranty covers software updates unfortunately.

The warranty is in addition to your statutory rights.

However, things aren't cut and dried with an issue like the one you described, where it's not black and white whether it's a fault or not.

I phoned the Skoda Head Office and explained the situation but the female employee denied that there had been any such problem ( kangarooing issues ) and dismissed my research as false internet rubbish.

@ApertureS Do you know the TPI number for the Kangaroo issue - or if there was in fact a TPI issued for it?

Those people don't work for Volkswagen UK (all the brands come under them).  They're employed by an American call centre operator, TTEC.  Their entire role seems to be to fob people off.

How quickly Skoda have fallen into the abyss from the days, just 10 -20 years ago, of consistently being voted in the top handful for dealer service, reliability and customer satisfaction………scandalous and sad at the same time?

Yep since owning one of the first Octavias into the country from 1996 I have been a Skoda fan boy and only bought Skoda.

The lads in the office were making fun of me back then as they couldn't get past the badge.

Now my new car arrives in the new year and it's not a Skoda.

The Karoq has been pretty good and I have had no serious complaints but the Brand and dealership base are not what it used to be. VWG are in serious trouble and China is going to bury them if they can't up their game.

So I hope the OP can get the right ECU on his car to mitigate the problem. Good luck...

.....................and your new car will be?, only ask as I'm starting to feel the same as you regarding Skoda/VW dealerships

I'm also in the market for a new car for my wife, but I'm afraid that Skoda won't be seeing my cheque book this time round.  Unfortunately, once your shiny new car leaves the showroom our experience has been that Skoda simply don't want to know. Dodgit and Scarper.

I'm not making that error of judgement again.

Maybe you have a bad dealer, ours has been excellent not that we've needed them often. Our Karoq has been pretty much faultless.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 new version extended range.

My wife loves her Kona and we need something slightly larger for holidays.

The fast charging and features of the Ioniq 5 hits all the tick lists.

I did test drive and Enyaq but the dealership experience was awful.

I don't necessarily think Hyundai dealers will be better but the car was good and time for me to reduce the petrol bill.

Last weekend we took 77 kWh off the grid to be paid 77p for doing so. Agile tariff.

But this is really for another thread. Good luck to the OP in getting it sorted...

I have a Kona EV on order for one of our daughters - on the SpeakEV forum there are one or two Hyundai fan-boys but most people are very unhappy with both Hyundai and its dealers.  I found it harder than it should have been to even the buy the Kona - even our highly regarded local dealer told me several things that were nonsence and they advertised a nearly-new car as having a leather interior (a hefty priced option) when it didn't.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

A colleague at work has a 5 year old Karoq which suffered with the 'Kangaroo' issue and was subsequently fixed with the aforementioned ECU update.

I must admit I was under the impression the 'Kangaroo' issue with the 1.5 TSi had been fully resolved by 2021 and wonder if your issue may relate to the well documented drivability problems which appear to impact some (although not all) 1.5 manual Karoq's?

I sincerely hope you get the issues resolved🤞
