Battery cover for cold weather

Featured Replies

I have the Karoq 1.6 TD SE 2019.

I saw a video on the Internet about battery replacement and noticed that my car should have a battery cover, like a cloth pullover that goes around the battery to keep it warm in cold weather.

Mine doesn't have one. I assume it was removed by the previous owner when perhaps the battery was last replaced or removed.

Does anyone know the proper name of this? I have searched the net but only come up with hard plastic covers that sit on top of the battery.

It's actually more about keeping it cooler in proximity to a hot engine.

So I could probably get away with using 4 pieces of styrofoam taped together to create a rectangle to do the job?

As long as I make sure they are secure and cannot fall onto a hot engine.

I think that's a bad idea in view of styrofoam being highly combustible. You're aware of the danger from a hot engine, but there are other possible sources of combustion, especially when the styrofoam gets some grease and oil on it.

You'd probably get away with it and avoid an engine compartment fire, but if you were unlucky, your insurer would reject your claim.

I didn't think of that.

Good point.

Rockwool?

Not checked my Karoq but my Polo had one. It was little more than a thin plastic sleeve & I really can't see it doing much in the way of extra insulation, compared to the thick case of the battery itself. Google threw up this, which suggests it's more relevant to AGM batteries.

Battery Heat Shield
According to the VAG ERWIN Self-study guide, guide No.504 “Vehicle Batteries- Design & Function”, the engine bay is considered a high temperature place for the battery. This can adversely affect the durability of the battery due to:- “Corrosion of the positive grid, water consumption, & self-discharge increase.”. They also state that AGM batteries must retain the heat shields they have been installed with as they are more susceptible to heat damage. Conversely if your car wasn’t fitted with an AGM battery there is a chance that it won’t have the required heat shields & you will have to retro-fit them.

I have now ordered one from eBay. It is like a rectangle bag with a top and strap to lift the battery.

They come in various sizes.

I might have to modify it slightly for it to work properly.

OK, been scratching my head over this. Surely when a good battery is needed, like in the morning, the battery will be at ambient temp, just like the rest of the car. Good old Newton’s 2nd law of thermodynamics in action. Not sure a pretty insignificant piece of insulation is going to bring anything to the party that is cranking a cold engine when it’s a might parky out there. 🤔

My line of thinking may be wrong, that has happened. It was a Tuesday ISTR and raining. 🤣

PS Just seen above it’s to protect the battery from the engine heat, that makes more sense. Must read all the thread before scratching noggin.🥵
