  1. As @nta16 says, without starting the cold engine, set the valve clearances, contact breaker point clearance and static engine timing. Now start the engine and run until hot. Maybe a 10 mile or so run at your extra-urban speed limit. Now, and only now, adjust the carburettor idle stop to get the slowest smooth idle speed. Do not look at the tachometer whilst doing this (I've done it on cars with no tacho). Adjust the dwell angle to get the fastest idle speed by ear. You don't need a dwell meter. Now slow the idle speed to a slow smooth idle again.
  2. All that tells you is how deep the edge corrosion ridge is. You need to measure the thickness of the polished wearing surface, not the corrosion ridge.
  3. No it isn't; it's several symptoms that you've presumed are separate problems. The boot lock is basically neglect since 2010. The other issues are almost certainly basically all symptoms of a broken wire in the driver's door bellows.
  4. Which transmission? Some automatics wear pads faster.
  5. @Sotac There are no such things as "inner" and/or "outer" track rods. There are inner and outer track rod ends however.
  6. Almost certainly an issue with the temperature sensor.
  7. Thank you. My point was that there circumstances where, even on a hot engine, S/S does not activate when it should.
  8. Teach your great grandfather!
  9. As upthread my objection is more noticing when S/S doesn't activate so the engine keeps idling whilst I'm stationary.
  10. This is surely the Stealer's job?
  11. @Saver Like @SteveTheElder I only really notice Stop/Start in a Skoda when it doesn't activate at traffic lights. It's not going to activate at roundabouts unless there's a queue in front of me; if I'm in the front 2 or 3 cars I'll be on the clutch and in first gear.
  12. They are about correct, except that it's only the LHF inner pad that has a sensor on it.
  13. Really not keen, particularly on the trailing arm in the picture still quoted.
  14. Either the dash shows mph or the car is not legal in Derby (or the rest of the UK).
  15. PlusGas. Oh and using the right size Torx bit.
  16. Clue bold and underscore.
  17. Not dead certain but I think locking with the key disables the Volumatic sensors if you're on a ferry.
  18. OP's description of gearbox now in bold. Point taken?
  19. Ok, back to basics. Does it sound like it is spinning normally but not trying to fire, or spinning slowly?
  20. 1_000 rpm seems high to me on a hot engine. That said, 750 seems a little low with a slushbox; I'd expect more like 850.
  21. There's this thing called a "headlight switch"; alternatively, Scandinavian lights in VCDS...
  22. Unlikely, because the Octavia is a significantly heavier car.
