Help required to correctly identify the paint on my car please?

Featured Replies

I need to purchase the correct colour touch up paint for my car. A while ago I lost one of the headlamp washer covers and sourced another replacement and found a online seller that claimed they had the right colour in stock. At the time, the weather was really suitable for spraying outside, but today it was ideal, and upon spraying the cap it is more greeny than blue.

I was told that the colour of the car is petrol blue, the same as my old one. I can't go back to the seller as it was purchased before Christmas so I doubt that they would replace it, especially as I have now used some of it. The colour on the cap of the spray is about right, but the paint is not.

My Vin number is TMBBH7NPXH7507815.

Hi Graham... Is the code not on the chassis plate in the driver's door jamb

No probs:

Roof color 0F

Exterior color / Paint Code 0F / W5Q

Funnily enough, I think that's the same colour as the Rescue Roomster. 🙂

Thanks Pete, so the colour code is OF, what is W5Q?

So do you know if the colour is actually called Petrol Blue, or not? If it is, then the supplier has 100% missed up, and I may be able to get them to issue me with a replacement aerosol can of the correct colour?

Oh yeah... Think I'm being daft as that's exactly where the paint code is on my mum's Honda Jazz which is the last time I looked for one and a similar place to where it is on my Suzuki Swift.

W5Q is the paint code but it seems to be used for both petrol blue and lava blue...

Which is confusing... As I guess they could be different shades.

I know Honda has two shades of yellow with the same code (got caught out with that) so Skoda could be similar

Oh, thanks, but with the same code being used for both blues, that more than a bummer, it's a recipe for a disaster.

So I wonder if the colour I have been supplied could be lava blue?

My petrol blue superb is W5Q. Isn't lava blue LW5Q?

I agree, that is my colour, here are a couple of photos of the last 2 cars I had in that colour, the first is the one that was written off and the 2nd is my current car along with a photo of the sprayed washer cover.SAMSUNG ES28 - VLUU ES28 4000x2248_026584.jpgCanon EOS 50D 1600x1066_027805.jpgcover.jpg

I didn't know that Lava Blue already existed for Mk2s... 🤔

Jeez VAG are stupid if this is the case. Impossible enough to get a match for the right colour, never mind possibly nit even getting the right colour 🤯

Different names for same colour, I'd think.

Yes, I say to all please always check paint by codes and not by names, and keep in mind hues for the color changes sometimes over years, due to different manufacturing processes. Take "historic" colors and they have a difference over the years, Land Rover's classical "Bronze Green" for example.

Graham that washer cap looks painted in a totally different color 😁

Find the right tone for paint on a used car can be a nightmare, sometimes paints differ from manufacturer to manufacturer and this is acceptable for a full respray, but for partial will be noticeble. Also, paint "fades" over time due to agents and sun exposure, and when you have it mixed it should be "aged" to match the surrounding paintwork - again, not so relevant if you do full respray or in areas totally different say "front and sides, no roof".

But it is tricky.

I've worked years with paintshops and it is a real hassle, sorting out the right mix takes a dedicated person, who has a good eye and precise hand ... the "mix" sometimes includes several different ingredients in precise grams.

It pays also to "prepare" proper the car ... when I had to have the bonnet replaced on my P38 (not the gun! or the plane!), I went to my guy for polish/detail and I asked him to polish the front half of the fenders, then I went to my preferred paintshop and I asked the person to "match" the paintcode to the fender itself - they have different color stamps in the sunlight, turn the car around and we did it again in the shade, and honestly, once everything was detailed, it is near impossible to spot the difference, on a +20 y.o. car.

Also, get always WAY more paint than the one required! An extra always comes handy, especially in the right hue, and it does not deteriorate over time so it can always be used for touching up!

Here is the offending aerosol can, I gave the supplier all the info on the car at the time of ordering as well.

Lr5q is VW petrol blue that was used on certain VWs. It may have the same name but could well e a different shade to the Skoda colour... Hence the different code.

Indeed... And Honda are that stupid as they definitely have two different shades of attract yellow with the same code Y72P, one greener than the other and one pearlescent... As I have examples of both paints due to this issue.
