My vRS has a drink problem

Featured Replies

I've used 2.5l in 2500 miles. Always warm up before i rag it and cool down oil after. Mostly short journeys and good drive once a weekish. Never run it in as such. The guys with cupras had high oil consumption when they run them in

i never ran mine in and i am up to 2200 miles of shortish journeys with the odd longer journey and i have only had to put in about 500ml of oil. At the moment the level is sitting aout 3/4 up the dip stick.

But does it ease off? Did read it takes up to 10k

I've had my 10k service, and now 12500 and not topped up in that time

There seems to be a lot of variations of guzzling oil !! Mine has used 2.5l in 4700miles which is not too bad but could be considered bad or good compared to other people !! I drove the car fairly hard at times in the 1st 1000miles..never thrashed from cold though and since then it has been driven fast or slow dependant on road condition and how my mood takes me :p

Do you have many spirited drives atall chas?

I noticed the same behaviour in the beginning with my car actually.

It was drinking loads off oil in the beginning, filled up with 1 liter oil after about 3700 km and once again at 6500 km.

After that tho, everything has been quiet, the stick still got oil on it.

In my case, that was about a new engine... but I still think it's ridiculos that they have to drink that much oil!

Gonna have a go at checking how much oil it is drinking after a new refill, noticed that when I drove it hard it was drinking more then when I drove like a granny...

I hope you find the cause Gorebrush, cause that sure as hell don't sound healthy!

yep, i use the kick down a few times as well.

Car now has 5500 miles on the clock, I'm tempted to wait and see what the usage is like after 10K to be honest.

I think I need to tone my driving style slightly for this new car.

I wouldn't advise that.

I'm extremely surprised you haven't already logged this issue and discussed it with the dealer. They can't do anything if they don't know about it.

As you've said already, another 5k will cost you a fair bit in extra oil! And running it for another 5k when the engine potentially has an issue isn't the wisest move.

Yeah, true.

That's good to know. I doubt it but has it got anything to do with the oil they put in it from new? It's not a different make/grade? I presume the sump is dry when they deliver it and the dealership fills everything up as part of the PDI

Wouldn't have thought so, as it's driven about at different points before it even reaches the dealership. On the docks for example.

The oil level is checked as part of PDI.

Its possible they use a sort of running in oil from new? (and yes, as steve says its driven off the production line!) maybe a techie could answer.

Ross would give you a definite answer, but I had understood that they leave the factory will the correct oil level.

I've read some older threads on this, and Tech1e says that using 1 litre per 600 miles is still "within tolerance" and that is what my car is doing.

I can only think it was to do with the first 3K miles of running-in the car had.... I KNEW I should have bought a new one............

Yes, it's 1L per 1000Km. So 620 miles emoticon-0148-yes.gif

I'd still be reporting it and checking with your dealer.

Yes, I'll be in touch with them when I can :)

The RX8 was an oil drinker and they recommended checking it once every two fill ups - maybe a routine like this should be followed. I have used 300/400 ml (last checked and topped up at 1,600 miles) and just gone up to 2,100 miles from new although its due an oil check this weekend prior to going on holiday. Ill update this if i have to top it up.

Been away for 10 days and totally forgot to update this.

Checked the oil before I left and as of 2100 miles its used 300/400 ml which was after a week in the lake district covering 700 odd miles.

I know this post has moved on slightly but thought i would post.

Thanks.

Does the grade of oil make a difference?? :wonder: I'm using 5W 30 in SWMBO's vRS as it is having an unhealthy addiction to oil! It was coming home last week and the warning light came on!!

I let it stand level over night and did a dip stick check... It was nearly empty!! I put 2.5 ltrs in and let it stand over night before doing another check. Another 1/2 ltrs put in and it seemed OK.

Regular level checks required methinks :( Shame, such a little thing could spoil a great car..... :o

Just check it conforms to the correct VAG standard for the 1.4TSI.

I would now put grade at secondary importance, after checking that whatever you're using complies with the correct standard for that engine.

nearly 13,000 now, and just checked it, no top up needed since it was serviced 3000 miles ago... and I've been proper wringing its neck today!

According to my local Skoda service center, it is the correct oil for the engine and it works for my Octi vRS tdi...... :wonder:

My mechanic begs to differ that all these years on all Skodas the correct oil to use including TSI engines is 5W 40 This is coming from someone who has been working on Skodas all his life plus has ran numerous rallies (including Rally Acropolis) again with Skodas.

Of course my country has different environmental conditions and unfortunately I don't know more technical details regarding the matter only that he is very adamant that 5W 30 IS NOT the right kind of oil for these cars regardless what the VW group promotes and suggests.

When I meet up I will ask him to give me further details on the matter.

Please keep us updated on this!! I have concidered changing to 5w 40 and would be interested to find out what your mate says. This might be worth a seperate thread in General Car Chat..... if the Mods allow it ;)

My VRS came with a complimentary Litre of 5W 40 which as this thread indicates I went through pretty quick. Half way through the second 1 Litre bottle of the same stuff now and I have done 9000 miles
