Karoq bonnet struts fitted.

Featured Replies

Got a pair of gas struts for the bonnet £26 including all required fittings. Took all of 5 minutes to do.

No more lifting the bonnet.

Nice - I must admit, having a 15 year old Golf and a Superb estate, both with bonnet struts - I'm forever surprised by how much the Karoq bonnet weighs and the effort required to lift it..........

Was it easy enough to do? moving from a superb and an A3 that had them, I feel kind of cheated.

Do you have a link?

Hi

I am sure you have the struts upside down. The rod seal needs to be kept lubricated to seal effectively, this can only be achieved if the rod is at the bottom.

I mounted mine on the Octavia the same way as I think it looks more 'correct', no issues after 8 years.

If you consider that the hood will spend practically its whole life in the closed position - with the strut horizontal - the ram will be well lubricated.

Did I need them? No… I Have I bought them? Yes! Followed the link you sent, so waiting for them to arrive to fit. What’s the verdict, mount upside or not?

I’ve swapped them to the piston at the bottom took 2 mins. All the pictures show them that way it was the video fitting where he installed them upside down.

For what it's worth, I reckon that's a more satisfactory way to fit them.

Apart from anything else, I wouldn't trust that geezer in the video - nobody with any kind of mechanical aptitude has thumbnails that long and can't get a nut on a bolt.

Did you swap the ball-ended stud round so that the bonnet end of the strut sits on the outside face of the bracket rather than the inside face as well?

It looks as if it might line up better that way.

Also watch the first 5 seconds of the video of the hood opening. The struts are the opposite way to the way he then fits them in the video.....

That said, looking at the many strut fitting videos on that channel, it seems 50/50 as to which way up they fit them.

Hi

I notice that most of the kits include a strap/tether/cord with eyelets. Does anyone the purpose of this?

It’s got the nut taped to the end. It’s metal which you can bend to hold the nut whilst you screw the ball stud in. You then pull the strap off when secured.

Yes swapped it as it lines up better. Thanks.

Video link to fitting.

Very easy to fit a 12mm spanner x 2

Ordered here took 10 days to arrive.

Just about to order a set and for a final sanity check I tried my bonnet and yes, it is "heavy" compared to other bonnets (from memory) possibly because it is shorter and has less leverage? However, there are some rubber (?) blocks that seem to be for sound/vibration damping

I assume everyone else has these (a 2024 car, 2023mfr) and these struts don't foul these at all?

Maybe so, but that is the way that my 2011 Audi S4 bonnet struts are fitted - though, as I don't use it much and it sits in the garage with the bonnet up to give the "mouse scarer" its best chance to keep field mice away, but the strut does make a lot of noise when I shut that bonnet down, so your point is relevant.

  • 2 weeks later...

Mine arrived today and are missing bolts to attach the fixtures to the bracket that attaches to the bonnet…

Hi

I don't think you need any additional bolts. The brackets are secured using nuts removed from the bonnet fixings.

Looking at the video, that appears to be the case... My set also arrived today and I have four bolts with ball ends. So one each end of the two struts.

There are two nuts to bolt on to the upper end of the strut. Then the "ribbon" with a nut at each end for the lower end of the struts.

The video about shows that the extension mounting arm would use the original nut to secure it.

There are also four washers. These are not used in the video.... Any suggestions?
