The high mileage club...

Engine was still superb when I sold it, body good too.

Too many little faults though - wiper arms, electric window + with the age and mileage was worried about travelling any distance in case something went.

Funny how you see quite a few Cavaliers - but you don't seem to see as many of the Vectra that followed. Vauxhall truly dropped one there.

Well my Mrs P reg 92k Rover 214i is coming up to its MOT in Aug and clearly I dont want to spend a penny on it. Its not had its oil changed in 3 years - infact its had nothing done to it in 3 years.

Last year I checked the tyres and they were beginning to perish on the sidewalls so I shopped round and managed to get a set of 4 (incl balance & new valves) for £120 all in - Arrow speed.

This year I suspect the front pads may need changing, but Ive seen a set of pads for it down at Halfords for £20 - or if I cannot be bothered to get my hands dirty £70 at KwikFit all in.

Clearly I will need to make a decision before the MOT about what to do with it - either I know it will fail and it will be too costly to repair and therefore buy a cavalier/old vectra/old mondy for £500-1000 max and chop it in against that make sure it has 12 months ticket on it & it must have ABS.

This is the issue with this Rover - No ABS, if it had ABS there is nothing wrong with the car bodywork is fine interior is perfect.

If it did have ABS I'd change the pads get some new front shocks as they are pretty weak... like a boat lol (but legal) and just keep running it. Clearly this is the greenest option & better the devil you know scenario.

Theres a guy at work who has a Celica - very similar mindset to yourself, don't spend a penny when its not essential, which is fine if you're happy riding about in a bangor.

I do think its a little strange how you rate ABS over say a quality set of tyres... :rubchin:

Well the car doesnt have ABS and these tyres are far better than those taken off - worn/pershing/buldging on the sidewalls.

I know of one person who bought a Citroen ZX No idea which model for £49 from an auction. He ran it for just over 50,000 miles and he gave it his usual high std of servicing, he topped up the oil screen wash coolant & brake fluid if required.

The only reason he chopped it in was it failed its MOT and needed £100 worth of work doing on it. He left it there and got another one.

From memory he has never spent more than £500 on buying a car but has had Jags, Seven series BMW's Old S class mercs, cavaliers, mondys everything.

He likes to changes cars often and provided they are legal & safe then thats all thats important.

He has a big house hardly any mortgage has lots of holidays to his villa in Greece and he doesnt have a job paying over £40k - why waste money on transport when you forgoe so much else.

Ive had the discussion but what about comfort and quality of life - well his response have you ever driven a 7 series BM/XJ/Merc the big old luxo barges they have everything you could ever need.

I'd love to do that myself but I already have a car and only when I sell it will I realise the financial loss in depreciation.

I'm up near the top with 159,678 on a 2000 model Fabia 1.9TDi comfort estate

Still pulls like a goodun, averages 53 to the gallon and has always been fed the cheapest of the cheap unbranded engine oil. This PD specific stuff is a ripoff!

Yes exactly - I used Castrol GTD or the equivalent Mobil for 60k in a GT TDI115 and my dad has carried on using non PD oil (but good quality oil) and there is NO problems what so ever with the engine.

All this nonsense about it must be PD is IMHO **** and when it was new it forced you to buy it in small quantities from the VAG dealerships. All those company car drivers who may have had the problem well as we all know its down to them just not getting it serviced on time.

There was one chap here who had a megane in 3 years and 60-80k miles it wasnt serviced once nor did he ever check the oil - issue was down to a rather shocking manner in which Fleet was managed. Im sure this happens in many other companies too.

Just imagine buying that Megane - if I were the mechanic I'd rip out all the service history to date and sell it without service history I mean would you buy a car that has not been serviced and has travelled more than twice round the world.

I had the Golf GT Tdi 115 as well from brand new and for the last 80K of ownership used non-branded mineral oil...... never a problem. I did however use the proper gear in my Octavia vRS. My dad and stepmother each drive Fabia vRS's and they get their fed branded VW/Audi/Skoda/SEAT gear.

The Fabia Estate Tdi 100 is the workhorse of the family, it's currently running oil from a black 5 litre bottle with a orange sticker, it's simply called "Motor Oil". I think it's from PoundStretcher. (seriously!)

Strangely I'm incredibly picky about what oil I use in motorcycles:P !

The biggest mistake people always make is overfilling or not checking if frequently enough and its low.

I always use the correct viscosity oil - I mean if an engine is rated at 5W-40 then putting in 0W-40 its just going to burn the oil as the particles are small enough to pass the oil rings. Plus there is no benefit.

There is also No point in changing oil every 5k unless you have a blown head gasket and your not planning on fixing it. Modern oil is designed to last x distance/x duration. Changing it at 50% of that is an extremely environmentally poor thing to do.

Also as I have posted before IF you have a shed & IF you change the oil yourself pait the shed each year with the waste oil & your fence if you have one. This saves on the creation of the outdoor garden paint, is very waterproof, doesnt need to be disposed of & waste energy in doing so & clearly save yourself money by not buying new fence paint + zero chance of spilling it in your boot.

Bought this Mondeo at three years old with 79K on it. Head gasket has gone twice, gap round boot lid slowly getting larger one side  , some welding needed occasionally but to be fair it is dunked in the sea on a regular basis. Car is now basically a banger but still tows my boat just fine & seems reliable as a 'town car'.

As someone mentioned earlier, high mileage reliability is the best kept secret of the canny car buyer.

(I also had a 202k Jeep Cherokee 1988, that was still as sweet as a nut, but I sold it two years ago, so it doesn't really count. :( )

Exactly - too many Fab vRS owners/possible buyers totally reject examples of 80-100k 130PD adverts on Autotrader a silly mistake and its just what the manufacturers want you to believe otherwise their new car sales would drop & youd all start buying from 2nd hand traders 5 year old cars with 100k up.

Brought it just over 4 years ago with 45K on the clock. No major problems, last repair was self inflicted - I went rather too fast through some water in the floods we had last month and killed the boost actuator valve. Thought I'd blown the turbo...

..would that count as an expensive repair??
