The high mileage club...

Featured Replies

If it counts I had 145,000 on my 1990 8v Golf Gti up to 2 weeks ago when I sold it. :(

Owned it for 3 1/2 years and apart from upgrades and servicing only replaced the Alternator and Hall sender.

How high do you think a Mk1 Vrs could go, or would a well kept 100k+ miler be just as good as a 50k model??

The 1.8T is a strong engine - although I've not seen many over 120/130k tbh, not without needing a rebuild. However, that may be more down to how hard they get driven ;)

Your on about the OEM Sport wheels. And when my tyres get low my Estate will most likely be wearing a set.

They are a fine set of rims they really set off the car.

I think the reason there are so many high milage Passat 130TDi's is that they are mainly run on the motorways by reps or are a family car which clearly wouldnt be raced as many of the vRS's seem to do in the "I beat an M5 20-25mph as I was in the right gear" etc.

As an aside i think Jasons should be excluded.. basically because pretty much every "running" bit of it has been replaced...

:P :P This might be the case but for official purposes, should I wish to ever sell  it, the true mileage is something I'll need to disclose, and the mileage of the engine in it now I believe is irrelevant to the actual "car". :)

I wish the general population would think that the age of which a car becomes too old is 200k not 100k this would be a fantastic green measure - it may really harm the car makers but hey.

Also why dont car lease firms offer 5/7 year leases - that would be cheaper pcm as the depreciation wouldnt be so high over just 3 years, this again is a big green policy but would mgt be willing to drive around in a 7 year old car??

Also why dont car lease firms offer 5/7 year leases

I always assumed this was down to only having 3 year warranties? Perhaps with the likes of Kia and Hyundai, we will see this number moving out to 5+ years?

Interestingly, a lot of the aftermarket warranty companies I've spoken to restrict cover after 60k miles, or charge a premium for any claim made after this, therefore they must expect (from statistical evidence?) things to go wrong.........

Doh!!!!!!!!! ... maths was never my strong point!

Ta for sorting that one Tom!

My old Passat 1.8 20v non turbo (which I sold to my dad) has just tilted past 90k and is strong. Our old mk2 Astra 1.6GL had done 115k when we sold it and the engine was still in great condition, never used any oil and was quite powerful yet frugal. :)

Blimey, I can't believe that mine's the 2nd highest mileage Octy on here.

I didn't think it would even get in the top 50!!!

Btw VRS-Tom, it's done 116,500 now!

My Octavia SLXi Turbo (AGU engine) has just rolled onto 152000 miles, clutch went last month but it was the original clutch. And before that i had a 205 1.6 GTi that at 125000 miles started using more oil than petrol so it had to go.

Does anybody know if merc found a car that had clocked a million miles??

Not sure about Merc, but Volvo have one don't they? I'm sure I spotted a 240 or similar in their magazine not so long ago. That might have been a million km though?

Steve

Des would be in with a shot on his red VRS, Andre with his black one too. Both my old Octys would be eligible; the RS when I sold it over 3 years ago had 145,000 on the clock and the silver SDI had 135,000 on it when we parted in November.

For now, I'm not allowed to join, but this time next year I should be able to - got it with 6 miles on it 29 November - now on 28,000 :)

Do you lot who do >50,000 a year do any carbon off setting? How many trees do you plant to help reduce your significant impact.

How many trees do you plant to help reduce your significant impact.

What significant impact is this?

Chris

I do about 40k annual, and in answer to the carbon offsetting - nope I don't. Simple fact is that I need to do the miles to be able to do the job, and by cost of living etc I have no choice but to stay where I am right now.

If I could move to somewhere near the office at reasonable cost, then I would. Unfortunately that won't be happening. Working from home is an option sometimes, and I do, but that's about it.

On the plus side, I use energy saving bulbs etc, and I recycle + drive a derv. Hard to know what to do about it other than chopping in my job though ;)
