Coolant Loss - 2.0 Estate

Featured Replies

MK2 2.0 Estate auto

Just had the low coolant warning come up so took a look and it was below the low marker (which is really difficult to actually see!)

Honestly never paid attention to the coolant level before so couldn't tell you how long it's been leaking, but had the car since September. Replaced the DSG thermostat just before Christmas so had coolant but didn't top it up as only lost a few drops.

Engine hasn't been overheating, not seen any signs of this until today. Suggestions on common places to look for potential leaks?

^^^ Had to look to see it is a 2.0 TDI.

I'd suggest just topping up with correct coolant and monitoring the level closely.

Very likely it's been low for quite a while and might not actually be leaking.

Really a basic precaution to check engine fluid levels at least weekly.

Thanks @Warrior193 . I've topped it up and will keep an eye on it now but might also need to redraw the level lines on a side of the reservoir that I can actually see!!

That's funny, I bought mine in September too and also changed the dsg thermostat!

I've noticed those lines in the header tank really get effected by the road camber. I thought mine was low but it's just cos I topped it up when parked on other side of the road.

Checked today and it's dropped to just below the low level. Might need some further investigation with a torch I think.

Update: It's definitely leaking - can see a small pool of coolant on the undertray. Just can't see where it's leaking from.

Garage job. Just as I fix one thing on this car, another thing goes wrong... (the coolant warning light came on immediately after I replaced two sticking front brake calipers).

Hopefully its just a leaking hose/union Check the waterpump/thermostat for signs of leaking. Think the waterpump is behind timing etc.

Hopefully @Alasdair1 . I'll drop the tray and have a look.
