There are a lot of flood damaged cars out there at the moment. My dad is an insurance assessor and his company has instucted all their assesors that if a car has been submerged in water, ie parked up in a puddle, where water has gotten into the car, affecting interior, and or electrics, these are immediatly a cat B write off so as such they can be used for parts only. If however you were to hydrolock an engine (depending upon car value, cost to repair, etc) then it may be repaired, so long as the water hasn't got in to the car at any point. If it was to be demmed a write off it would probably come under a cat d or c which essentially means that with a engine swap it could go back on the road.

If it does come under a cat d or c, you should be able to take a cash in liu, and buy the car back, hopefully the deal would give you enough to pay off most of the finance, if not all, then its just weather you can afford to buy and fit a new engine.

I guess its the same story as with bodyshops... eg because its thru insurance they can take the p1$$ more regards to parts it needs etc... back in the days when i had my cliosport and needed a bit of body-damage repairing (fecking kids threw a brick at the car!!!), i took it to a renault garage on two separate occasions to get a quote for the same work, both times the person asked if it was going to be through insurance or not.. and the difference in price was about

I'm still amazed by the number of people I follow on the road who chose to drive through the pudddles at the side of the road when there's nothing coming towards us!

Yes! This was a key point on my AD course. He said, use the whole road if nothing's coming. I put this to the test when I saw the nose of a car peeking out from a hedge, which turned out to be a badly sighted side road. I went all the way over to the other side (straight road) to ensure he saw me earlier, and if he stuck his nose out, I would easily miss it. :) I learned a lot that day.

Well I suppose we will see. I can't do anything now until the insurance come back to me with a decision. I wasn't driving fast at all, out of the driveway and 50 yards up the road. at the point I decided to reverse there was no power so I had a decision to make. Either sit in rising water or try to get through. Names of insurers that anyone know's have refused?

Anyway *ahem* let us know what happens... and if it does get written off, wonder which scrappy itll go to, i could do with some new seats :D

Is this the first SE to go to the scrapyard in the sky and has the register been adjusted yet?

Theres more rain on the way for Wednesday too apparently ....'Lets all take care out there!'

Update.

Engine is full of water and beyond help according the dealer. Also I didnt notice all the water inside the car until I emptied the contents prior to it getting towed to the gararge. There was about 3cm of ditch water in the rear footwells - being on a slight slope the front footwells had drained to the rear and appeared fine.

So its a new engine and carpets.

Garage think the insurers will go for a repair instead of right-off - just waiting final decision of from NFU.

That's supposed to be normal for fabias, although mine hasn't done it yet.....

Hope you get sorted soon.

The water comes through the rear carpets as the front section is about three times the thickness of the back.

Update.

Insurers go for a repair.

Garage awaiting delivery of new engine - on "back order" (whatever that means). Car wont be ready until end of next week at best seemingly.

Luckily I can borrow daughter's car most days.

Just had a thought: Will this new engine be a new one with the stutters or will it run nice like the late 2005 original one.

I'll have to ask the garage I suppose.

Jules

I would have thought it would be another PD130 on the BLT engine code although I'd be happy to be corrected.

Re Stutters its very un likely. It should be a like for like replacement so if you didnt have stutters you shouldnt have them now, also I dont believe the internals of the engine contribute to the stutter, its all to do with the fueling part which shouldnt need changing. It might be worth a polite call to the garage before they get to far saying that you are aware of the design fault in the later engines & you dont want this "feature" added to your car

If you had a BLT engine (Stutter) then you will get another BLT engine in place. I wouldn't be surprised if they only replaced the bare engine and reused many of your original ancilliaries.

VRSTu

My VRS was new October 2005. How do I know whether its a BLT or not ?

The engine number is prefixed ASZ (but I thought all VRS s were)

There you have it then, you don't have a BLT engine :)

What kind of decent spares could you get from a hydrolocked engine? What actually "breaks" :)

Depends on the engine and severity of the damage, personaly I have seen all the following damage caused (not on the same engine) by taking in water-

Broken pistons, rings, bent/broken conrods and crankshafts, bent valves/valve train, bent heads and blown headgaskets, turbo's dont like being full of water, nor do air flow meters or anything electrical!

Update:

Thought I would get the VRS back this week.

Rang garage end of last week and was told that the new engine had arrived and was to be inserted this week. Asked about turbo and was told assessor and mechanic thought it to be OK.

Rang yesterday and was told turbo is kapot too. Will cost an extra

Getting the VRS back tomorrow. New carpets, engine and turbo.

Will have to run it in again I suppose.

Hope it runs Ok, will just have to see.

Jules

Good luck with that. I'd have thought it'll be fine. New engine and turbo may even make the car more valuable?!

Best of luck. Enjoy

Hooray its back and running fine.

Picked it up this lunchtime. All clean and shiney. No smell of pond water either.

New VRS mats on order for next week.

Unfortunately later today the CEL indicator came on - will ring dealer tomorrow. Car running fine, though - its probably some electrical problem - I hope. Could be anything I suppose.

Also I'd forgotten just how dirty the seats were - not been cleaned since new (Oct 05) so made a start this evening. The foam upholstery cleaner stuff seems to work quite well.
