06 Plate Fabia TDI PD 100 Turbo Whistle

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

This is my first post/query so hope this is the right way to do it!

I bought this car about a month ago from a Skoda dealer and took out the WMS Warranty Service. I recently took it back because I noticed a couple of issues that were concerning me and they seemed to have an explaination for all. I also own a 2001 SDI 1.9 Fabia which i've had for 3 years, so maybe I'm comparing too much to that car.

Basically main issue is occassionally when the car is idling you can hear a high pitched whistle coming from the engine, but it doesn't last and also when accelerating at about 1500-1800 RPM there is a high pitched whistle/whining noise.

Engine is still pulling hard and turbo is definately working but was wondering if i should get a second opinon as these guys had the car for literally 2 hours before they said "come pick it up, nothing wrong".

In addition i seem to be getting a combined of about 53mpg, and extra urban at a push is 55-58mpg, shouldn't these figures be a bit higher? I'm a pretty reserved driver. as trying to save money!

Appreciate any advise on this issue and trust you guys will know if i'm being paranoid / being a Auto hypochondriac.

Cheers,

Chambesa.

I have the same problem! When on boost 3k upwards there's a distinct whistle from the turbo and a flat spot in the power curve. It seems there's a split in the pipe which only opens up at a certain pressure. Been like it for a while and the car runs fine and still pulls like a train and i thought it was normal but this thread made me think i might have a leak too. I believe I've also lost mpg, did a motorway run averaging 70mph and returned only 50mpg and was expecting 60 to 65. Going to have a look tomorrow but interested in a resolution to OP's problem..

Turbo whistle is completely normal around the 2K mark. Mine also whistles a little bi on tick over on and off had my car for 3 years now and it's something it's always done.

Mine whistles, but of the whistle slowly dies off after the revs drop they may be something wrong. If its only quiet don't worry too much I reckon

When I bought my 2007vRS in 2010 I queried the dealer about the turbo whistle - we went out for a test run and he said it was perfectly OK - he said there is variation in the loudness car to car - turns out my 2004vRS was a quiet one.

I do find it really quite annoying - but in 12,000 miles it hasn't got any worse, so I'm putting up with it for now.

Vrs fabia's have a quite noticable noise, as above they all seem to be different but thats ok. After working on them for a few years now i only just realised yesterday that my pd100 does it ive had the car for like a year and a half and only just realised think i need to pay more attention! Lol but its ok to have a turbo whistle :)

Start the car up and let it run, if the whistle starts after a mnute or two

while the car is still idling then that's a normal feature.

Sounds kind of like an old fashioned hob kettle simmering at just below boiling.

If you blip the throttle it should stop for a short while, then start again when car

goes back to idle.

As for whistle while you are driving along, I think that's just the turbo working you

can hear. You probably notice it more because the TD engine runs quieter than

the one in your SDI so it's an 'extra' sound compared to what you are used to.

I don't know if there's a difference in soundproofing between the two cars but my vRS

at 50mph was considerably quieter than the SDI at the same speed. But you could

hear the turbo over the engine as it's a high frequency sound.

By the way, I had both an SDI and a vRS for a number of years so I am

familiar with how both cars sound.
