Fuel Filler Cap - Problem Removing ?/

Featured Replies

Has anybody had trouble removing the fuel filler cap.

I filled up my vRS for the first time - had a terrible job getting the cap off at the garage - but I managed to fill up.

Then at home it seems to not want to come off again ?? - at least its full of fuel.

Removing the Filler cap was a bit of a 'Krypton Factor Challenge' the first time I did it!...   But it wasn't really that hard to figure out!, only took me about a minute!!   On the 'Key bundle h

Not sure about this but if you mean the screw on and lock with a key one nope. Then again its the same as I had on my old fox so its second nature to me now though it does take some getting used to.

OK sorted it - when the cap is loose its locked , when its tight its unlocked , it was just very stiff to turn to remove the cap :D

Feel a bit silly now

Will post some pictures (of the car) when it stops raining.

Yep , that makes sense.

The guy at the garage thought it was funny - new car , unable to get the fuel in !

Its naff for a car like this. Cap should not have a lock but the central locking should lock the flap.

The one bad point I can find on day one of ownership.

Yeah , thats how it should have been and it would have saved my embarassment !!

I understand how the cap works but its very very stiff to turn when unlocked so much so my mother who drives the car a lot can't open it!

Your Mum is pulling a flanker so she doesn't have to fork out for petrol!

Thank you for that....must give that a try....just spent about 5 minutes on a busy forecourt trying to remove the fuel filler cap, cutting my knuckles, swearing etc....what the hell was wrong with the system on the MkI!!! Also very annoyed having to insert the key as I'm more likely to scrape the paint with the dangling keys!

could it be a safety feature so you need to stop the engine and take the key out the ignition in order to fill up.

or perhaps cost cutting / easier to make this way

So...I'm stood at the petrol station, take off the flap, plug in the key and turn the key. Try to turn cap, nothing happens. turn key other way, thing just spins without releasing. It took me AAAGES to get the fecking thing out!! At least i'll now know for future though. Only got the thing today and WOW!!! So happy!!!

not had a problem getting it off, but compared to old ibiza i have noticed its a lot stiffer (harder to turn)

I have no problem removing and refitting the cap

My problem is, coming from a Mk1 vRS I forget to lock the cap afterwards and just close the flap

I also agree on the point raised about dangling keys scratching paint, I am going to do it

They should have atleast made it auto lock so that one wouldnt need lock again with keys

Thanks for that..just tried and it's really not that difficult... :) :) :)

My number one hatred of the car is the fuel cap !

Glad you got it sorted.

I'm with bullyboy!

Only had the thing a few weeks and truly hate the cap! Look such a goon when you can't open it!!

Yep the fuel cap is a real pig; easy when you know how but still a pain. Why on a (taking my estate into account) a near £18k car they cant just central lock the flap is beyond me. Very 20th Century!

Dead easy to work out how to use it. The safety cap is designed to ensure the driver always takes the key out at the filling station, thus preventing car-jacking or engine running on fill up. Personally I love the system

The central locking flaps are very easy to circumnavigate... Just a small lever will do most! With the (Again) High price of fuel, the locking cap IS much safer or perhaps a locking flap WITH a locking cap... Belt and braces, as it were!

That said, any thief worth his salt will just spike the tank and take what he needs, either leaving the rest to flood the floor or plugging the whole to return to a vehicle he knows!

Don't think that can be true. If you dont lock the cap after screwing it back on it stays unlocked, i.e next time you fill up, open flap unscew cap. No key needed.

What annoys me is the fact theres no were to hang the cap when you remove it from the car, I mean wtf is that? I have to put that plastic cap to hang on my nice shiney paint work? :(

Or am I missing a catch to hang it on?

The filler cap will sit on the flap that you open. There are two little cut-outs on the rim of the cap so it will sit nicely on the top edge of the flap when its open so no need for it to hang down loose onto the paintwork.

Agree with the others about the mechanism being awful. Everytime I try to get the cap off it feels like I'm gonna snap the key its so bloody stiff... :giggle:

Jesus, seriously guys if you cant unlock a simple filler cap should you be allowed to drive?! I mean its so easy, you put a key in and turn it, you then remove the keys so they dont scratch your paint, remove cap and place filler cap on the flap... fill up, replace cap and put the key back in the hole and lock it.... now thats pretty easy eh?
