AZQ 1.2 12valve Timing chain

Featured Replies

Hi.

I've had to purchase a 2nd hand AZQ engine to replace mine which had the timing chain guide shear off and cause it to self destruct. The engine I now have ready to be fitted is from a polo with 63k. I'm looking to replace the timing chain kit before i fit the engine and wondered if there was an upgraded version out there or if I should just go for a run of the mill kit from ebay?

Has anybody else experienced this fault and what would you recommend please?

Cheers

What year is your car?

What year was the Polo that your replacement engine came from?  If it's a later engine it may not be worth changing the chain kit, as some improved bits were introduced at some point in 2004 I think.  I've not heard of a  guide rail snapping, just chain jumping due to tensioner problems.

I'd be tempted to give VW or Skoda a call, armed with the engine number from the 'new' engine (should be near the join with the gearbox), and ask them to quote for a chain kit for it.  If the price is scary, ask what the part number of the kit is, and see if you can get it cheaper on Ebay.

Be aware that there's some confusing info kicking around regarding the torqueing of the crank pulley bolt.  I think Haynes and early VAG info said 90Nm + 90°, later info I've seen says 150Nm + 180° , some even says "150Nm + 180° ( ¼ turn)". Which seems really inconsistent! I'd be tempted to ask VW/Skoda to clarify this while you are on the phone.

Best of luck with it, and please consider taking some photos if/as you do the job; I've yet to see a 'how to' with good pics online.

Hi. Sorry for late reply.

The replacement engine was from a 2002 Polo. We just ordered one from ebay in the end and it has been fitted recently. 200 miles so far so good.

thanks again for your input

Crank pulley is 90 Nm + 1/4 turn.
