The last digit is the year it was built, the first one is the decade and which half of the year. ie. 04 & 54 are the 2004 builds, 14 & 64 are the 2014 builds, 0 & 5 being the decade starting 2000, 1 & 6 being the decade 2010 onwards, when it comes around, 2 & 7 will be 2020 onwards.

Add another one to this club.

UK 56 plate (Jan 2007) vRS 2.0T, 62k miles. Full Skoda service history.

March '16. Sudden loss of drive with engine juddering. It felt like constantly driving two gears higher than appropriate. Limped to the dealer.

Verdict: top half of engine starved of oil, probable head gasket failure. Camshaft seized, pistons bouncing off the valves.

Quoted £4k for a refurbished engine from Skoda.

I wish I'd read this thread shortly afterwards. I paid £6.5k in Oct 13. I probably could have got an engine fitted for 2k and sold the car on but would be lucky to get 4k for it. Dealer flogged it for a grand and I ordered a new vRS on PCH.

A 2007 vRS petrol has a different engine to the ones being talked about in this thread.

The 2007 engine has a cambelt and is a EA113 where as the engine fault being discussed in this thread is for the EA888 engine which has a camchain.

Still not good though, I thought the EA113 engine was fairly reliable.

All good, although yours wasn't timing chain tensioner related, it's still good for us to know. Does sound like the excessive oil usage or dodgy oil pump / crud in the oil pick up may have lead to yours going unfortunately. Is that what your mechanic believed caused your problem?

Head gasket had gone apparently, but at what point I don't know. I didn't speak to the Skoda mechanic directly but I was told that the oil on the fill cap was like mayonnaise. There were no overt warning signs. The oil on the dipstick looked normal and there was no overheating showing on the oil temperature gauge. All I really know is what I posted above.

I think I may be joining the list too soon. My car is dead on the driveway currently awaiting further investigation.

I have just joined this mighty list! Skoda have just quoted me £6k for a new engine but i need to pay £400 to get it diagnosed before they can tell me whats actually wrong with it  :thumbdown:

Same I've not taken it anywhere but I'm confident it's failed at the tensioner.

Sorry to hear about the woes!

 

I phoned Skoda Uk first and they said there was nothing they could get involved with until it had been properly diagnosed at an official Skoda garage. So I got it booked in with the local garage and said okay to all the work costs to diagnose the problem £400+ and then when they phoned and told me the situation and what it would require (and the horrendous cost) I said as I said in my other post that it was a non serviceable part and should last the lifetime of the engine and that I wasn't prepared to pay as it was essentially a common fault. So the diagnoses cost was included in my final bill for £583.

Just a query on this Subject.

 

I have a 2010 FL 1.8 TSI L&K Octavia that I bought in April this year.

 

It had a new replacement engine fitted in Jan 2014. The whole engine has 10/13 date codes all over it.

 

Would this replacement engine be fitted with the replacement tensioners?

 

I am not overly concerned at the moment as it sounds tiptop with no rattles or noises at all.

Was your car outside of the warranty? What age and milage was it?

Right, now I've got my head together I will repost,

My 11 plate Superb 1.8TSI rattles slightly on start up, guessing chain tensioner just taking up slack, but I think also it might be burning a bit of oil also, hence my slightly stressed deleted post the other day,

So as a Volvo technician, I'm quite capable of fitting the new chain and tensioner set up, but if it's burning oil is it worth ? I personally can't afford a new engine, plus I still owe on the loan for the car, so can't get rid of it either, I wouldn't want to anyway as its been an excellent car,

I guess it depends a bit on how much oil it's using. Mine was going through a litre in c300 miles initially but that quickly went to a litre in 150 miles. If it's not using too much I would be tempted to sort the chain tensioner and just accept the oil use. It's a rock and a hard place for sure and I totally understand what you mean about it being an excellent car (apart from the engine!).

If its rattling then I would not use it till its fixed. Its a big risk, whilst I was waiting for the dealer to do mine it let go big time. Seriously, don't drive it!

Get it fixed mate as some one who put it off the stress and potential cost to get it sorted is not worth the money saving by not getting it done.

I've had an endoscope down the plug holes and can't see any damage so I'm going to replace the chain, tensioner, etc myself and then see if I get any compression. Im hoping that as mine has failed whilst on the drive rather than under load it'll be okay.

If I've got no compression or some cylinders are down I'll take the head of and get everything reconned.

Been quoted by TPS £375 for timing chain, tensioner, chain guides and lower cover, seems a bit steep that, and I'm in the trade

Just the parts? Skoda quoted me about 45 for the tensioner, I need to order the other parts this week so I'll put the prices in here when I've had a quote.
