My vRS has a drink problem

Hi guys, been reading the thread as in fact, high oil consumption is my last prejudice/fear before I place the order for a vRS so I have some issues to discuss.

1) Have we agreed/verified that the run-in style affects later oil-consumption? Furthermore, what are the different styles and how they affect accordingly? I have understood the following but please correct if necessary!

a. Case of Gorebrush: The car was run in extremely smoothly during the first 3K by 1st owner, maximum 2500-3000 rpm I take it?? (Please confirm!) So now it's using 1L per 500 miles (nearly)

b. Case of sharkrider: The car was driven normally from day one, I suspect even 5500-6000 at times? (Please confirm!) Now it's using 1L per 5000 miles (nearly 10 times less!)

c. Other run-in styles between the two, consumption is between the two.

Are the above correct?

Also, could it be a particular problem of the first vRS that came out? I mean do we know of a vRS manufactured in 2011 that presents the same issues? Sorry for probably long message but as I have nearly made up my mind towards the RS, I am quite worried of this possible issue...

Thanks!

An 84 year old gentleman had my car before me. I suspect that he may have been very smooth with the car.

In contrast, I am not smooth. I'll wait for it to warm up, but I am certainly not afraid of red lining this puppy.

I avoided Sports Mode until I had done 1500 miles but wasnt afraid to sink the foot when the occasion allowed I have done 9000 miles now and I have put in 1.5 Litres of oil in top ups ( 5w 40 all the way.)

I wouldnt worry about the oil situation tbh

By the way the car is proper fun I really love driving it if I still had the money in my pocket i would not change my choice.

For the money you pay it really is quite extraordinary :D

I paid 13.5K for mine and I love it!

You are so lucky guys - in my parts it comes around at: 15.5K without extras.

In sweden, the standard car comes in at 18.3k£ and fully equipped your looking at 21.2k£... without the choice off either stationwagon OR navigation :@

Well my car would be nearly £18k if I'd bought brand new and paid the full vat so don't feel too bad!!

mine had 14 miles on it when I was bouncing it off 7000 revs down the first slip road I came to ! lol......

since the service 3000 miles now (13,000) and no oil used in that 3k...........

Ok, so I guess it is better to run it in a bit hard and not be over-protective (always within the limits of common sense). However, I understand it is also a bit of a jackpot to have extremely high consumption, and not really something which is caused by a specific driving style....

yeah I think how you run in makes a bit of difference (just drive "normally") but I think the one with the highest consumption on here, well we don't know how that was driven... maybe never even had full throttle, and the engine diddn't 'seal' properly, but even that is still within skodas guidelines, so i guess no-one really has a serious problem...

I'll be switching to 5w40 as like others have said, it is fine to use it. May take a while to know the results though :giggle:

Just rung the dealer... they've basically said

"Don't drive the car, get it recovered"

Aww damn.

Sorry you lost me... regarding what they said that?

Basically I told them that I've put in 5L of oil over 2500 miles and they've told me to get to the car recovered through Breakdown service.

They think the turbo's on the vRS can be faulty leading to excessive oil use.

Though they did also say that 1 litre of oil per 600 miles was also ok!

More news as I get it.

sorry to hear that

Me too!

I will wait and see what the technician says before I do anything else.

Technician has been and gone, thoroughly nice chap.

He confirms that I probably do not have a turbo failure as there is no oil in the air intake pipe or on the exhaust.

He says that there are basically two problems: -

1. The dipstick is too sensitive, therefore I'm only putting in 1 litre and getting half way - which is incorrect

2. The car is definitely using too much oil

Going to book it in and get the supplying dealer to look at it, and see what they say about it.

hope everything turns out ok... your car is running fine though isn't it ?

For an update: I have just checked mine again since I have the big weekend comming up with the epic NW drive, and 3,500 miles since the first service (and I haven't put any oil in) and its showing 3/4 on dipstick (although I have a slightly inclined drive) may give it 200mill or so before the big run , it would be my first (little) topup since the service.

Nice.

The car is fine. I explained that an 84 year old put the first 3k on and the technician grimaced at me lol

He said that engines when they are brand new need to be bedded in properly - they need to be worked hard - engines aren't "run in" so to speak anymore.

So I took the car for a 20 minute spirited run - let her warm up then went tiptronic working the engine to the redline.

God it's quick!

Glad its 'fine' but are you expecting to use a lot more oil per the technician or should it start to drop away ? I still think in your case it seems excessive. Hope all goes well though, keep us posted.

I have no idea.

I'm certainly not happy about it - oil isn't cheap.

Garage is having it in on Friday so next step is to see what they say

Agreed. Keep us posted

All the best

Service + Maint package :D covers all oil/fluid top ups between servicing ;)! If mine starts to drink oil, i'll just be bugging them for it 24/7 till its sorted.

By this do you mean if you get a pcp mith free servicing it should include top ups between services if it's required?

Nope I pay monthly for servicing/maintenance package that covers first 3 services and all maintenance (anything wear and tear like brake pads, discs i think? wiper blades, air con regassing, top ups of fluids between servicing etc etc)

IS that through a dealer package or separate insurance policy?
