Well, they've managed to do it again. Just got my renewal notice through for my vRS. £290, which I didn't think was that bad (36 years old, 3 years no claims). However, I thought I would just check on their website and see what they would charge me as a new customer. Surprise, surprise it was only £250.

Watch out - Direct Line charges a customer loyalty premium!

Did you ring them up and challenge them on it? They might come down to the £250 for you (or at least meet you halfway).

It's scandalous - but they all do it I think!

Think you've just got to play them at their own game and show them loads of quotes including their own that are cheaper!

I noticed a new one on my renewal this year. A £10 excess on windscreen repair - previously no excess, as has been the norm with most other insurers. Not much but yet another brick in the wall :thumbdwn:.

That is pricey, i'm 30yrs young, with my 28yrs young wife on the policy and its only £240 with Direct Line!!

Depends mostly on postcode. I am also 30, am the only person on my policy, 4 years no claims, my car is only a 1.4, but because I have a Birkenhead postcode, the cheapest quote I could get was over £400. It's a ****er.

Mine was £350 fully comp protected NCD of 6yrs. wife on there too and I'm 27, hers 28 and I live in Ashford.

Ben

Damn... mine's about the 600 mark I think with Tesco and that's with 4 years no claims. I'm 28 and live in the 'pool though... but even so - 250 sounds like an awesome deal. Where can I get me some of that?!

Mines was £900 at 19 which i dont think is too bad, i also have NO NCB and a claim ;)

Mines £638 i am 23 no claims or convictions 3 years NCB with all mods declared......and i have alot of mods

Who the hell are you with?! I'm 20 and I can't get a quote anywhere near that with the same situation!

Think he's on his dad's fleet policy.

Mines £425 with business use - 23 years old and 3 years ncb.

When renewing was finding alot of other insures were only giving me 2 years ncb as they have been 10 month policies.

Here's a suggestion: go to Confused.com and type in your details once.

They do all the searching for you and the results are presented in an easy to compare style.

There is a company called Performance Direct which are currently offering really low quotes but with a high excess of around £600 as opposed to the average of about £250 / £300. Could be worth it, but it's a gamble!

Direct line did this with our house insurance and I just called them, cancelled and told them why. they didn't even try to keep hold of me.

They have also been on Watchdog about it.

Swiftcover are the same. Renewal this year was way too high, although I haven't claimed. New business cheaper though!. They were uninterested and refused to lower quote. Eventually got it for £203.00 fully comp (£150 xs)with protected ncd, unlimited foreign travel, wife to drive, legal assistance, free loan car, and no windscreen excess for repairs or replacement.

This was by far the best quote for a Vrs I had.

BTW I am 44 and a full member of the IAM

I am 32 I have just had a letter for my old Honda Type R, 7 yrs no claims, 3 points (4 yrs old), one claim that was protected due to a tree fallin on my car. quote £740, same company quote for VRS £750???? my best quote so far is about £550, thats with declaring its lowered, but still thats a joke.

Perhaps theres evidence that people who change their insurance yearly are less of a risk?

You have time to look for a better deal and are therefore less stressed.

Just an idea. The rac quoted me an absurd quote last year after i'd been with them a couple of years. Got it for half what they offered.

I check prices all the time with plenty of run up, basically if you fit a type of group they dont like, your screwed, if your a older man who works in a bank doesnt smoke owns his own house, has 3 kids drives a volvo, wears a suit, lives next to a church and has a pet gerbil your fine.

It doesnt matter that he might nicks money from the bank, has a drink problem, house is falling apart from neglect, 3 kids but which ones his, he cant park his battered broken down volvo cos he cant see very well, wears a 30 year old suit, pukes in the churches grave yard after to much gin and finally and most disturbingly has a relationship with his gerbil.

I renewed with More Than online and a guy phoned up to ask why it was done online when we were already with them. When I told him it was cheaper by about £70 he sounded right peeved - something fishy with "new customer" discounts. I found no clauses you carn't do it that way.

Currently trying to get my Fabia into a Skoda garage for a screen replacement via More Than. They don't like you going OEM. They (MT) tried to tell me a screen cost £100 extra for OEM - on top of the £60 excess. Skoda don't want much more anyway.

I lost an engine, gear box and damaged a Vauxhall Corsa hitting an artic axel on the A1M - 5th lane as well! 10 other cars were totalled in the same way. More Than would not put it into Vauxhall and used there own "quality" repairer. They had the car for 8 weeks, lost it at one point and it then had to go to Vauxhall for 2 weeks to put it right. I put 4k on the courtesy car!!!!

LOL, that's hilarious!

But sadly also very true.

I'm a 19 year old student, 1 years driving experience under direct lines other drivers scheme, no claims or points, live in a good area. Yet I still get shafted by insurance, cheapest I could get this year is £1600 with a high excess and I don't even drive the vRS version!

Who the hell are you with?! I'm 20 and I can't get a quote anywhere near that with the same situation!

Damn straight, i'm 21, 2 years NCB and my cheapest is £1000 :thumbdwn:

Gonna shop around next renewal though, but Morethan have been good to me so far :)

Edit: I do live in Newcastle though :P

Went to a meet yesterday and one of the lads said (Who was fully wrapped up in what looked like winter gear) Jesus you're standing there in just a thin jumper?! How come your nipples aint fallin' off yet?!"

I just said: "Uh, Coz i'm a geordie mate"
