Am I likely to have done much damage?

Featured Replies

Looking at that piccy Stu put up, looks like the top mount nut isn't sitting flush against the brace, suggessting the top mount might have had a stripped thread???

Emily, you are a wally...

Also worth noting that the towing eye is a reverse thread - so its not "righty tighty, lefty loosy"... he he

One word.... Stupid!

This thread is getting some serious laughs on other forums!!

What forums???

I feel the need to defend myself. I was only trying to help!! Even if it means a bent strut brace (and hopefully not a bu99ered car) I would sooner be the sort of person willing to try rather than someone who would drive past. What if it had been me stuck in that ditch? I would hope someone would help me.

Emily - we're still waiting for a photo to show the welds on the bracket as shown in the modified photo on the previous page ;)

Think its a bit harsh that people are having laughs on other forums.

End of the day she was only trying to help. Its not like the muppet who paints his brakes  Cant remember the site now.

 at Lummox.

Sorry to here about your spot of bother this morning... :(

I hope you've not done too much damage and that you get it sorted quickly :)

At least you bothered to stop and help though... I'm quite shocked that the guy actually let you try using your strut brace!

Ah well we live and learn :)

Or the one that puts his rear seats down to go faster?

One of the forums I've seen this a link to this thread on also has a thread by someone who fitted a sunglasses holder and now has 'nipple' in his roof where the screw went through.

Thanks Goochie.

I have got up really close and looked at the car at the strut brace. This is the right hand silver lumpy bit close up. Looking at where the brace meets the car, there is a fair amount of buckling. Not sure if this is what you are refering to with the welds. The engine bay looks almost the same, other than the bent pieces of metal along the top of it.

It was a mistake, but please find someone who knows what they are doing to remove the brace and check the allignment before driving to get the drunks that live next door.

It's just that if you hit a bump or brake hard you don't know what the car will do ( if it is in fact damaged ) there could be a car with 10 kids in it coming the other way when you find out it pulls to the right after hard braking.

Emily,

If all it ends up needing are a couple of top mountings let me know. I have a couple here that you are more than welcome to, might help keep the cost down.

From the last photo, the bracket on the end of the brace looks like it is still in one piece.

Its really hard to tell from photos so I think I will (and others should) stop theorising and leave it to someone who can see it "in the metal"

In Scotland Tim opens an account/card with Mint.......

And the balance is restored.

Superb. It's been a long time since I've laughed at a computer screen.

Em: bless you for helping, but next time you see someone stranded, use your AA card and a mobile phone, rather than ANY part of your car. Or indeed you. Or your dog.

Hope the damage is easily rectifiable.

And for Emily's next trick;

I was gonna link that up again, but wasn't that mean

I had to tow a broken down car in scotland... its amazing how many people don't know where their towing eyes were. Searched high and low over the escort (broken down) and couldnt see it for love nor money.... cleverly hidden by a bit of plastic.

Emily.. don't wanna rub salt into the wound... but remember at the BBQ when i showed u were the towing eye was ;)

Ah well!

Yippeee!! :D

Just got back from the TVR garage. A nice mechanic looked at my car for free. He looked at where the strut brace had buckled and said that the give points suggested there was no damage done. He said to try the handeling with the strut brace off and getting another one at some point.

I have it booked in for a 4 wheel alignment tomorrow, if I think it needs it after driving it today.

He seemed surprised that anyone could have done anything to stupid.

Thank you all for your help and advice, I was in a real panic earlier.

Does anyone want to volenteer as the person I call next time I am in any doubt about what I should and shouldn't do on my fabia

You wont notice it until your tyres have worn out unevenly. Take it in for a check anyway.

Did he remove the brace?

So has he taken the strut brace off, and were the lugs on the oil filler cap damaged??

Are you sure you are not confusing me with someone else  ?

Emily- Elizabeth

He did not take the strut off, but he gave me instructions as to how. I am going to get my neighbour Joey aka ASBO (as in B A Baracus the guy who got banned) to take it off.

The TVR man had a poke around the oil hole (or whatever it is called) and said it was fine.

I will get the alignment looked at, and cross my fingers that everything stays okay.

Did TVR man take the oil filler cap off? If not I can't see how he can say it's fine.

We should make a note of this in Briskoda hall of Fame

and from now on anyone doing anything silly like this should get an award called

DOING AN EMILY :P

and Yes Rich you did show Emily where the Tow hook was at the BBQ you showed me also
