Quitest Vrs tyre suggestions?

I have a Vrs estate & it suffers from the standard feature, excessive tyre noise!. I have soundproofed the 'boot' floor, under rear seat, have a rubber boot mat, but on anything other than pristine road surface , which means 99 percent of the roads in Beirut road surface Britain!,the tyre roar is worse than a poverty spec Ford Escort. I'm due some new tyres, my local place suggest that Michelin Pilot Primacy, at 120 per tyre fitted, are good and quiet. Are these the quitest, any other suggestions on a quiet tyre choice?. Thanks in advance...

Quietness isn't a top factor for me when choosing, I tend to be looking at grip levels as well as trying to get longevity at the same time! If they're quiet then that's a bonus :yes:

But have a look at Tyre Reviews - and then maybe look at their 2010 Tyre Test - this will give you a fair few contenders and the table will list noise levels.

17's or 18's?

I'm running 17's 225/45/17 and the road noise is not too bad :D A bigger profile MAY help but you'd need to ask the tyre place.

i think the bigger the tyre, the louder the noise, ive gone from 16's {mondeo}, 17's {vectra}, and im on 18's with my vrs and it is noticeablly louder, than my previos 2 cars

On my Vrs Estate I've changed from Contiental Sport Contact 2's to Michelin Pilot Sport 3's. There has been a noticable reduction in the noise levels and I've only changed the front tyres so far. Downside is they are not the cheapest, think I paid 146 each (for two).

The problem here is, the older the tyre, the louder they get (because of the compound getting harder, and the wear causing more (solid) rubber contact). New tyres are almost always a lot quieter.

Dunlop SportMaxx was quietest when new on my car. Followed by the Michelin PS3 and last Conti SC2 (worst tyre of the three, hard, loud and bad when wet)

Problem with the Dunlop is the negative profile on the sides, causing noise when getting older and a tendency to sawtoothing. And if so, they will be the loudest....

According to a recent Auto Express tyre test (which I think was carried out on a fleet of Octavia diesels) it's the Kumho Ecsta Sport KU31 and they were about 3 or 4db quieter than the noisiest tyre on test.

I am running KU31's all round and they do seem noticeably quieter than the Michelin PS2's and the Falken FK-452's that I have used before.

I have just replace the 2 front potenza's with Vred Sessanta's so now the front is quiet but the back is still noisy :) will be replacing the back ones shortly too

good tyre all round as well as being quieter

I do about 18K a year and had Contis on when first bought my VRS estate and tried vreds, much quieter but life span awful (6500) Just changed all four for Michelin Primacy HP. Quieter in my opinion as the vreds and as good handling. I had these for £110 per corner and the Vreds quoted at £95. Michelins have good name for tyre wear (20-25K) so better overall value than the Vreds.

PS had a short time with BF Goodrich, stay away!

Thats WHEEL size increase, not tyre PROFILE increase. I've been lead to believe the bigger the WHEEL the more noise...............could be wrong though :rofl:

Just wondering what price range for Vred Sessanta's as I need a set very shortly

I got em on www.eiretyres.com ( uk version www.mytyres.co.uk) but the 225/45/17's i got were €106 each inc VAT and Delivery then the local fitter charged €15 a wheel to fit em

camskill.co.uk also do good value in tyres

Go to www.blackcircles.com I'm using Michelin pilot primacy and there quiet, when there ready for replacement I'll switch to it's replacement which are the Michelin primacy HP. Blackcircles is good IMO as you pay them and pick a garage near you who they work with and you pick date and am/pm slot and just sign a form when done for the garage to claim there money back.

I just had 4 x Falken ZIEX912 225/45/17 XL delivered from Camskill to my place of work in Co.Meath for 275euros. Now thats some value.

Hmm. What have you used to soundproof it?

One of the reasons that I replaced the standard wheels and tyres on the Greenline for the VRS wheels (17") was to take off the Michelin Eco tyres to quieten the car down and so far it's made no difference. I've since replaced the worn tyres that were on there with Pirelli P Zeros on the front and Michelin Pilot Sports on the back (part worn tyres for £150 the set, fitted which is why they're not all the same) and it made no difference.

I've now got a load of Dynamat Xtreme on order and am planning to do the boot floor and sides, and do the complete floor under the seats etc. If this doesn't help I'm going to be mightily fed up. Quite why it's noisier than my 03 Octy I just don't know. Having to take a new car apart to fit sound deadening is just daft

This weeks auto express has a tyre test.

Shows a Octavia as the test mule!

May answer all the questions.

I saw that too. Have a VRS on order and tyre issues is on my list of concerns, followed by paint problems.

Decided not to send a post until my copy arrives on Wednesday, as do not know what size / brands of tyres on test.

My mistake!

Got my copy of Auto Express today. tested 225 /40 R 18 on Octavia FL. Test was at Continentals proving ground, the Contidrom

Overall verdict

1. Continental Sport Contact 3

2. Michelin Pilot Sport 3

3. GoodyearEagle F1

4. Dunlop SP Sport Maxx TT

5. Hankook Ventus S1 evo

6. Pirelli P Zero

7. Vredestein Ultrac Cento

8. Uniroyal Rainsport 2

9. Bridgestone Potenza RE 50 A

10. Sava

11. Maxxis

12. Runway

Continental was best all rounder. Pirelli best in dry but not so good in wet. You need to read tyre test to get full picture.

I also emailed Auto Express last week and got this reply today from Kim Adams, Product test editor

Not sure I can help re wear as this is not part of our test as it is pretty much impossible to do without actually driving the miles. I have seen Michelin-funded but independently tested research done by TuV Sud that puts the French company's tyres way ahead in longevity compared to premium brand rivals. The results also support anecdotal stories of Michelin's wear resistance.

As a petrol Octavia VRS owner I have been more than happy with the ContiSportCOntact3s (18-inch) that I have been running now for several thousand miles with little sign of wear.

If wear is your prime consideration and Michelin can be specified I would go for them. I think Continental provide a more all round approach.

One thing I have never heard of is linking wear characteristics to tread pattern as I believe the key factor is compound when it comes to tyre life

Would have been be good to see other rival brands, but interesting all the same.

Wonder what Skoda are currently / plan to fit to latest build cars?

The Pilot Sport 3 is a good tyre, but not as long lasting as the name Michelin should suggest.

It will be in the same league as the Conti CS2 and the SportMaxx.

I didnt drive the PS3 that long to see how it will last.
