vRSy's Mk2 Fabia vRS project and build

Featured Replies

Not sure tbh. Question is, is it a result of the development or just a **** engine design? Anyone know what the cost of stock pistons/rings will be?

Well, if the pistons were bog standard then you have a potential case of the design etc which still could be argued that if it wasn't for massive additional power the disign was fine and you should have had the rigs upgraded as a part of the development process to cope.

With aftermarket forged pistons there is no discussion about you paying for it. Nothing to do with engine design as parts are aftermarket :)

At least this is how I would like at this.

As for Octy... If I had the money I'd stay with Fabia still ...

Ive had both. Both were stage 3. The octavia is better at everything other than fuel economy.

Hmmm I know one person that will be happy! He mention if they blew the engine and fitted forged parts they can really see what this can do!

But as you've rightly pointed out where they designed on the older piston, I'd say probably.

Either way mate they will sort it an it will be better than ever if you ask me. Just a really bad time to happen if this would I happened back in July it would have been dealt with and now your back you'd be picking up a monster of a conversion!

Oem pistons £560 incl VAT but on back order approx 2 weeks i think. Wossner forged pistons £750 but available for immediate delivery

No brainer:D. So Monday car is back on the road ? ;)

need to see if the cylinders have been scored. If so potentially it will need to be bored out or have the block replaced :(

That surprises me.

Open road, yes.

But big heavier car that's FWD in the twisties, like a typical UK back road blast?

The car I sold compared to what I have now. Yep, it was a better car in all areas. I think the Mk5 platform is generally just a better platform. The Octavia had more chassis work done to it than my Fabia and a ran more aggressive geo as well, however now that the Fabia has the front and rear ARBs, id imagine the tide has turned on the handling front.

I generally prefer smaller, lighter cars. I just do not like that inertia of a sofa on wheels...

Todays news is................

Good news. The Cylinders are undamaged so im going to order the Wossner pistons as soon as i finish work today. They should arrive at APR some time tomorrow. Hoping to have the car back towards the end of next week. That gives them time to fit and reassemble the engine, do the breaking in process and put a few hundred miles on her, then drop the oil again, do a little bit of re-calibration on the map ready for the finished product.

Im in a happier place right now despite the outlay for these pistons. Plus i forgot I haven't paid for the anti roll bars yet either, so i need to pay Alex for them as well today.

X-mas came early to APR them ;)

No piston debris damage anywhere else I presume? Good to hear bores were not damaged! Just needgood honing now and new pistons and rings.

Did you, they se any evidence of bores glazing? Any evidence of oil consumption or bad combustion patterns (on pistons) caused by bad injectors spray pattern or intake deficiencies?

Sorry for being a tad over-eager here  - not everyday you get to strip the motor, especially highly tuned one!

Christmas came early to APR? I don't get what you mean. The pistons are from another company nothing to do with APR (TSR Performance) and im buying direct from them, so APR wont have any involvment until they arrive in the post, plus APR are supplying the labour and diagnosis FOC so they arent benefiting there either??

No other issues at all to mention.

I thought you mentioned earlier you had to pay for all that work? If not then all the better :)

Uprated pistons were only about £200 more expensive and on the shelf ready to go, so it made sense to buy these instead of OEM ones which are still not proven to be a fix yet. Im supplying the parts, APR the labour. We both agreed it wasnt really anyones fault. so we went 50:50. Although i suspect the labour would have been substantially higher than the pistons

They sound better and better those APR guys :)

I think the "Christmas came early to APR" refers to the fact that they appear not to have f*cked the engine, if I read it correctly

Actually I thought Sy will be paying them for ARB, engine works etc. But still in your ^^ interpretation it sounds as well :)

So what caused the failure ?

  • Author

piston ring had failed in cylinder 1. Ill post a pictue of the fault when i collect the car.

If it broke a ring and didnt damage the bore you should rush straight out and buy a lottery ticket !!

Bore is fine, it was sucked in straight into exhaust port and "recycled" by the turbo

So ring land cracked rather than ring broke?
