8 days is far too long imo, 5 is more realistic for most.

Dont forget you'll need to organise a coach to get you round the factory tour too.

5 days imho should be about right too.

I want to go, will see how it all pans out. No rush at this stage I guess. Wont be the same without Steve though lol. You know, last one to the border, always hanging round waiting for him cos he's late! ;) hehehe

Awww to think it was around this time last year... :o

Guess im not invited to the 2009 one

right looking at some of the posts so far, i feel the suggestion from steve about 15 cars is a good idea. if more decide they want to do it then we could arrange two trips to CZ and have them run over a 2 week period so as the first trip leaves to return the second lot will be arriving

Good one mate, I think at least a week but 5 days in the czech republic sounds right.

As we're coming from bonnie scotland our plans would be to stop at SWMBO's aunt and uncle in Slough way and then drive to whereever we are leaving from go on the trip and go back to her aunt and uncles on the way back from prague.

Davy

a 7 day/8 day "trip" would involve around 5 complete days in CZ, so this is why doing a saturday to saturday would probably be best, or sunday to sunday. :)

I think it's a little early to start an actual list at this stage. :) Save that for when actual details are known - Plus, I want the list to be only people who have paid a non-refundable deposit - value to be determined at a later date. ;)

I certainly think we need to allow more time for the trip there and back. Coming back wasn't too bad (despite one half hour break in 12 hours and making the ferry with 1 minute to spare!), the problem was going as I had been working all day and was exhausted by the time we hit Germany.

SWMBO suggests a stop over somewhere, perhaps both ways.

Usually not really feasible sadly. I recommend shared drivers for each car to get around the issue of exhaustion and to share the burden. You really need to do all the driving in one hit ideally, with little stops along the way of course. :)

Fair enough, but she doesn't want to drive abroad.

fair point jase, just thought if we could get approximate numbers we could see if there is scope to run two trips or just the one, so if anyone fancied 2 weeks in CZ they could.

being bored tonight and suffering insomnia i decided to call up some threads from 2007 trip, i cant see prices rising too much more, so ive done a list of stuff and useful stuff for 2009. the TOTAL COST guesstimate at this early stage based on 2 people sharing a car is £1400, fuel making up loads of it, including about 200 quid spending money each (obviously some will take loads others not as much). If there is any mistakes, its cos its late now lol and its just to put the idea into peoples heads how much its gonna cost so they can start saving etc.

ideas/tips/etc for 2009

1. lets go for a midnight ish ferry, then we can get a few hours drive in on less congested roads before we stop for food and let the rush hour go by.

2. walkie talkies

3. journey time will be 10-12 hours

4. meet up in rolling convoy in france, pull up for fuel and rest in germany and before CZ border?

5. continentail driving laws http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/touring_tips/AA_compulsory_equipment_june2007.doc

6. driving in CZ http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/touring_tips/AA_Czech_Republic.pdf

7. make sure you have european breakdown cover,AA do single trips from around £20

8. time zone is 1 hour in front of us and a member of the eu

9. shops etc are shut on sundays, week days shops are open from 9 to 6pm

10. dont forget european medical form thing.

11. you will be looking at around 400 litres of fuel for the whole trip

12 100 euros and 100 crowns seemed to be fine for the other year for spending money etc.

13. use debit/credit cards for fuel you get a better rate.

14. ferry is about £50

15. hotels on last trip was £135 per person with secure parking at 9 euros aday.

£1400 for 2 people from my early calculations to cover fuel, ferry, breakdown cover, hotel and parking.

12 100 euros and 100 crowns seemed to be fine for the other year for spending money etc.

.

100 Crowns is about £3.10,

Also as mentioned before the costs from 2007 were based on 40 Kr to the £, It is now running at 30 so add 33% to all prices if the rate stays as it is.:(

You dont need to go via Brussels. Go towards Antwerp instead. :)

ive spottted it now too, as i said i was tired at the time lol. about 100 quid of each is what i was meant to say.:D

I would usually try and do all the driving in one hit but we are going to need to stop more often on this trip (will have a little baby with us). Theres always the option of meeting everyoen else at the final destination so it doesnt slow the group down.

Good point well made

Just my experience of travel costs in my Fabia vRS - last time I went in July this year I paid £350 from Sheffield to Ostrava (east of Czech Republic) and back incl. ferry and £30/night in Etap Hotel in Koln

I wasn't hanging about (needed to test remap) :D and average computer based economy was about 49miles/g on German roads and 55ish miles/g on Czech Slovak roads - was sticking to the speed limit.

That figure is including a lot of driving in Czech Republic and Slovakia but realistic figure for you diesel drivers considering you will have half day in Mimon :)

September is no good time for me but but things can change.

Cheers

Petr

I'd be looking at going via Erfurt in Germany to pick SWMBO up (off A4)

whereas you guys tend to use the A3 & A6 to cross Germany.

So I'd probably have an extra day stopover there each way anyway.

13. use debit/credit cards for fuel you get a better rate.

Not necessarily true anymore ... as lots of banks have changed their charges in the last couple of years. The "exchange rate" might be good, but there may be a "foreign transaction fee" loaded on top.

well If I'm bad at the ring on GT then I think I will pass on the ring unless a passenger ride comes into the equation :rofl:

I'd be happy to take you round the ring, went before in the mk1, now need another sticker for the mk2...

I always use the northern route, ie get out of France as quickly as possible and through Brussels ringroad, then through Rhineland.
