Signed up and processing on the works pc. I may find a nice quiet server and bung it on to see what happens.

Well downloaded the console version and all seems well for now.

Added my 1.6 Centrino laptop to the effort, for what it's worth.

Probably more than my Pentium III 1GHz currently running SQL Server and 2 major application sets for demos :D

Mine's still processing its first one :( Damn it's a biggy, so, hopefully, I'll get loads of points :D

the centrinos are actually really good at this kind of thing.. and punch well above their weight... a 1.6 will show a 2.6gig p4 a clean set of heels in most pure processing applications

If I have it running on my home PC, can I run another one (with the same user ID) on my laptop at the same time?

Yes :)

Yes, when you run the config part it asks you for a device id from 1-5.

Hmmmm

I've finished a unit, but it's not showing in our team results. Maybe there's a delay.

On the other hand, the Briskoda team are at 8112 of 36234 teams, so keep crunching, folks.

Phil

It shows up now, Phil.

(Damn all you lot with your three-day head start :D. You won't see any of my work untill well into tomorrow :()

So it does. And we're climbing the rankings, too. Now into the 7000's!

Centrino = P3 - which at clock-for-clock does more work, generally.

FAH uses mainly floating point, so in that sense it's pretty relevant ;)

Just signed up and started - god know's how long it'll take - can't leave my PC on all night - far too bloody noisey !

Colin, You are getting quiet a few work units done. Whats the config of the box your running on. I started it running on my work desktop (P4 3.06) and it hadnt completed one allday. I also now have it running on a Dual Xeon CPU server at work, this will run 24x7 till I stop it, and still havent managed 1 wu.

That I don't know...I can try and explain the principle behind it though.

All over the world' date=' there is computer processing power which is being unused.

Similarly, there are lots of projects which require serious "number crunching", and these would normally be performed at great expense on a supercomputer (or similar).

So instead, these projects write small client programs which sit on people's computers...these small programs utilise unused processing power, and report the results back to the main computer...this is known as distributed computing...

Hope this helps things make more sense! :)

Thanks Rob , it's all as clear as mud now .......... :D

I haven't got a clue waht this thread is all about, or what 'Distributed Computing' means. Nevertheless, I've signed up (I think) and if it's for a good cause, then come on! Do I have to leave my computer on?

You don't have to no...it will process when you using it*...or when it's turned on.

As per now, your using your pc, but it's not actually doing anything, thus it has spare time, which this distributed comouting project takes advantage of.

Some of the top teams have donated over 4 years processing in a matter of months, figures equate to 30,000 USD in service bills for electricty and alike...a big saving for these projects, for what is otherwise wasted energy of our pc's.

They'll each be working in parallel on a WU each. It sounds like you've just been allocated one of the meatier working units and will be credited accordingly when they finally complete. As an aside, I'm not sure whether the clients are multi-threaded, so you might want to have a look at the CPU util on your server. If it's only using one proc, follow the instructions to install a new instance and set it's proc affinity to one or t'other.

Is there much point in adding my athlon 750 to the cause? :o Or is it a case of every little bit helps? ;)

I'm in and crunching, my AMD 64 3400+ is on 24/7 so that should help us a little :)

Every bit helps. It's the tortoise that wins the race.

It is worth it as long as it is over 500 MHz, I'd say. If you go for 'Timeless Tinker' WUs a slower one is ok too - or perhaps grab another project which can benefit from your time.

Worth pointing out however that if you don't leave your PC running much, you may not get a very good point output and you may occationally not get full credit (mainly as turnaround is important).

If you have a P4, check if you have HT enabled (HyperThreading). If you do, you will want to use TWO clients, each with their OWN machineID, and running that as a service is highly recommended.

:)

Well - I got the software crunching slowly away... Whats with the odd looking chemical symbol style arty stuff going on?

Well, whatever it is, its doing it... Although I got an "illegal action" error message come up quite early when I clicked it. Must have hit the wrong thing. :o

edit: I meant to ask... Is this using up much of my internet bandwidth... Its just I don't want to leave this going and then find its used up all of my download cap, and I'm left using dial-up. :D

Hi - the GUI client is not as stable as the service one - we (mod team/admin team on the folding community site) keep hammering on about it, but it is due to using OpenGL rather than DirectX or similar.

The chemical symbol stuff is the proteins being folded/unfolded. It is basically showing you what it's calculating.

As for bandwidth - it's not a lot, couple of meg a day at the most I'd say but I've never had a problem with bandwidth caps for it as yet ;)

What kinda cap do you have? 1GB/month? you'll be fine, especially for a single machine :D

I'm on 6gb, but I just wanted to check it wasn't using like 10k a second or something as that wouldn't take long to wipe it out. 2MB a day is no problem (i probably use more than that in 10 minutes of Briskoda browsing :D)

Edit: I'm up to 1 of 400 now. :( In FIFTEEN minutes. This is gonna take a while.
