Could you super charge it? May give better gains without the turbo lag?

  • Well after a really early start this morning I have sold my Golf to a guy from Dartford, he has big plans for more power, a roll cage and getting it road legal again, I agreed to deliver it for some b

  • 2015 is now here, the next chapter in the life of the Golf is about to begin!  After the low boost set up in 2014, I am happy to run that in 2015 whilst I go collecting parts again, the plan is 450 bh

  • Just spoken to Wayne and paid him, he has squeezed 280.6bhp at 6450rpm and 274 lb/ft torque at 4300rpm with 6psi boost, so I am quite happy with these figures, from a stock block and piston, he has al

The kit would go straight away but you need to weigh up the costs, you have the kit so use it :)

Supercharge would work as would the turbo kit I already have, my main concern is reliability..

I might take stock of what I have and see what I need to make it turbo'd, decisions decisions....

How Fast will be N/A but who knows later in the year, totally undecided.

The kit doesn't go off, so you don't have to fit it this second

Spend a bit of time tweaking handling, get to know the car more

There's quite alot more you can do on the handling front

Disappointing that you are not going through with the turbo conversion. I feel a few points have been missed however. Firstly with regard to reliably a turbo engine is no less reliable than an NA engine provided it is mapped correctly. You mention that you are going for cams and porting work? This will give modest gains and bad drivability and economy "off cam". Nitrous is as much of a reliability concearn as turbo if mapped incorrectly.

You need not run much boost at all to get the same gains you would get with cams and porting. 5psi would do it. Ultra reliable, fuel economy off boost not effected.

Secondly with regard to "lag" or throttle response, this is not going to be a problem with a 2800cc V6! Especially if you leave the compression std with very low boost (as above) or even at 9:1 with your spacer plate and a bit more ignition advance. Also the turbo you have is not big for a 2.8, quite the opposite, lag will be minimal.

I understand the turbo conversion is not an easy one and this is probably the main reason for straying away from it, physically bolting bits on is easy, it's all the other stuff that goes with it. If done properly you will require uprated parts such as fuel pump and clutch, intercooler and pipework, from that I can see why it would be easier to bolt in camshafts and leave it be.

Entirely Up to you of course and I wish you luck with whatever you choose to do. Perhaps just leave the engine alone altogether if reliably is a concern?

I see your point 4moturbo, I have a dinner time appointment with my trusty mechanic tomorrow (I have to take the biscuits) so we are going to discuss what or how we proceed, as you say 5 psi might be the way to go and leave the head spacer alone for now, a map and uprated fuel pressure might just give it enough without being too much.

I will let you know after I have spoken to the guy tomorrow.

Yeah, superchargers are ok but don't give a very good spread of power. Most sc cars runs std compression/engine and 5-7psi no intercooler! Same can be done with turbo. I did exactly that with my mates Peugeot 205 gti-6, it went from 168bhp to a dyno proven 236bhp at only 5psi, gt30 turbo, std engine no intercooler, aem for engine management

I have spoken with Simon at Central VW and we are going to just bolt everything on, get it mapped and see what we get with a low boost of 5-7 psi.

This will be with an intercooler but using standard injectors etc, just a re map, work will be done in the next month or so, pictures to follow.

Good man! :)

Had a maul with the Golf today, removed the rear bumper and disposed of the crash bar, all 11 kilos of it, in the process I dislodged spiders and other hibernating furry animals too, it was filthy behind the bumper.

In addition to removing some rear end weight, I also removed the front bumper and headlights, the headlights are now on the internet for sale as I have bought a set of standard replacement lights as xenons are not needed. I just need to fathom out what wire does what on the loom so I can wire the standard lights in as the connectors are different.  :wonder:

Final thing I did was to fit a cone filter and take it for a blast, it would have been rude not to on such a lovely warm day

Not much been going on with the Golf lately, I have been busy with a career change and I actually have to work 5 days a week now!

I managed to get to a sprint event at Barkston Heath on Mothers day and really enjoyed my day out. Our best time was 58.4 seconds to travel 3/4 of a mile on a twisty track. The journey there was quite harsh, bucket seats, hard suspension and no sound deadening at all, however the drive home was even worse as I was really tired and it felt twice as far as the journey there.

The car did give me some issues and I have to sort them asap. The first was a strange one, when sitting waiting for each run the revs would build to about 2,200 rpm on there own, pressing the clutch pedal down the revs would drop back to where they should be, a second or two later and up the revs would go again    A quick diag with VCDS and no faults found, reset the throttle body and no difference either, next I am going to replace all the vacuum pipes as they look poor but I can't make the link between the clutch pedal sending the revs back down, am I missing something simple?

Anyway, here are a few clips of the runs at Barkston and as you will see I was a little giddy

and a photograph I have borrowed off the net showing a little air beneath the tyres too.

Looks like a good day out.

How many runs did you have..

It was good fun, I think we did about 18 maybe 20 runs, this included two runs on the really rough other track that didn't do the car any good tbh.

Maybe clutch switch James?

Need to get in there and have a good look around, all vacuum pipes will be replaced anyway but good call on clutch switch.

How you finding the gaz gha's? Tempted for a set at some point.

I really can't fault them, a simple adjustment to soft for the road part keeps things nice and smooth, then when at the track, wind them up hard and everything sits nice and flat through the corners, if the going is wet, soften them up again  and improve turn in.

For the money they really are very good, especially when you consider the Golf is heavy lump the GHA's handle things very well.

I dropped on these today, a small fee of labouring was required to get them, I had to cut some trees down and mulch them, so after a good vacuum I am now cleaning them with some Auto Glym stuff  I have robbed from my lads detailing stash, not doing a bad job either  ;)  as a result of these going into the Golf I will have some Motordrive seats looking for a new home, one is only a clubman seat so quite basic but does the job, the other is more like what you see here.

James the one who went out Joe in his?

Ruined the paint on your Brembos after 1 session on track like mine? :)

I did go out on track with Joe Yes and after one session at oulton park the paint on my Brembo's went from red to brown yes.

Nice to meet you Dan  :)

Small world, didn't realise it was you when you were speaking of the Golf :)

Having my brakes changed tomorrow they're knackered!

  • Author

The track really does muller the brakes, first castle combe I did with the Fabia I drove home with hardly any pedal and used the handbrake a few times to stop!, The OEM pads had just melted and deformed.  I use DS3000 in the Golf as it is a big heavy lump to try and stop.

I spent most of the morning looking for an oil leak on the Golf today, loads of traffic film remover in its neat form and brake cleaner to get rid of all the dirty residue off the bottom of the engine, now it is all shiny and I am ready to look for the leak.

I also removed more weight, the rest of the airbags have now been removed along with the standard inertia reel seat belts and pre tensioners, I have used the standard airbag delete resistors off ebay and so far so good, no lights are present on the dash, so I am a happy chappy.

Also washed it and took it for a blast, just to dry out the brakes honest.

Tomorrow I am going to re-weld the seat bracket on the passenger side so my new seat will fit back in.

I have just had a message asking if I can drop the Golf off for the turbo conversion in three weeks time    looks like project "blow job" will be going live soon.

Fantastic :)
