I just masked up the wheel and put some paint in a modified eye drop container and slowly filled it. Paint stays soft so let it dry a bit then smooth it off with white spirit on a cloth. Cleans up the edges nice but takes ages.

  • I've got just the thing you need for your engine, looks like your inlet manifold is a 50mm jobbie. In which case, how about this to bling up the engine? Smoothed and chrome plated, very nice, wa

Hopefully should not realy need anymore parts.

Require a new starter and alternator but for and extra £8 i can get a 90A alternator over the standard 65A so with my extra electrical goodies i think an extra £8 is wirth it :D

Started on the box today to remove the end cap withthe pin hole. Removed the end cap along with the clutch lever to clean up. Also replaced the clutch claw and release bearing at the same time.

P1000904.jpg

Painted the underside of the box. Requires another coat but covered ok.

P1000905.jpg

New parts all fitted and clutch lever painted black.

P1000907.jpg

Gearbox is all built up ready to go back in.

P1000967.jpg

Head removed.

P1000972.jpg

3 of the piztons had oil marks on them from the leaking valve stem seals. All cleaned up ok.

P1000968.jpg

Bores look ok

P1000969.jpg

Back of the engine all cleaned up and first coat of paint.

P1000971.jpg

Looks like the last owner had glued on the rotor arm to the dizzy so took ages removing it piece by piece. All done and cleaned up ok. One nut on the exhaust manifold is rounded and happens to be the only one you cannot get a socket on it. Will have to cut it off tomorrow. Clutch is toast and the flywheel has seen better days. Will see if it can be cleaned up.

Gearbox side crankshaft seal is weaping slightly so will need to be replaced.

Coming along nicely now. I guess it shouldnt be to long now till shes back on the road.

Not sure how long it's going to be as very busy with work now until christmas so will only get a couple of hours a week to play. Hopefully want to get the engine ready to go in over christmas holidays then back in for paint.

Left side of the front now cleaned and painted. Try to get oil filter and cooler housing off next to finish the block painting.

P1000973.jpg

Still got loads of engine parts that need cleaning and painting.

I'm so glad yours is going better than mine :(

Those bores and pistons look perfect mate

The quality and attention to detail of this project amazes me! I'm sooo impressed! :D And of course, love the car it's self!

Had a couple of hours today so cracked on.

Removed the head lining. Think i will be either finding a good one or may try to recover this one. Couple of cracks in it and covering coming away in a couple of places.

Removed the radio aerial as no longer needed and trial fitted my GPS antenna. Tried the antenna on my satnav and all ok.

P1000976.jpg

Fitted my gear knob and hand brake surround.

P1000977.jpg

Removed the oil filter housing and finished cleaning and painting the engine. Filter housing cleaned up and new oil cooler fitted. Also started to build a couple of things up.

P1000974.jpg

Dropped the oil so i can replace the crank shaft seal. Removed it and lower section has failed. Got my new sump just waiting for the gasket. Hpefully order the crankshaft seal monday as £80 with 28% discount.

P1000975.jpg

Try to get all the bottom end finished next week and maybe get the box back on.

£80 for a crankshaft seal?

Yep. For some reason the seal is no longer available for my car but you can still buy the alloy housing that comes with the seal pre fitted which is odd lol.

Worth trying this site for bits and bobs like that : www.vw-classicparts.com

dont bother trying to do the dealer route it was a nightmare and only setup for the USA and Germany, you can order direct as a private individual though and the shipping is pretty damn reasonable.
