Right I've restarted my PC and I think that folding is now working (it shows up in services) but how can I tell what its doing, can I tell ? that was the one good part of the GUI version -at least you could see what you were doing !

Download Electron Microscope (EM) which will let you "watch" your service. Alternatively every now and then open unitinfo.txt which will give you a progress report in % complete.

EM is another highly intuitive piece of software, like the FAH GUI ;)

EM3 is a 3rd party tool. In the forum section where that's stored, you'll also find a bunch of alternatives to it :)

Will try to check out the FC forum tonight. Had to catch up with 2 days of no internet access (due to being on-site), did a couple of sites but didn't quite manage to get round to checking out the team forum :(

This is quite scary, been running for 36 hours now and only 28 steps through it, its a long way to go, will this damage my pc running on 100% useage for so long? according to my calculations should be done some time wednesday for the first one. I need a quicker PC!

Well, this is my current situation after a week of on & off usage of the folding software... 40%, getting there.... SLOWLY. :grumpy:

Mine has been on 100% useage for a year with no damage, it is on 24/7 so dont worry :)

There is no damage done to your PC assuming that:

You check the temperatures are ok (keep your machine clean, dust build-up is bad for any PC but when it's at 100% load it can make it a little too warm for comfort).

I've been running FAH on 30+ machines for years now (didnt start with 30, mind) and the client has been improved over the time the FC site was started. We help with beta testing so when you see a released client it is at least pretty decent.

The GUI-related problems are a total nightmare for us on site, as it keeps coming back.

That said, the service client is 'battery aware' in that it can be told to not run when not on AC power, that kinda thing. Further enhancements will come over time, they work pretty slowly as the science is Pandegroup's main thing, we push them towards making it more 'user' friendly (I quote that word as it's a sensative word to use for some).

Fold on Briskoda.net :D

Been folding now for a few days, and nearly upto 20 units. One of the xeon boxes at work has been folding away like mad now since the small hours of thursday on the same project and as of 20 mins ago was 93% complete. This project had better be worth something, its one of the 2,500,000 frame ones.

It should be ;)

You can tell by the time it takes this project wouldn't be possible without large numbers of powerful CPUs folding away - thanks again :)

I've completed 1 WU, then I've done another 2500 one, but the program seems to have encountered a problem.

Every time I click on the red wheel thing, the normal screen comes up showing the last WU I completed, but it says 'waiting for Core' and 'Couldn't get work instructions'

It's been like that for a couple of days now. Anyone know what to do?

It may have to do with some servers being down due to UPS upgrades. We're talking a BIG one (UPS) here, room-filling kind.

I'd check out the folding community portal, it may give you info on when things are expected to be back to normal again :)

Looks like it was indeed worth "something" :). I confidently predict that you'll knock me off the bronze medal position of the F@H rostrum ... it was nice while it lasted. :D

Just a shame that (for reasons anyone who knows where I work will understand) I can't really bring myself to run the software on any of the machines I have at work. A real shame, seeing as I have about 40GHz sitting in the room next door :(

Simon - I would ask permission to run it on work machines anyway, to avoid difficulty. I would not install it on a mission critical server. Not because it is not stable (service version ;)) but because on those things you'd only want business services installed to reduce the risk of downtime.

In my previous company I had it installed on every machine I was able to install it on, but in my current position I can't do the same (shame really).

At the end of the day it's another application which may require some attention every once in a while. Your judment will probably be the best for your situation  and I certainly wouldn't risk my job over it ;)

As for installing it - it's important to make sure you have permission to run it, and I would never, ever install it on ANY equipment involved in medical or military usage. It's just common sense I suppose :D

43% and counting. I WILL get this WU finished. :D

Quite ;), and I have indeed judged as above. Still a shame though :D

hehehe  - 40 GHz sure would be awesome :)

I'm about to order the bits to build an AMD64 based PC.

I would dearly love to put folding@home on servers at work, don't think the management would be too pleased :( Shame as the servers are just sat ticking over out of school hours and during school holidays :(

I know of some people who deduct tax for hardware purchased - this is in the US mind - as it's a good cause, and hardware purchased/donated to a good cause may be tax-deductable. I don't know if you can do the same in the UK, perhaps worth asking the tax office.

As for 'doing it' in schools, some schools like the idea, others don't. It may be worth asking about using idle CPU time, and perhaps get the sysadmin 'hooked' on it. That way, (s)he may actually suggest this and the political side of things gets a lot easier :)

What kinda bits are you getting for your A64? I've kinda run out of cash due to the imminent arrival of the new car, annoyingly :(

Getting my "Network Manager" hooked on anything is very difficult, trying to convince him that my 13 years or so of frontline IT experiance could be valuable to him have so far fallen on deaf ears :(

3500 processor, Couple of matched sticks of memory, probably 1Gb as money is a bit tight atm, MSI motherboard, WesternDigital Raptor HDU(S), and still stuck on which video card, although as I am not into gaming I may just go with a tried and tested Matrox which have always given good service in the past.

I am slowly catching up, now in 3rd position and not far from passing ColinD. Of course chances are that you'll complete a big wu and sprint ahead.

Seem to have patent on 6th at the moment... Will soon have to lose another CPU as well (thankfully it is the worst one ;)).

The scoreboard, as it stands...

I *might* get into 24th spot soon... my first WU is almost 50% there now.

:thumbup: No way - nice try though - it would be awesome if you could buy an Athlon FX-55 and 'gift-aid' it up to include a nice Radeon X800XT :D

I've just joined.

It's currently running on my "spare" desktop, which is only a 167MHz Pentium - so I don't expect to figure very high in the league tables

:woohoo: My second WU wasn't lost after all! :D
