Well the black plastic is your rocker/cam cover mate.

I don't know if it can cause issues but I'd imagine so as you'll be losing pressure through it, I don't know if I'm correct and wouldn't want to worry you unnecessarily but I'd put a post up about it ASAP, just in case.

You'll need one off an asz or possibly a blt etc. I think mate, along with a new rocker cover gasket.

Edit - Jason had one for sake a while ago

Have you driven it since you broke that? I don't think it would run right, losing pressure etc

  • Author

I did go out for a drive for about 15 minutes and it was running absolutely fine, apart from a bit of steam coming out when i got back. I've tried a mini fix just to hold it down while driving until i can get another one to replace it.

Does anyone else that has got this mod with the catch can have this much steam coming out:

Also switched the box in the hope of fixing my random rev issue mentioned earlier in the thread:

Went for a run out afterwards and it seems to have done the job but won't find out until i head home tomorrow.

Looking smart!

The only issue I can think of with the split rocker cover will be the risk of contaminates getting into the top of the engine. You won't be losing anymore pressure than normal, it's just escaping through the crack instead of through the catch can, that will not cause any issues :).

I've sealed up the crack as much as i could and looking out for a new cam cover, so hopefully there won't be too many issues with it between now and the time i replace it.

If any contaminates do get in, am i looking at just an oil change or something more serious??

It all depends on what gets in really! Anything in the oil is pretty bad, and because it will be entering from the top of the engine it will be after the filter.

Any other fluid such as water is going to be bad news but so long as it's well sealed up I can't imagine any large solids getting in there! Although personally I'd be looking for a new cover asap :)

Already on the case of tracking down a new cover and could potentially have one but it's designed slightly differently on the top. Do you know if this will make a difference???

I'll PM you some pics if that helps.

Well, tried to change the cam cover but hit a stumbling block after being able to undo all but 1 of the bolts, the 1 Devonutopia thought i might struggle with under the EGR. Looked at taking the EGR off but couldn't seem to budge it after undoing the x2 bolts holding that on and starting running out of time due to going for a meal with family and needing to drive home, so tightened everything back up and will try again in a few weeks. I checked my pikey fix on the crack and it seems to be holding it down nicely, so it should be okay as i don't tend to use the car much in the week.

Also, if you read this Adam, i never got round to phoning your garage to order those headrest bits, so i'll be making a call sometime soon, though may leave it until April.

I'm also planning on getting rid of the catch can and just running some pipe under the car to vent to air. It might just be me but i feel like the air being vented into the bonnet and then escaping is making the front of my car really dirty quite quickly, so it just seems easier to vent under the car. ;)

Tried something out, just a quick job and would do it more professionally if i were to do it again but what do you think??

PastyBoy badge:

I really like the look of both of the above, though if i decided to use the one i sprayed up, then i would need something to stick behind it and attach it properly. Anyone any ideas what could be used for this??

They both look really cool. The pasty badges have a real modern/ urban look

  • Author

It does and it looks great against my freshly sprayed grill surround as well, i'm just not sure whether to use them for something else and go the route of spraying up the other badge properly or use the Pasty badges and not worry too much about spraying up the badge.

Go for the one you made! Looks smart and I was thinking of doing that but in red for mine!

You could make a template out of Perspex of something like that :)

Cheers.

The more and more i look at them, the more i'm tempted to redo my badge and hope it come out better. I originally sprayed it with Plasti-dip, with grey plastic primer on top of that and then Skoda Rallye Green and lacquer to finish off. :)

I'm not sure whether to repeat that process and hope it comes out better or go the route of roughing up the badge, use proper primer and etching primer and then spray it. At least with using plasti-dip, i can peel it off a bit easier if it doesn't work out too well.

I'll worry about it after my holiday i think. B)

Also, does anyone know the best way to remove the cam cover, especially the bolt under the EGR?? I don't really want to have to remove the EGR but if that's what it takes, then i'll do it but hopefully there is a way to remove it with a special tool or something.

Any ideas??

Going to respray the one currently on the car with grey plasti-dip.

Also sprayed the rear light holders ready to go in the car, whenever that may be (only had them a year now)...

Hoping the colour (Vauxhall anthracite) will match nicely with my headlining. :)
