No Communication with Engine Control Module

Featured Replies

My 2004 Fabia 1.2 died on me just past Swindon on the M4 at 55 mph- not nice, especially when it was raining. Cost an arm and a leg to have it towed back home. Before its sudden death, the red engine management light came on, shortly followed by the yellow oil light, then nowt. No fault lights now, but still won't start. Splashed out on a Xtool scanner, and it showed DTC000522 (no communication with ECM), however, I can use the scanner to toot the horn, lights and locks. Tested all the fuses - OK, especially No.56, but can't find the ECM relay as mentioned by another post. Need pointers to possible causes. Thanks

No comms with ECM means no power, ground or CAN connections to ECM or failed ECM - best to get a wiring digram from ERWIN and trace fuses and wiring.

1.2 12-valve or 1.2 6-valve?

Wiring and relay arrangements differ.

Let me know the VIN if unsure which.

Have you checked the engine oil level since its back home.

You do need to ensure the X-Tool is suitable for your model and year (or VIN), I'm sure it is otherwise you'd not have bought it but for other readers, and then always check for updates for your car or VWŠkooda before every use of the X-Tool including taking it out of the box new. Then you want the car's battery and if appropriate scan tool battery both at reasonably good states of charge before using.

Have a look on this chaps' YT channel for info and demos on checking ECM (and lots of other stuff) properly (IIRC he sometimes uses an X-Tool too). - https://www.youtube.com/@mrautoservices7354/videos

HTH. Good luck.
