Dash Cams

Probably either smartcam direct who are one of the site sponsors or via the official importers, though looks like the 380 is now obsolete?

  • It's funny. Before I found this site, I would never have dreamt of doing mods or even considered buying a dash cam! A bad influence you lot are!!

  • This picture should sum up what I got around to today and what element to this task went wrong after I returned from an extended test drive for a comparison video v the Blackvue.........     chrisw

  • Because you'll have a dead phone after a while from it constantly writing to the flash memory, unless you use a replaceable card.   Because you can leave the camera in the car when parked up to catc

What's the best place to get genuine Blackvue camera for a good price? I'm thinking of getting a DR380....

Ebay used I would go for, less likely to get a fake and would be cheaper. If you scroll through this thread though you will see far superior cameras of all shapes and sizes for a fraction of the price. I had a BlackVue DR500GW and it was shocking quality with any trees near road due to a very low bitrate for video which was crazy.

Unedited just taken straight from camera to Youtube.......... When in town and no trees about it was 1000 times better.

My Mobius arrived today.

Shame it won't work powered by the built in USB in the Elegance. I assume that the car wants to see teh SD card and the Mobius won't charge when playing back.

Had the glove box out and wiring in looks straightforward once my piggy back arrives. I ordered a 1.8 m USB lead as the one that comes with it is short. Running the cable through the headlining was easy.

If you download the configuration app on PC, make sure that the Power On - Auto Record is set to 'External Only' or 'Both'.

Without having to read 16 pages guys, can somebody recommend me a decent unit, I don't mind spending a little to get a decent one either.

I don't have much acces to a pc, I use a tablet 99.9% of the time, will this be a problem for me? Many thanks in advance. Jon

^^^ Same for me, though I do use a pc a lot.

I think it depends on how much money you have. I speed read and picked up that the mobius is good if you have about £50, a secondhand blackvue is good if you have £100-150, and you can then spend even more on a new blackvue if you want. I think if you want waterproofness and stuff there are other options - believe go pro is an outdoor option - is this all true and fair? I'm buying mobius when I have £50 to splurge.

Mobius has a shed load more options now than when they first came out, ind waterproof clear casing like gopro has, wide angle lens option etc etc.

I have a blackvue 500 and a 380. I got the 380 from smartcam, one of the forum sponsors and the 500hd from the official importers below as I also got the smart power free. The Blackvue's fastest speed is 30 frames a second, the mobius is more IIRC but for capturing video evidence if you have an accident its fine. The 500 will also connect via wifi while in your car to a decent smartphone or tablet and theres also a free app for the blackvue available via the usual google store if you want that option. Both use micro sd cards which is included with the blackvue as is a usb converter.

both come with a mount that sticks to the windscreen and sits between the screen and rear view mirror very neatly. I've had mine for over 6 months now and SWMBO hasn't noticed it yet. They are easy to fit- fubar did a how to thread in the octy 2 section and it takes less than 30 minutes with all but a short lead from the headliner down to the unit hidden.. All you need is a piggyback fuse and a lighter socket or the smart power unit. They take seconds to remove too and theres no sucker to leave a circle on your screen as the mount sticks permanently to the screen via double sided tape which is a bugger to get off!

I forget mines there now...fit and forget.

My BlackVue DR500GW disappointment has been covered a couple of times in the forum and I cannot recommend them personally :( The Mobius is also 30fps at 1080p, the Blackvue has a wider angle field of vision but rather fish eyed for my liking (mobius has a wider angled lens option which I do like better personally). The big difference is that the bitrate of the videos recorded in the BlackVue DR500GW is very low in order to extend amount of footage you can fit on the memory card, for close proximity multiple objects it falls apart. BlackVue's official answer to all customers who have complained is that it is perfectly normal to get footage like this from what is meant to be one of the leading dash cams and one of most expensive possible. I tried 2 DR500GW's both the same and as they were just out hoping a FW update might fix, BlackVue's response to all the complaints was no, it's normal.......

Open spaces it was fairly good (not worth the price good, but good) This clip is down a road with trees either side, it was uploaded raw as it came from the camera hence a full unedited clip to show how it reacts in openings etc. Light adjusting on them drove me mad too!

Mobius the other day going through even denser trees (this is a demanding time for any camera, to process all the motion in it's entire field of view) I am much happier with the £41 camera's results, my GoPro doesn't even do as good :( The adjustment for changing light on the Mobius is just like 90% of cameras, spot on, not like the BlackVue light on light off flickering back and forth.

Seriously unimpressed and absolutely gutted by BlackVue :( The wifi feature was and is innovative for what is solely a dash cam. I do not know what it is like now, but the initial app was very rough around the edges and didn't have a finalised feel to it on launch. Being able to adjust most settings from your phone was the only feature I found interesting, but once I set my cameras up personally, that's them set forever. So more gadget novelty for me. To use for playback, I could take memory card out quicker and put it in my phone and get better quality playback without having to be really close to camera for signal. To use phone to position camera, handy but tbh it's wide angle so it just has to point roughly forward. It is more so handy on a blackvue than most other cameras due to the design of the mount once affixed you only have lateral adjustment unlike a ball mount most others boast and or suction to reposition or move to another car.

Sorry for rant, I am just that annoyed with BlackVue, or CrapVue as I have called them for over a year now over that let down. I expected that to be the best camera on the market and one I could fit and have no worries over for years....   For the price of them, I am disgusted!

ps Mobius supports SDXC so you can use 64gb 128gb cards etc, 64gb SanDisk C10 U1 cards ate only £25.99 now mega cheap!

Well we should have them really confused now! LOL

I've no experience of the mobius personally but certainly from what I've seen from the clips you've posted the mobius gives a better picture and I didn't notice a big difference between the 380 and 500 picture quality wise even though the 500 is full hd. Some of that could be down to the vRS's ride though I guess. The 500 is slightly bigger than the 380 too. I've not seen how the mobius mounts in the car, but if its as neat as the blackvue then the mobius would be worth serious consideration, especially as its cheaper providing its reliable?

Heads or tails? :-)

1 thing I'd add is its better to have any of them than have no dashcam at all, but maybe I'm paranoid!

Cheers

Ade

The Blackvue is better shaped than the Mobius, as it fits along the window, rather than out into the cabin. I recently did a wired install of a Mobius for someone and its just not as neat as the BV. However, its still not that bad and I'd get one over a BV now.

I think this all summarised is 'buy the mobius'.

If you don't like it you can probably re eBay it for the same money (as an item being dispatched from the uk rather than Asia) people like me don't like to wait for shipping!

...or a Mk1 Fabia...

I have the Möbius for front facing. I was looking at getting another for rear facing but the only drawback is none of the mounts supplied will allow fitting to the rear glass on a Yeti. In the Octy I think it might just get enough angle with some filing of the ball socket.

Here is mine on Octavia on normal self adhesive mounts front and back. No modification needed. For rear window of Yeti if it's too sheer a screen you could get an 'L' shaped piece of plastic and stick the smaller end to top of window, creating a level surface for a ball mount. any threaded mount should work as its a standard tripod sized screw thing on it.

but Octy is spot on self adhesive or suction ball mount.

That's what I thought Fubar, thanx.

I'm pretty handy with adjusting things to work as I need.

Sorry if this has been mentioned already (as I've shamelessly skipped to the end of the thread!), I use my mobile, htc one, and an app called videoreg. Works a treat. Overlays speed, gps, map, elevation, etc etc over videos. Loads is customisations, I'd recommend it.

My phone sits in its window mounted dock and just films away. App cost me £1.79

think a few do this too as an alternative, though the drawback is you have to remember to set it up every time where as a dashcam does it automatically so avoiding the law of sod which states the time you'd need it is the time you left your phone at home/ forgot to set it up etc....

Problem with using a phone when I use it as a satnav!

Right I've downloaded daily roads driver app which will run in the background apparently. I'm about to road test it. If it works it's free or £1.80 ad free. The hardest part is going to be mounting my phone
