I also just got this in the Post B) B)

Its a SIM card for midgets? Do I win a prize?

And I thought my life was dull and without meaning or purpose.

well iOS4 is out...

ive already had a phone call from a mate because its bricked his 3GS... well done apple emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Edit: in a even more ironic twist, if its hooked upto his PC it upgrades fine, but as soon as he connects it to his macmini and tries to restore it.. it bricks it again... emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Sweeeeeet :D

i'm trying to get my phone upgraded to IOS4.

managed to download the software after about 45 minutes, now every time i try to install it, it extracts the software for a while, starts to back up the iphone, it does that for about 15-20 minutes and then stops doing anything. whats going on? :(

Sounds like most people having problems are downloading iOS4 using a PC. Maybe Jobbs is messing with you for not buying a Mac, ha-ha. Updated my 3GS using my Macbook and have had no issues whatsoever. Liking the new camera functions, with zoom and a much faster shutter speed, but as for folders, while I messed about with it, I haven't even filled all my home screens, so don't know when I'm ever going to use those. And as for multitasking, don't really know how that all works. Don't use mine for listening to music, so will have to try it out at some point. It works just fine, but the upgrade isn't exactly blowing my mind. Will have to see with extended use.

I had this and after several attempts I deleted the apps and music from the iphone and hey presto, the backup worked. Of course, doing this means that any apps that had settings set ned to be re-setup as the settings weren't backed up...

Had real problems putting the restore back onto the phone though. Most pain I've ever had upgrading so not impressed so far!!!

This was using a MacBook Pro with iTunes 9.2

I can't see how anyone can brick an iPhone as you can always restore them by putting it into recovery mode.

If the iPhone was JB before maybe that is the cause of the problem as the JB may have been removed.

I am impressed with a few features of the new ios. Will wait and see how good MultiTasking is once the devs make the apps to support it.

Downloading and installing now. I've only 500mb left before I started! Fingers crossed!

Updated my 3GS & SWMBO's 3G last night. Interesting how the 3GS was the usual update, whilst the 3G was done via "restore".

Good job i'd read this on some website before I'd started, as it would have given me a shock otherwise! My mate swore that it was bricking his 'cos of the restore thing, until it restarted!

Anyhow, all seems to be running smoothly so far

Downloaded and installed it. It does take some time, esp to restore your photos/apps e.t.c.

It feels ok, slightly slower so far which I'm a little un-happy about. - 3G.

Interesting, SWMBOs 3G seems "nippier". Safari seems to load quicker & scroll, & change screens also seems smoother. There again, she still has lots of space available as she doesn't have "loads" of apps, songs, films etc, but does have a fair few photos!

The backing up takes ages! It may seem as if its crashed but it hasn't...just takes alot of time :)

I gave up after it had been running for over an hour and the progress bar hadn't moved for about 55 minutes... Deleted the apps and the backup took about a minute...

O right..... I take my statement back then :p thats what It was like for me anyways :giggle:

Well i've just finished upgrading to iOS4 on my 3GS and from start to finish it took around 50 minutes.

I had recently updated 2 or 3 hefty apps so when i connected my phone to iTunes it had an initial 10 minute or so back-up.

Then download of iOS4 took 15 mins on 4meg connection

Install took 10-15 minutes

Then a second back-up took 4-5 minutes.

Now with regard others having issues with the back-up....... Do you regularly back up your iPhone anyway??? I only ask as i tend to carry out a back-up at least 2 or 3 times a month in case it ever gets lost, stolen or damaged. I got this from a friend who had his nicked and when the replacement arrived the next day he was able to get the new phone back to how his original one was a week or two before it was nicked. Doing this also means that the back-ups are pretty quick as it isn't also transferring new apps, music, movies etc, etc, etc.... over too during the back-up.

If you don't carry out regular back-ups of your iPhone then the backup process will take quite a long time, Hence when you uninstalled apps etc... it went through the process very quickly.

The times i have given above are for a 16gb model with 9.13gb free space. Also the hefty app updates i talk about recently installing were in the region of 100meg each. I know when i was downloading the movies etc... with the "12 days of christmas" app the movies were taking nearly 10 minutes each to back-up.

Hope this maybe helps or clears things up a little for people.

Cheers

Dave.

I normally back my phone up 2 or 3 times a week, if not more.... I'd also run a backup before clicking on the update button

I'm an IT consultant specialising in Backup and Disaster Recovery so would look a little silly if my stuff wasn't backed up on a regular basis emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Yes.. the install on the mac was failing even with the phone in DFU... worked fine on the PC! and no its not a JB issue.

multitasking.... the fact that apps have to officially support it is already a fail in my books... "quick switch" apps.. wooooooww!

My only options with the calendar syncing (which is very important as a police officer as my duties change almost daily and I need to keep updating my diary) would be to implement an exchange mail server, which would cost a fortune to run.

Set up a Googlemail account. Then you can sync, contacts, calendar and e-mails through Microsoft Exchange, and it costs nothing. Calendar can be synced to your outlook calendar via Google Calendar sync.

This set up works great for me. Updatemy iPhone calendar and my online Google calendar is straight away updated then when I use my PC Outlook is synced to my online calendar.

so i finally got ios4 running thanks to a mate letting me use his Imac. loving all the new features, especially the lock orientation, multitasking and the toggle black white thing is cool.

multitasking is good if you want to load a web page while doing something in another app, simply double tap home and you can shift abot between them, and sdtuff on safari for instance keeps loading.

locing the smooth new transition between lock and homescreen and between pages when multitasking.

You went and got a box! emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Hmmmm can't seem to switch it on. The box comes with free cellophane protector which I'm leaving on to stop it from getting fingerprints on. Those icons on top of the box don't seem to work properly either.

Just don't hold it in your hand to make or take a call :)
