I've uninstalled the program after completing 3 WU. Something goes wrong (very technical, that) after each WU is completed and Windows asks if I want to send an error message. Left it running all day today and couldn't get the PC to respond at all when I wanted to use it again, so had to revert to switching off the power supply. Another WU had been completed in my absence.

Yep - I had similar problems with the Windows client. It really is a rather clunky poorly written piece of software. The console one seems much more stable, but requires some more technical setting up.

I did notice that whilst paused I couldn't get on to any games on my PC. :( I had to quit it to get them to work. Most odd.

Yeah, it's supposed to only take CPU at idle priority, i.e. when nothing else requires it, but it seems to have a problem giving up the CPU once it has a hold on it. :(

The GUI client causes annoying graphics-card related rubbish to go wrong, which is why I've always recommended the service installer. It's more work as a one-off, but it makes life easier :D

So exactly which of the available options should I install for a home PC with XP? I can't say i understood them all.

I would get the 'no-nonsense' client, and install it as a service.

Supposing you wish to do this, Denis.

1. Download the exe (which is just the bare .exe, no installer)

2. Either make a directory c:\program files\folding@home and copy the exe in there, or copy it there after the next step.

3. Run the exe (yes it's really called fah502-console.exe) with a -config switch. Answer the questions as you wish to set it up. If you choose to install the service -

4. Edit the registry and put quotes round the path to the service exe in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\folding@home bla bla bla\imagepath cos otherwise when the service control manager tries to start it, it will fail due to the spaces in the pathname. It assumes that's the path where it's going to be run from, but doesn't make the directory or copy itself there, hence step 2.

(I may have got the directory name wrong in step 2 - this is installed on my work PC and I have no intention of installing it here, but no doubt you'll work it out  )

No nonsense eh!

Very true ;) - We keep bashing on at them for not making things easier, you should have seen it before the support forum was started :(

Well, after leaving my PC on from 8.30 to now which is uhmmm, damn close to 2AM!!!! :grumpy: my WU is only 1/16 the way to completion... Every little bit helps, yuh, but Jesus H... I'm gonna need to keep my PC on for flippin' ages.

*yawn... OFF to bed! :)

I did kinda warn ya ;) - it checkpoints so it can restart from the checkpoint

Jason, stop looking at it. It's like a watched pot. Just use the PC normally, and all those little periods when you're not using it will add up and build up to full WUs.

Can anyone tell me why mr Densem goes right to the top after 2 WU? and ive done shedloads?

Becasue he's working on "bigger things" with a faster processor :D

Have a look at this page

http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html

and see what project you're running. Chances are you're running WU with fairly low credit. One of my computers is running a WU worth 600 points, but that's going to take another three or four days to complete

I rekon this thing prefers intel cpus rather than AMD stuff

I was down the pub nick. ;) :dtp: I just came back at 2am thinking it might have gone a bit further than 6%...

And I'm using an Athlon, so maybe this AMD thing is affecting me too. :(

Jason... ive got a hi spec athlon running at 2.2gig (equiv to a 3.5gig+ p4) and it usually takes a day and a half for a 170point WU to complete.

am currently running a 44pointer which is 10hours according to EMIII

but im also running 3x p4 2.6 and 2x xeon 2.8 :D

which is why im miffed that im still loosing

seems to not be too stable.. have lost 3-4 wu's @ 90+ % due to it locking.

Remember it may be your PC that's not stable, FAH runs at 100% CPU load so if your cooling isn't good it will find that out ;)

no it runs @ 50% if you have a hyper threading p4.....

and my pc is stable.

Paul, which client are you using?

I've had no trouble so far, one (full graphical) under Windows and one (the only one!) under Linux. Having said that, my machines are at the low end of the performance spectrum, so not over-stressed.

There is some lag between asking for a pause and the CPU use dropping, but I guess that's down to the loose IPC between the client and the core.

i have gone back to gui... the console appeared to cause problems...

I'm running GUI on my work PC, and console at home. Gonna switch to console at work too, and it is very tempting to create some sort of automatic installer CD ROM, so I can install it on everyones PC whilst they're out for lunch ;)

Finnished me first WU today. WooHoo! Got 66 points for a 250 unit thingy.

It's now trying to get through a 2500 unit thingy. I'm on number 475 at the minute......

It's estimating 42 days till it's finnished!!!!!! I'll tell you on Monday 28th March if it's done.

Anyone done one this size?
