Near side rear light cluster replacment

Featured Replies

Afternoon...

Well it had to happen, nummnuts and his stiff back reversed out on the mirrors, nudged the hedge and and something (more substantial than the ivy making up 94% of the hedge :wall: ) has holed the rear light cluster.

Is this replaceable by a compent lay-person or do I need to hand the car over to a garage for an hour or so? I am in Surrey, RH8, if anyone can recommend somewhere to get it done please?

Thanks

Matt

I'd have thought this would be an easy replacement

Easy peasy job, shame yours is an estate, I could have sold you one for a tenner

Yours is the same sett up pull back carpet, unclip lights then unscrew the nuts holding on and take out ,(the bolts are part of the light cluster I have a

small /mini ratchet sett from Halfords,,( around £12 ) if you enlarge photo, click on it, look at the right side you can see the tiny holes the bolts go through 2012-06-24165247.jpg

Heater to keep you warm in the boot mate?! :p

As others have said, it's a pretty simple procedure, just make sure you can get the correct tools and off you go :) Try a breakers yard too for a value used part!

That was when we had that torrential rain for a month, did not use the car, one of my daughters back from uni had been in my car to copy a cd, she must have preesed too long and all my windows were down a touch, the seats were sodden, seat door bins full to the top with water, that pic in the above post is where after I had died the car out , (with the heater,) lamps removed as the condensation was getting to them

You do not need to remove the trim, just fold it back

Oh wow, so that was a nice surprise then!! Hope it's all dried out now! :)

Its dead easy... 15 minutes max.

1) Pull off the carpet / bootliner flaps inside the boot allowing access to the back of the lights.

2) Unplug the large electrical connector and tuck it out of the way.

3) Squeeze the two plastic lugs which releases the bulb holder from the back of the actual cluster.

4) Manipulate the bulb holder towards you away from the cluster, be careful as the bulbs can get caught as they pull out through their access holes.

5) Now the bulb holder is removed your visibility improves! You should then see four silver threaded bolts that secure the cluster to the body of the car, two at the top and two at the bottom. Unscrew the nuts (be careful not to drop them as you thread them off the end of the bolts).

6) The light cluster should then pull away from the car - there is a foam / rubber pad which seals any water / wind ingress. This may casue resistance when trying to remove the cluster but just push/pull a little harder and will come away easily enough.

7) Once it releases don't pull it away from the car too fast. There are two independantly wired 5W bulbs. These just pull out from the cluster but only become visiable once the cluster is released from the car slightly.

The hardest bit of the whole process is getting your spanner over the end of the threaded bolts, if you have small hands you'll have an advantage when it comes to turning them off the last few threads!

Hope this helps!

5 mins max

Race is on lol.

Race is on lol.

I take them out every month for a proper detail, fronts as well, you need the mini socket sett as I said above, you do not drop screws and so much faster, 5 mins is being conservative! :giggle:

Thanks all.

I'll aim for 4:59 and get back to you :giggle:

Shame they don't do them for the hatch, description says station wagon / estate only :-(

IIRC the hatch ones are "in development" according to another Brisky member (sorry, can't remember who though).

So, only 18 months later :)

From Silver1011's guide I've done the deed to both after some kind soul broke the o/s in a car park in March

50 minutes to change the pair so I need to practice.

Adding to the comments above:

  • I am clearly an idiot but I was unable to remove the lining. Luckily i have fairly nimble hands.
  • A mini socket socket helps no end, the nuts are 8mm
  • The top, outer nut on the o/s is a swine if you do not / cannot remove the linng in the Octy II estate because of the indent for the breakdown triangle.
  • On the O/S, replave the two wired in bulbs, BEFORE replacing the main mount in grey plastic for the other bulbs.

Old one out, ready for the new one,

Thanks for the help.

Very good, but did you put the rabbit down first as it is easier with two hands !  :giggle:

If Violet had of been there she would nibbled the wires before you could say "Rabbit casserole".
