Guess the Hire Car.... Mac's 2019 game
Note types contemporary to when this happened; I was booked "A Rover 400 or similar", got to the hirer and was offered "A Rover 400, an Au'tin Montego estate or a Ford Mondeo estate". I took the recently introduced to market Mondeo.

Power steering light.
No problem. I should have said to get the kind where the height is adjusted by pins rather than screws, but the difference is obvious when you see them.

Probably a farewell
Ah well, cheeri Andreas.

One (or 2 since they're usually sold in pairs) axle stands would be better; this is a wheel(s) off job if you have to replace the sensor or its wire.

Does this tyre need changing straight away please?
Which is why I asked; I've had aquaplaning at 3mm left on 205/55R16s. That makes that tyre borderline at best.

You haven't said what size (particularly width) it is, but I'd reckon aquaplaning to be a real possibility.

Power steering light.
Serious answer; I won't get the same sort of experience of sexism as you will.

I'd love to give you a recommendation but am male and don't live anywhere near you.

Car salesman wants my Date of Birth to "comply with FCA regulations "
No idea why; I've had gap insurance before without needing to supply my DoB.

Ding ding ding ; We have a winner (somewhere between "Don't know" and "Are sexist idiots").

I don't think so; you're wasting your time with that garage though.

Thanks Natalie; I've added "check PAS fluid level within limits" to my list of "cheap and easy checks".

Correct usage of DSG shift stick
This is one of the reasons why you have a handbrake.

heater unlock (webasto)
Was the expansion bottle labelled "mit silikat" before the investigation and not afterwards?

Correct usage of DSG shift stick
Well d'oh!!! You're changing from D into N, R and then P, and the car reacts, especially when you select R!

Handbrake switch help
You should be able to see the switch and press it through the handbrake lever hole. The console is held in place by screws, but I can't remember where they are on the Fabia.

As Pete says except that you can get the alternator exciter wire pulling off the contact without breaking. Been there, done that; Knew the base problem and had the car in the local garage at 08:00, back repaired at 17:20, and bill was ~£20 for 30 minutes work (minimum charge),

Any parts from a Jetta/Golf MK5 that are interchangeable / worth swapping?
The 1.9 Di should fire and run even with bad glowplugs, as long as you'll take a puff of white smoke on start up.

@Skezza The Golf/Jetta 5 is more closely related to the Octavia.

Well, the ABS light will almost certainly throw a fault code you can read with VCDS or OBD II, and the most likely faults relate to the wheel sensors, so the brakes will work normally unless you're on a slippery surface. If it's not a wheel sensor, it could well be low voltage for the ABS control unit. The handbrake light staying on might well be the switch being adjusted too low so that the lever doesn't press on it. You may be able to see that down the side of the lever.

@Natalie1982 When the PAS light was coming on, were you also seeing the battery light flickering, even dimly? @Breezy_Pete may well be right about the strip fuzes (but what is a heic file?) OTOH it might also be a bad power connection, or a weak alternator or battery. I'm guessing a bit here, but would advise that a good auto electrician will help; in particular they'd deep load test the alternator and battery for free conditional that they got the business if either needs replaced.

Strange issue
I don't know that this is the case but the throttle potentiometer could be slowly dying.

De carbonising
@LuxoviaRS Probably not. See (1) above. 7_000 (seven thousand) km? That's not even properly run in yet! No idea about job time, or about Strine labour rates. Or indeed which engine you're asking about.
