New car arrived - boot release question

Featured Replies

The Octavia arrived on Friday. All as expected.

One question - when I operate the remote release for the boot (on key fob) the boot opens but remains latched so I still have to operate the button to open the boot.

Is this normal

Lots of posts on this subject but mine works as follows;

If I I am right by the boot and press the remote I can lift the lid straight away without pressing the boot catch BUT

If I do not lift the lid straight away, within about 1 second, then I have to press the boot catch to lift it

Hope that helps. or search on boot release - you find this is a common question and the action seems standard

it's a common thing. it should be adjusted on pre delivery inspection.

Yes; if you press/hold the button on the remote, hear the click of the lock releasing and wait a second or two, you then have to release the catch with your hand.

If you click the remote and lift the lid at the same time, you don't need to press the catch.

One word of warning; If the car is locked and you have only opened the boot, do NOT put your keys down in the boot, 'cos when you shut the bootlid it relocks automatically (a nice feature but an absolute pain if your keys are locked in!).

There are a couple of rubber bungs on the tailgate that can be wound in or out.

If they are in too far then the boot release doesn't open fully.

If they are out too far then the boot release will work , but it's not as easy to close.

If they are spot on it's a miracle

As said above I'd expect this adjusted at PDI, and mine works fine, doesnt re-latch as appears to be happening to yours.

Cor blimey! I've had my Octy for a year now and I thought that the 'two stage boot opening' was the OEM setup.

I'll have to look at my bungs tonight and see how far they are screwed in or out.

I just press the button on mine and lift the tailgate, no need to use the release handle on the tailgate.

You need to press the key button and hold it.

If you give it a short press then you will hear the click as it unlocks and will need to operate the boot release. If you do not open the boot then within 20-30secs the car relocks itself. It will also relock if you open and close the lid.

If you press and hold you will hear the click as it unlocks followed by a whirring sound as the boot lid lifts about 1cm - it will then lift without having to use the release. The car doesn't relock until you close the boot.

It's not a bug it's a feature - to reduce the chance that you accidentally press the button and leave the car unlocked.

Because of the relock on close you should never put the keys down on the boot floor...

I always assumed thatthe two latch system was designed in. Since if I am close I can press the fob and lift the boot without using the release button on the boot. However, if I press the fob button on accident the boot recatches itself after a few seconds to stop it going up when driving along. I do not find pressing the button on the boot lid the occasional time I do not catch it quick enough that much of a hassle anyway. Or do I have this completely wrong?

hmm, something else the dealer didn't do properly at PDI. I can add this to the variable service not being set :-(

This is really tricky to get right- I thought I had it but the boot wasn't closing properly. I wound them back in and at least the boot shuts every time.

I'll live with the 2 stage opening until I can get it fix it correctly. I'm a practical person but it's definitely a close thing

Thanks for the feedback, will get them to adjust when they bring the other parts of the variable boot floor out.

Sorry for being stupid here, but this thread seems to suggest that if you push the boot release on the remote the hatch should lift itself up with no assistance from me!

I've only had my Octy for 12 days and the boot release button seemed pointless as even if I pushed and held the remote release I still had to be close enough to the hatch to pull it up before the hatch latched again. Should it physically open when the remote release is activated or, as I suspect, have I not understood what is being said?

When the boot release is activated the boot should open enough to not need to press the boot handle or the button agian. The boot will not open completely, just enough to be unlocked. If this is not the case, it's the latch or the strike plate on the car that needs adjusting, not the bungs

That you for clarifying that. If I use the remote release I can grab any part of the hatch and open it fully, but it doesn't lift up and open and does 'lock' itself quite quickly, so quickly in fact that I pretty much have to standing next to the release on the boot hatch to open it in time.

So as pointless as it is, (and based on my understanding of how it should work), mine appears to be functioning correctly.

When I first used it, it seemed to be a spectacularly pointless feature, so much so that the ability to press the remote release and have boot hatch life up and fully open made some degree of sense. I wonder if this feature makes sense on one of the VAG cars based on the Golf MkV and it was carried over to the Octy because no one bother to check if this feature made sense on the Octy.

I'm not sure yours is right,

if I pop mine open it opens and stays open, 30 seconds later the car re-arms itself but the boot stays open!

I'm somewhat confused as to how this feature should work, might have to have a closer look at the manual.

I'm back at the dealer to have a warranty job done on Friday (Interior lights don't work), might ask them if my remote release is doing what it's suppose to be doing.

So why do the bungs have a screw thread on them so they can be wound in and out?

To adjust the shut gaps. The actual adjustment for the release function is done on the latch. I know because I've seen the bulletin. You might get a similar result if you wind the rubber stops out as they'll spring the boot lid open.

Excellent , thanks.

That should do nicely

Ahhhhhhhhhhh.

Wondered why the button of mine was completely pointless. Now I have to decide if it's worth trawling to the dealer to get them to sort it (as mine has always needed me to reopen to boot after remote unlocking it). Or I can just pop down PoundLand and buy a rubber mallet.

Thanks Ants (I've deleted the Guide to save the trouble of reading it again); it all seems to make sense

BUT

I checked and tested my boot last night and found that if you;-

1. press and hold the middle button on the remote for a couple of seconds, there is a 'clunck' and the boot lock is released, popping up maybe 5mm (on the pressure from the rubber bungs, probably) you can then,

2. Lift the boot with the catch released but

3. after about 3-4 seconds there is a 'wirr' that sounds like the boot lock re-engaging, and you

4. can only lift the boot by pressing on the external catch.

So I guess my question is this; is this all operating as it should be or do I need to adjust the bungs/strike plate so that when the boot lock re-engages it is clear of the strike plate catch to be able to lift the boot without using the catch?

Hey two twists of me bungs and old blue's bum flys open at request.

Always wondered what was up with the boot release, now I know.

I wouldn't hod my breath, I had mine looked at and its still the same.

Thats exactly what mine does, I often wondered was that 'wirr' really supposed to happen, its as if the mechanism to hold it open ain't functioning properly. Its a joke that a feature like that doesn't work properly. Funny when mine was getting done a Mk2 Standard Fabia I had a loan of worked correctly as you would expect it to operate.

I went out and wound the two rubber bungs in the boot lid underside out a half turn and it all works as expected. Press the release button then lift the boot lid - without pushing the button under to boot lid.
