Worst aspects of the Octavia

Featured Replies

On the FL speedo there seems to be a warning light for some knd of "Parrallel parking assist" but I'm not sure if this works either

They always add things for future use

Yeah, I could understand a light being there but not operative for a feature the car hasn't got...but in this case the car does have (working) cruise control and does have a warning light, it's just that it doesn't light up.

I had assumed it was a fault with mine (and Moge's too) but it has now been suggested that is is common to all pre '08 cars...this could turn into a whole new topic!

Say GTi to some one they normally reply nice car, you have to explain the vRS which is a shame as IMO its a better car

  • My main issue with the vRS in particular is the ridiculously high ride height they have as standard.

Some of the best seats I've sat in - must be my shape...

Same here, and I'm a chuffer :D

My Mk2 petrol VRS is the best car I have ever owned but my main to gripes are the much-mentioned water ingress into boot when opening or dripping into car and and on to the window controllers from front windows when raining (if I just cut the ciggies out, I guess I wouldn't need to have it open during such times!). My second gripe is the OEM VRS brake pads - they are good but I seem to fade when braking at speed. Most of the other things mentioned, I either haven't experienced or aren't a problem for me.

In my 3rd week of brand new Octavia vRS ownership now (my first Skoda), and my only niggle is why did they design the heated mirror switch to be on the adjustment wheel and not come on with the heated rear screen like every other car in the world? Most of the controls seem high quality and sturdy but every time I twist the mirror control to the heater position it feels to me like it's going to break off. I'm sure it won't and it's just me, but the knob just has some resistance like it's not supposed to turn right round like that!

Also every day since I've had the car I've had to scrape the ice off the windscreen - my last car was a 2003 Mondeo with front screen demister and I _SO_ miss it! (I hasten to add though that it's the ONLY thing I miss about that car and I'll never buy another Ford).

Like others on this thread I agree that the water run off when opening doors/boot is a minor annoyance (but no worse than, say, my kids leaving lights on in the house) and I have to say, like having kids, my impressions so far is that the plus points far outweigh the negatives!

Most of the issues i have with the vRS have been mentioned already

Boot filling with water when opened

Snow and rain getting in when the doors are open.

No washer fluid warning

No Steering Wheel or stalk controls for stereo

Squeeking dashboard

Engine cover falling off constantly and pulling the dip stick out with it

Other things

Can cooler that the Fabia vRS has

False floor in the glove box to put Handbook in. Fabia had this

Roof bar mounts on the hatchback are rubbish and cause the car to leak water. And they destroy the door seals.

Gear knob paint flaking off. Im on my 3rd one in 30k miles. The Fabia one lasted me 50k miles without a mark on it

Worst Car ever in Snow

Car mats are rubbish quality compared to the Fabia vRS mats

Apart from the above i do like my car and i would buy another, but id buy the estate next time!

Same here, and I'm a chuffer :D

I am not small 6,2 and 16 stone, the problem I have is that there is very little support under your thighs and the seats are not long enough here, the arse area is also narrow for me and the lumbar support does not work for me either, I have a bad back and have suffered a lot with this car, never happened in another car. I am going to test drive a FL and see if they are better, or a superb. I wish I could find some Audi seats here in Madrid. :(

Apart from that it is a good car and got me past tons of cars stuck in the snow this morning and the DSG helped a lot.

My major gripe and the reason I now have a Mazda 6 2.2 Sport instead of reordering another VRS is the lack of BT and MFSW on manual transmission cars. !!!

And my previous 2007 VRS tdi had a cruise control light that lit up. The cruise was factory fitted though.

I noticed my dash has what looks like adaprive cruise control warning lights (though they may be auto park lights, they look like chevrons with a car infront of them) and also what I assume to be either an 'off road mode' or hill descent control mode light.

I would be interested in retro-fit/activate hill descent control / off road mode if it were possible.

My CC light works, but then it's an 09 car.

Don't like:

seat squabs a little too long - they dig in the back of my knees as I have short legs.

the silly legal requirement for headlight washers with xenons. I feel bad spraying everyone else on the motorway when all I want to do is clear my windscreen.

windscreen seems to steam up badly.

Like:

Most other stuff.

The engine oil dipstick on my octavia 2.0 tdi 2006. It must have been designed to make it very difficult to read and skoda said i have got to live with it. With a dipstick with balls!

Can somebody tell me that this is not true and there is a way out.

I find the seats to be crap in my vRS

Love my petrol vrs to bits , but ... a pillars are a bit heavy and can obstruct at junctions , the light switch when lit , reflects on the side window and mine seems to have an inordinate amount of condensation inside, dont care about mf wheel etc as i can reach stuff , brake pads do fade when used hard tho .

Forgotten about that. I think I'll file the coating off the marked part with a diamond nail file.

For me it's the amount of condensation on the windows - there are no leaky pipes or damp carpets either

The rest of the package I can't really fault

After only two weeks of ownership one thing that I have noticed is the hard base surface of all the multitude of storage bins. Every time you put something in any of the storage compartments including the glove box it rattles!

It would take all of about $1 for Skoda to add rubber base mats to these compartments to to stop that noise but maybe there's an opening for me here to start a little ebay business. :-)

On my '04 plate Touran, there are little rubber mats in the base of most of the storage bins. In the new "facelift model" from about a '57 plate, VW have stopped putting these in. The complaints on "clubtouran.net" have been fairly vocal because of the same problems.

So it's not just Skoda cost cutting here - it's other brands in the group as well.

Pop down to your local Maplins (or buy online) this:

Anti Slip Rubber Mat for a fiver

You'll have enough to cut your own for a whole street of cars. Very useful stuff. I made a template to fit the complex shape inside the Jumbo Box. I can scan it and email it if you like?

Golf-Fiend - I'd be interested in the template for the Jumbo Box if you wouldn't mind emailing in to me?

i really really wish it had electric folding mirrors, simple lil thing but dead handy.

Aside from that the lack of steering wheel controls is a bummer. I was told by my dealer that Skoda consider it unsafe to have steering wheel controls on manual performance car. What b/s! My wife's Audi S3 with the 188kw engine and manual trans has steering wheel controls and my mates MkV Golf TDI sport with the same diesel engine and gearbox as mine has steering wheel controls.

These are so that you buy an L&K next time, as mine has them all. A lot of the issues raised are available or are standard in the higher specs.

My latest Octavia does have a cruise control light whereas the old one did not. It also has the extra silly wipe disabled as standard (Thank goodness). Some commented on disabling headlight washing - maybe if you are having trouble seeing through your windscreen, headlights are mucky and either dim or are spreading the light all over and into oncoming faces?

My gripes are

the boot / waterfall issue

tyre noise

the impossible to read dipstick.

mucky rear view mirrors, that seem to collect dirt. Surely there has to be a way in this day and age. Maybe ultrasonic clearance like my Canon SLR has for its sensor.

no CR 140 or 170 or higher engines yet

fitted rubber mats that slide around as they are not fitted with any sort of catch or hook

lack of xenon main beam

What I would like as options:

adaptive cruise

electronic start assist, a la VW Passat. In effect an electric parking brake, but to go you just accelerate and it switches off automatically.

4x4 with CR170 engine with auto with L&K

or if not, then at least have the 170 engine available on the L&K. I love my electric seats, as i no longer have to spend the next 3 days getting my seat back to its original position after SWMBO has driven the car.

But would I buy the Passat to fet these things? NO, its too big. PLEASE Skoda do not increase the size of the car when you update it.

Oh no. I hate those.

Steve

Given the VFM the car represents, only two small gripes:-

---the clutch pedal (and the brake pedal to a lesser degree) is too high, they would be far more comfortable for me if they were lower, at a similar height to the accelerator.

---traction is poor on hard acceleration, certainly worse than two other fwd cars I've owned of similar power (Accord type R and Leon Cupra R).

+1

+1

+2 - Awful.

The boot full of water when opening the boot and large amount of condensation are very annoying, ride height is too high, front end not aggressive enough (FL solved this but too late for me! ) . Love everthing else, and I'm being pretty negative here, it's great car. My friend can't understand why there are no controls for the radio on steering wheel but I find I can reach the controls perfectly with my arm and hand combo  . Would love to see a 4x4 vRS next time around.

This may sound a minor thing and I am sure that it can be programmed out with VAGCOM but what really irritates me is the seatbelt warning bleep.

The fact that there is a bleep is not what annoys me, but because I drive a diesel I have to wait for the glow plugs to warm. The sensible, logical and quickest way to get in and start the car would be

1. put key in

2. turn ignition

3. whilst waiting for glow plugs to warm and warning light to go off, use the time to get comfortable and fasten seatbelt

4 start engine

5. drive away.

but to avoid the annoying bleep I must

1. get comfortable

2. fasten seatbelt

3 put key in and turn ignition

4. sit there doing absolutely nothing for 5-10 seconds whilst glow plugs warm

5. start engine

6.drive away

I know it is such a minor thing but it really irritates me.

Other than that, my octavia is fantastic!
