  1. The relevant point being what, if any, difference does going from 20 grade to 30 grade at 100C make to the hydrodynamic pressure in the mains, big ends and camshaft bearings?
  2. Does that make more or less difference than the weather translating from a deep depression to a high anti-cyclone at constant temperature?
  3. Cheers for the support; I wasn't actually aware of PetRegs 2014.
  4. I think the OP has made exactly one post here in 6 years, and you've already read it.
  5. Seems avoidable.
  6. Speaking of, according to an Australian environmentalist I know, all EV chargers in Scotland are working at all times, and you are lying about the number not in service.
  7. You actually mean you're trying to climb a 1 in 5 slope in third gear!? I think second or even possibly first is required on a hill that steep!
  8. Other than shipping and import costs (unknown)? No.
  9. @hubsandspokes1987 My immediate thought too. Easiest first check. Does the battery light come on when you switch the ignition on but don't start the engine?
  10. You have something I don't; access to your car.
  11. These are 2 separate components, and indeed do 2 different things. The sensor just measures the temperature (in the case of the engine coolant) and appears to be working correctly. A thermostat open and closes at preset temperatures to control the flow of working fluid through a radiator (which always cools the fluid although the radiator itself can be either a system cooler as here or a space heater like in your living room). I'd say that the dsg thermostat has failed full open. Given that "some guy on the internet" can tell this from your description, you've been to some hopeless garages!
  12. Knowing that from the word go would have taken me straight to the starter inhibit switch. Best suggestion for now would be to try and start the engine with the selector in N and with it in P.
  13. "Combi" is a generic European word for what the UK calls an "estate car" and North America a "station wagon". Touring and Avant (in the cited context) are manufacturer trademarks.
  14. NO!! You should never fill a can over 10l capacity with petrol, and most garages won't let you because it breaks the Petroleum Regulations.
  15. I'm going to guess you've never driven an Austin Maestro. I have, and on a wet road after rain I did the entire trip with the rear wiper on, and the front ones off.
  16. Drill a 1/16" hole in the lowest part of the relevant trim. OK, that doesn't solve the actual leak, but at least it lets the water back out!
  17. Well, if it's only on a cold engine that suggests failed glow plugs, but on a hot engine it suggests head gasket failure. So next checks are whether the coolant remains pressurised once the engine cools down after a run, the oil level rises or the water level falls.
  18. I think "les rosbeoff" might get nicked, but "les Ecossaise" will get off "Scot free".
  19. Much more often the fault is with the level sensor, as I described. You can actually get this "overheating" fault on the first cold start of the day, so you're certainly not going to presume the engine is actually overheating.
  20. I suspect it's the dip switch. Try spraying contact cleaner into it, and then exercising it.
  21. As others sort of say:- Top with known quantity of water to reservoir minimum (borrow a measuring jug out your kitchen if you have to). Now fill with overstrength OAT to somewhere near maximum.
  22. Neither would I, but I first said "drifting down a camber".
  23. OK, which other laws of physics do you pair think are "nonsense"? Enquiring minds want to know!
