MDI cable - standard or not - VRS

Featured Replies

My Fabia Vrs estate (racing blue, black alloys) will be delivered on Wednesday which of course I'm very excited about. However I was under the impression that Skoda supply an MDI cable as standard with the VRS's. I spoke to the dealership (Dennis Horton, Lincoln) today to request a mini usb cable and not an I-pod cable and they didn't have a clue what i was talking about. Am I wrong in thinking that the customer should be able to specify which MDi cable they would like? I may have the wrong end of the stick.

Your 100% correct. They play dumb as most would just buy one

Mine never came with one just bought one of eBay in the end

Before collection I specified a mini USB cable to the supplying dealer.

Upon collection this was in the glovebox along with an iPod cable as, in the dealer's words "That was in the car when it arrived from the factory so you may as well have that too".

Never used the iPod cable as most of my music is on a Seagate portable hard drive.

Thanks for the advise, I will persevere tomorrow.

The dealer, if decent, will give you the choice of an Apple or USB MDI lead.

Our MDI seem to struggle to power the hard drive so we use big USB sticks instead.

I had an ipod mdi cable sitting in the glove box when I collected the car. Not sure if it was dealer supplied or skoda but as the bag it was in was the worse for wear I have a feeling it was dealer. Ipod cable is what I wanted anyway so didn't ask about a usb one.

I didn't get a cable with my car and never thought to ask for one at the time -bought one on eBay for a fiver

Got my Vrs from Hortons last year, not new, 8 months old. No MDI cable at all, no satnav disc either. Got a disc of them after a little complaining. Bought the MDI cable, like others have said from ebay. iPod cable £30+ from dealer, £12 from ebay, no contest. Hortons are normally good though, so make sure they know you should have the cable.

The problem is that the cable should come direct from Skoda uk with the car. If it doesn't the dealer must pay for it out of their own pocket.

Dealer should order the cable with the car, mine didnt ! However when I picked up the car they apologised and asked me which cable i wanted and it was mailed to me within 1 week - no arguments.

End of the day it should go on the order form with the car and from what I found out should be in the glove box when the car arrives at the dealer.

Good luck

My dealer didn't give me one when I collected my car, on the grounds that they'd run out of stock...

Contacted Skoda UK to ask for one and then recieved a call from the dealer for my address etc. They sent the wrong cable, but I went to my local Skoda spares dept and they exchanged it for the connection i wanted

I had the USB one in the Scirocco (should have had both, apparently), but the iPod one in the vRS. I "forgot" to leave the USB one in the Scirocco when it went back

mine came with an ipod mdi. I asked if i could have a usb one instead and basically got told you get what you're given, lol!

My dealer asked which one i wanted and gave me an ipod one , i then sourced a genuine VAG one on ebay for £5 to get a usb as well

Can i just check one thing (ordering my vrs v soon) - with either the ipod or usb type MDI cable, do they both allow artist, album and track details to be displayed on screen on the standard audio system?

Am tempted to go down the USB route so that i can just dump all the music on the memory stick and leave it permanently in the car but just want to make sure that this will still give the same interface/display details that you would get with a ipod.

Yep - displays it all (assuming the info is on the file header info to start with).

  • 1 month later...

Have my 16GB memory stick ready to go (vrs not due for another month though!), about to order my USB MDI lead from ebay.

Does anyone know if this is the correct OEM P/N: 5N0.035.558??

Cheers

Andy

I got my Monte from Hortons, I asked about a mini usb mdi cable and got the standard ipod one and usb with the car (no extra cost). I suggest you speak to Oliver Horton as he was the one who sorted me out with mine, no questions asked. I have my mini usb linked to a 500G b hard drive and it works perfectly
