The Twins. (And Yeti RS)

Featured Replies

There is a similar 2010 TT-RS on Copart with minimal damage if you are interested. ;)

That'll go for about £25k won't it?

I think the Mrs may notice that, she's pretty much oblivious to everything up to now!!

I suspect around 18-20k plus 2k fees and delivery.

But you don't get to test it first either.

It's a lot of money for an un proven car. You might as well do what you did and for the same price get a fully working one

That's a big gamble against something when you don't need a fair chunk of it!!

Keep in mind with copart, vehicles that look to have just panel damage may be far worse.

My M3 was a cat D with what looked like from the pictures just panel damage - a nice little project. However the chap who bought it contacted me for the service book and spare key and had no clue the rear diff casing was cracked and the gearbox was knackered. He's ended up with an extra ~10-15k bill!

I know it's not yeti related it is to anyone thinking of doing similar with a salvage car!

Richard for all that it was a horrific crime to murder that poor ttrs I will enjoy seeing this develop.

Exactly Josh.

Hence I ended up biting the bullet, paying a little more and getting a fully working car from a dealer with warranty.

Seems mad.  Maybe not so mad as it looks.

The unusual cars in copart always seem to go for too much, while the average and regular cars sell quite cheaply.

I found a Red Audi RS3 on ebay and was tempted.

Was cheap, phoned up and asked about the reg for a HPI check to be told it was Cat D.

Seller claimed it was OK, "Cat D is is just light damage mate".

The only Red RS3 I've seen as salvage was Cat D six months ago, the whole driver side wheel, suspension, strut etc.. had been ripped clean off.

People need to realise that Cat D isn't light damage, it's damage between 40% (hence written off) and up to the full market value of the vehicle.

Cat C is a repair cost over the market value of the vehicle.

Hence you can have a seriously damaged expensive car only be a Cat D, and a old car (like my Fabia) Cat C with a dented boot and cracked bumper.

On a TT-RS you can have a £20k repair bill... and it's still a Cat D which people see as "light damage".

Personally I'd be more worried about cars involved in accidents but are "unrecorded" and are sold n repaired despite the serious damage.

I've seen a few on copart which I would expect to be cat C but we're going as U

Work continues...

Excess weight being removed, over 25kg on top of what I've already removed and it's still coming out. :)

Obviously some trim to go back in afterwards.

How much weight did you loose when you pulled the rear seats out Richard?

About 60kg if I remember correctly.  I think I put it on this thread earlier, but it's probably some way back now...

As they are self supporting folding items with internal steel frames they are rather heavy.

You will notice the difference.

i saw the Volkwagen Tiguan on my fb news feed pushing 500bhp surely this will be near that once your finished? looking forward to seeing it in action

The Greenlnes kerb weight is 1259kg so should take it down to 1200, been thinking about 'lighter is faster' and seeing if money put there would make more sence. There's a few pits becoming available like these wishbones, thanks to you me thinks :)

I have those wishbones on mine. :)

Apparently some of the higher quality VAG ones are a similar weight, just not shiney.  But Skoda don't get them.

The most important place to remove weight from is the front.

Which as you'd guess, is also the most expensive place to lose it. :D

I'd ignore the quoted kerb weight and get it weighed.

By Yeti was around 50kg over, with a full tank.  And that doesn't include the driver...

I guess you can't do as much engine simplification mods with the new engine. Will you retain the aircon?

That's probably the cheapest weight saving from the front

No.

No aircon.

No great big heater unit (motorsport smaller ones for screen demisting)

No soundproofing.

Nothing that isn't needed unless it'll make it look odd.

We are going to get this as light as we can.  It might be lighter than your Fabia, but 4wd. :)

I only drive it to and from track days anyway...

Do you remember which bushes you went for when you fit the wishbones ?

Only that they were SuperPro, same as the Wishbones.

Plus adjustable balljoints so you can get a bit of camber for better cornering.

Makes sense with the ball joints, I'm looking at the Anti Lift Kit aswell, the handeling doesn't seem as tight since the 17" wheels went on? May switch the front ARB to the stiffest setting.

That sounds seriously good. It's already quick.

I'm really excited to see how this turns out. It's going to be flipping quick.

I guess no need for wheel arch liners etc.

Removing any of the dash/ airbags?

Wheels should only have improved the cornering due to less sidewall. (And reduced a little ride comfort).

Odd.

Not so sure on the arch liners, but am only planning to leave the top part of the dash from above the radio to the screen.

So it'll still look like a Yeti.

Good plan. Could you make the too part of the dash out of fibreglass and get it flocked?

May save additional weight
