Probably  - I run 30 machines at home (yep my electricity bill is HIGH). I run whatever they chuck at them, pretty much.

I would get the 'no-nonsense' client, and install it as a service.

Definitely, definitely do this

I had a few problems with the graphical version, it caused other apps to constantly minimise and crashed my graphics more than once.

So I switched to the console version, and can even play games quite happily with no perceptible loss in performance.

Just curious though, how can I ever un-install the console version? Would I just delete the executable and associated work files

If you want to uninstall it, basically stop the service first, then you can just remove the file(s) and it's done.

Always make sure you remove the service first as otherwise windows will possibly get upset (i.e. it will complain, it won't fail to start up).

Same for upgrades of the client exe - you can stop the service, copy the newer version of the same type of client over the top, and then start the service again.

Please note this is only true for the console version, you can just use the normal installer with the GUI client which is supposed to do this properly for ya.

Can i just say a big thanks and  to everyone who has joined up :)

We are climbing the rankings quite quickly and are up to position 4416 out of 35k :)

I'm about 30% through a 400 point WU right now... plodding on. :D:rolleyes: :snail:

77% after about a week - no idea how many points the WU is worth - how did you find out, Jason?

Have a look for the details in FAHLog.txt and compare it to the link I posted a few pages ago.

Edit: Link here

http://vspx27.stanford.edu/psummary.html

Edit2: more details...

You'll find a line in the FAHLog.txt starting "Protein: " and then the name of the protein, which should correspond with a "work unit name" in the link above.

I suspect you'll be working on one of the 600 unit ones.

OK I found it, thanks - 241 points - not a huge amount :D

Just checked and the name is also in unitinfo.txt - much easier to find than in FAHlog.txt

No idea Nick - I just mean its a 400 point unit, i.e I'm at around 27% having done about 110 of those 400 point to make up one WU. Looking forward to seeing how far through the 400 workload I am when I get home (left PC on all day to crunch a little more)

Aah, no, I'm pretty sure that doesn't follow. See my answers (and Nick's shortcut to the name) above^^^^

http://forum.folding-community.org has the links you'd want at the top of the forum/portal. You will also find some useful links to stats pages, both by Pandegroup and by others.

Also, when you reg there please introduce the team in the team forum and plonk a link back to here, then I can try and spot it and welcome ya there :D

Will get Neo_VR to do that in the first instance...since he's in the lead and actually set it all in motion.

Cool - will see ya there ;)

Woo Hoo 1 WU :D

Well, I got home today and my PC had crashed only a short way into its progress of its first WU... I was greeted by fatal exception errors galore, and had to kill the power and reboot... :( I'm only gonna work on this now when I'm using the PC from now on, and not leave it on while I'm at work.

Well i have just completed a 250000 file, 100 steps, and it has sent to the server but i cant see any extra points, i am using the console as the GUI one kept crashing, i'm a bit peeved as i expected some good points :( maybe it takes a while to show up..

I can honestly say I have no idea what this thread is about.

Well i got my 600 points now, and Ross, it is a really great thing to get involved in, if you look at the website it explains most of it, BTW there is a motor just like yours just up the road from me, i never realised they were as cool as they obviosly are ;):D

I've currently got 666 points! Someone trying to tell me something?

Phil

AHH! - got my PC running again after upgrade > AMD 64 3000 bloody thing has kept crashing on me - the culprit - the GUI version - now un-installed.

Will get console version and run that instead

hope it works out ok :)

When I am back off my current mad schedule at work I will try to find out what the plans are for the next version of the software. The GUI client uses OpenGL which on windows is particularly badly supported by most gfx card manufacturers :(

OK I've downloaded the console version......and that doesnt work ? - my PC isnt hanging anymore which is good, but I'd kinda like to keep going on the folding the log reveals this :

Don't know if anyone knows what any of this means ?

Right I've restarted my PC and I think that folding is now working (it shows up in services) but how can I tell what its doing, can I tell ? that was the one good part of the GUI version -at least you could see what you were doing !

Not sure on techie help, but my old Athlon is now at 36% of its first WU (a 400 size one) I think I may hang up my folding team gloves at the end of it... :)
