Which maps do I need for my Octavia III, year 2014? System is factory-original, no modifications.

VIN <removed>

Do I need MIB1 or MIB2 maps and system?

Well I suspect you have mib1 high where support was dropped after the 350 release. 370 was the next one where mib1 high got dropped. It had been a combined release for mib1 and mib2 high prior. If you google your image part number for the unit 5e0035020c it seems its supported mib 1 and mib2 however your firmware is 370 which is mib1, so you are stuck. Pretty sure.

  • 1 month later...

I updated the maps on my Columbus radio with the files from HIGH2_P450_EU_202625.zip and everything seemed to go ok.

However, I cannot zoom in beyond a scale of 40km (as indicated by the rule in the lower right hand corner). Zooming out is no problem.

When updating I used the method via the hidden menu by pressing Car+Menu for a few seconds (as found via https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEiHfZZSTr4).
I did notice that it was updating MIB1

Everything else seems to work ok in the navigation system.

Could it be related to the software version? See the attached screenshot.

Who can help me out ??

Regards,

Joost

Yes that's Mr Fix its videos.videos. Vag dropped support for Mib1 so whilst the release is a dual release Vag left out the mib1 components. If you got hardware prior to 2015 it's mib1. 370 after was the change over.

To get out of this mess you need to install an old map that corresponds to your unit. You can use the developers menu which in mib1 isn't locked down. A long press on MENU gets you into a menu where you will see SWDL with any luck. You then play around with that with the 350 map file. Install all. Keep the door open to keep the unit powered up after 40 mins or so you should be OK.

Never used swdl on a mib1 but I know people who have on boards. If like mib2 it should fix it although I do recall a post where there was an issue of a filled memory ?. But basically swdl allows you to go backwards as well as forwards into map updates. 350 is your last mib1 high map release after that you aren't suppose install the combined file since its missing the element you need. It's just a curiosity of how they historically did a dual release.

Best of luck.

Thats the mib2 version of the backend menu. mib1 is similar. You run it with the 350 map download and overwrite the navigation files. Manual and fumbling the menu if mib1 is the same. Ive used the process a lot on a mib2 high for overwriting the maps.

& this is a mib1 video you need to find the manual download menu as the one above. Then you force an update that takes you backwards. Manual download then fumble the bits you want to update and then start. Assuming the manual method is in the mib1 system. When he said two lines on the other video. Manual, select the elements and start.

From 3.42. I can't see the see the "manual" method... but its probably there. Perhaps someone will jump in if going backwards is not a thing that mib1s do.

I'm going to re-install the 350-files I kept from the last update.

The one thing I don't understand is the fact that the maps do work (routing is using the new highway we have since last October), but that it will not let me zoom in.

If it is depending on the version of the software (350 vs 370), it would be interesting to know if updating to 370 is possible....

Its not the software that can be updated to give you mib2 high. Lack of zoom is that it has half installed the map file which is only designed for the mib2 high. The software release code you have on their feels like a map release. It isn't. Map file release 370 and above are for the mib2 high only, prior to that a joint release.

You aren't the first since as I recall an Australian just had the view of Australia with the zoom gone. Basically when Vag decided they were not releasing for mib1 high anymore loading mib2 high files into a mib1 gives you that.

Thanks for the explanation. Maybe it is time to find a newer radio/navigation system. I do like the Columbus though, easy to handle, especially if you know how to use the knobs.

Well, I tried to use the hidden update menu (holding the menu for a few seconds, but when I selected update I got a screen several screens where I ended up in the individual countries, but not able to select the needed tick box at the very end ☹️

However, when I went to the normal navigation screen and selected update in the setup menu, it all started to read and downgrade the maps... 😃

After a long wait the system gave the message it was successful and after an OK it rebooted.

Maps are back again like they were before.
I guess I have to check Google Maps before navigating in order to know the navigation system is directing me in the proper way (like I did the past 2 years).

It would be nice though, to find a way to update the maps, but I guess I have to live with the current situation for the rest of the car's life.

Glad you got it back. Mib1 swdl probably works a bit different to the mib2 version but I did wonder whether it would just down grade. Map updates are useful where there have been specific new road builds or estates. Can be annoying when you are in no man's land since the road is new or it takes you off it when a new road is ahead.

I tend to check Google maps for long journeys and adjust the route if required. Mib2 high maps may be finishing soon in a year or so but we don't talk about it. Use to drive rental cars in Japan where the maps were not updated. Irritating. As navigator you are juggling with devices but I became a dab hand with their coordinator system but first time the car took us to a temple. The rental guy was suppose have put the hotel in. The temple became a way point. Second year I found their coordinate app system that generates the unique code that Japanese satnav uses. Crafty way of keeping competitors out of the market.
