They might surprise us and get it together for quali :giggle: . Need to keep reminding myself I have an extra day to wait for the next part of this weekend.

Glad they weren't allowed to change it, tyres are the same for everybody, why change it to suit the characteristics of certain teams because they don't have the best 'complete package' in terms of car. To me, that defeats the point of having a single supplier :giggle: .

http://www1.skysports.com/formula-1/news/12433/8730441/Pirelli-close-to-deal-on-Canadian-GP-tyre-changes-but-still-uncertain-over-F1-future

There will obviously be changes - but this at least suggests there is consultation so hopefully it should minimise the impact.

I'm also fairly sure they say that the Red Bull is 'front-limited' so shouldn't benefit from a change in rear tyres... Although Mercedes are probably hoping to!

Ah, a formula 1 thread, didt know this was here

What aggravated the whole situation, which was already rather tense as we know it, was last race catastrophic tyre delaminations. If it only stayed at the "falling off the cliff" grip-wise level there'd be just grumbling and fist shaking. Now they have the safety card to play and will have a genuine case for FIA to intervene. Will change the longevity of the compounds? They might just do it through this back door and that would be telly tragic in my eyes. Irony is that Pirelli did exactly what they were asked to do (bar structural failures of last week) and because some powerful teams failed to design their cars to work with the given tyres they are now being bashed for it. Damned if they do damned if they don't...

Apparently the FIA have said "Non!" (source Autosport).

Last season they were able to complete 10-15 laps on the tyres they qualified on. This season, they struggling to get 5-10 laps without them dropping off substantially.

Last season IMO, the balance was perfect between wear rate and longevity to keep both qualifying and race day entertaining.

But this year with cars sandbagging on qualifying or not even taking part in Q3 etc just to save tyres is stupid. Maybe they should brnig points into the qualifying as well, to encourage them. 0 points for last place, going up incrementally to 22 points for pole position. At least that way they ned to [perform well in both to stay in the running for the tiltles and also teams at the back could actually start to gain some points in the season, instead of the last 6 or so guys finishing the season with zero points!!

I've said that for years. Qualifying needs to be celebrated to even if you only get a a few points for Pole. It only takes one point to win a Championship, ask Kimi or Lewis. As far as I'm aware no tyres have delaminated or failed. They've fallen apart after running over carbon bits on track but this is understandable. Pirelli have said that this years tyres are more resistant to puncturing. Alonso had a puncture last race and it practically went unnoticed. Pirelli said if he was on last years rubber he would have lost.

The tyres are a bit soft but the reason Lotus and Ferrari are doing well is they've worked out the balance properly and are actually racing on them. If they care coping them IMO teams like Red Bull have no excuse for their moaning. It's another variable they have to account for. If they don't then they lose.

However, F1 is about being at the epitome of performance.

The Mercedes is the fastest car plain and simple followed by the Red Bull. If the tyres were more durable, the likes of Ferrari and Lotus wouldnt be able to keep up in a race because they arent able to go as fast, where they succeed is in making their tyres last, not outright perfrormance. I dont like the idea of teams having to drive slower than they potentially could purely because they are looking after tyres.

I think it's more about the balance of it. Looking after your tyres to make them last longer has always been a feature of F1 and always will be, but at the moment these tyres seem to completely lose grip after just a few laps of pushing hard.

Who can remember the likes of Senna, Mansell, Berger etc changing rubber and then going on a 10 lap bonsai mission to catch back up and then challenge for the lead? That was racing - with these Pirrelli's it seems like that 'charge' would fizzle out after 4-5 laps.

I don't personally have a problem with the teams being given tyres that degrade after a certain amount of use, the Goodyear tyres that they replaced were just silly as if it hadn't been for the "two compounds" rule the thought was that those tyres could have lasted the entire race, but to me it seems Pirrelli have taken the degradation just that little bit too far.

They should go back to last years tyre compounds IMO.

From what i gather, Canada's race wil have tyres using last years construction method, but with this years compounds.

I've been saying for years that if you don't set a time in Q3, then you should have to start the race on the tyres you set your fastest lap in Q2 with.

Thoughts on Monaco:-

1) Ok, it is possible to overtake there, at least with the current tyres.

2) Other than Wee Paul, has anyone overtaken for position at Ste Devote in a "slicks and wings" car after lap 1?

3) Will Roman Grosjean be at the Canadian GP other than as a spectator?

4) Max Chilton is still unproven, but keeping it "on the black stuff" here is far from easy.

There are four places for overtaking. Last two turns before pit straight, ed of pit straight, 180deg hairpin and first turn after the tunnel exit. All of them were utilised by different drivers to excellent effect during the race.

I must admit I am badly disappointed with Checo. His repeated overtake attempts at the same spot were plain stupid reaching the heights of Moronism when he almost took Kimi out ! What a tool!

I think I will watch it again it was so good :) Highlights of course ;)

Monaco is a perfect race for highlights. Perez needs to calm down. It's fine to make legitimate pass attempts but that move would never work on Kimi. Did argue with someone who thought it was Kimi's fault. I don't see how. He stuck the the racing like and round Monaco it's pretty narrow as it is. Kimi drove like a demon to get 10th back.

Sadly they didn't show Kimi's charge! I will have a nosey in the bet but if anybody has a link to a vid showing Kimi's charge it'd appreciated :).

Nobody mention red flag after that massive Maldonado's off, who was that run into the back of him?

And what was with two (three?) cars taking the escape route after the tunnel?

I think I do need to watch again :D

Biggest let down for me was Lewis stuffing up with keeping a gap to Nico which ended up losing him second place. Although I've got to wonder why he was asked to maintain a 6 second gap (according to press reports), maintaining a gap sure ... but 6 seconds? Seems excessive to me.

I also reckon Checo was suffering from red mist during the race, I think he saw that the McLaren was on better pace in this race compared to the rest and wanted to take maximum advantage of it, there's absolutely no way that Kimi was at fault for that coming together IMHO.

I don't understandy why they need any gap. There is enough room in those pits for the cars to be stacked so stack them. Worst case it will be a second or two slower than optimum due to him having to start from standstill but not the 6 which cost him 2nd place.

They showed it right at the end of the BBC highlights coverage on Iplayer, skip forward to about 1hr 27. Rather amusingly, at least one of the drivers thought they were being lapped and moved over for Kimi which is partially how he managed to get to 10th.

It was Max Chilton who went into the side of Maldonado which could have been pretty nasty the way Maldonado's car stopped, Chilton got a drive through.

And what was with two (three?) cars taking the escape route after the tunnel?

What point in the race was that? Grosjean smacked into the back of Riccardo just after the tunnel so both cars ended up down the escape route, Grosjean gets a ten place grid drop penalty at the next race for causing the accident.

I've been fairly disappointed with the ridiculous tyre wear this year and not that interested in the races so I was expecting Monaco to be pretty dull but it was fairly lively with antics of some of the drivers. I couldn't believe Perez kept trying that overtake at the tunnel as the only way it would really work is if other drivers moved out of the way to give him room, I thought it was a bit unfair on Alonso given Perez had barged into him and forced Alonso out of the way. I thought it was entirely Perez's fault when he rammed into the back of Kimi, he can't expect drivers to jump out of his way when he's coming from behind like that and the way he was driving it was inevitable he was going to collide with someone. I'm surprised he didn't get any penalty for it.

Just caught up on iplayer, Kimi's charge was great. He's hungry, would of been a great post race interview, may of even gotten a few more words than normal!

Maldonado, ouch, 9g impact DC said. That is going to ache in the coming days.

Checo's turning out to be disappointing from a racing drivers demonstration, more bumper cars on a saturday night. Does he think Grosjean is a gonna, so wants to take his mantle? Think he's trying to hard and will annoy drivers/people. Loved how he said jb and alsonso let me pass there... JB is a true diplomat, but is he hungry or just maintaining this year knowing it's not a winning form car/season...

Shame they were not racing, but that at least led to some antics and great space/perceptive movement further down the field. Loved Seb's comment on the radio after fastest lap towards end, he seems to be getting cheekier too. Then to LH, always seems to be sulking of late, couple of million pound mistake made there, at least he coughed up for it.

Is anyone going to the British GP ?

A family friend who works for one of the teams is trying to score me a ticket.

Fantastic effort from Bottas yesterday! I know part of it was down to the changing conditions but even so, takes some real skill in those conditions to eek out a decent lap. I hope he can get a decent points finish out of it. While I am on the subject, last year Maldonado was rated a supposedly very quick driver when he wasnt crashing, but that was using Senna as the benchmark. So far this season Bottas has out qualified him and out finished him in races too. I wonder how well he would have done if he was in the Williams last year? Possible race winner for sure, one for the future I think.

Bottas has a potential and he showed it today quite clearly defending well and actually overtaking as well.

Pity Rosberg went backwards but Alonso fully deserved second place - what a charge!

Vettel run a perfect race again with only one laps of concentration when he kissed the wall - it was quite disconcerting to hear the crowds booing him and shouting "Alonso" when Eddie was interviewing him. Paul DiResta run 50 laps on medium compound!1 Who said tyres were crap and falling apart? :D.

Paul Di Resta was my driver of the day. Think even the team were surprised how well he did on them and he made the call when to pit. He's been pretty annoyed at team mistakes and its understandable. But if he ever ends up in a McLaren that won't stand. McLaren just get worse. Broken a run of over 60 point scoring races. They've almost become the new Williams. Jenson couldn't wait to get out of the car. Wonder if he'll retire soon
