MY CAR IS IN! Monte Carlooooo! (First Car)

Featured Replies

I bought my first car on my 17th Birthday back in 1987. Spent every night in it practicing with friends and family as well as having a proper lesson every week.

Passed my test 12 weeks after my 17th birthday.

It was only an old Mk1 Escort, wish I'd kept it, they are selling for a fortune now.

Cheers

Lee

  • Some helpful and useful points to consider before taking part in this thread.   1. In the Fabia 2 Forum George is the font of all knowledge and has never been known to be wrong on any topic.   2

  • Should be enough for everyone here.  My shout.

  • I feel quite sorry for the OP he started this thread saying how excited he was that his new car was at the dealership and is turned into a complete off topic bicker! Who cares how old he is or where h

Octy vRS mkIII sticking its nose into the 2nd picture... Mmmmm. Want!

With the 19in wheels too!

Let me first say I couldn't give a hoot how it's been paid for. In any case he's a

lucky young fella.

I was just wondering that's all. It kind of makes sense if a great second hand bargain

came up, but in my way of thinking, to have a brand new car just sitting there is madness.

My other half late mum bought her a car when she was 17 before she passed her test.

Not a new one, just an old Fiat Panda.  She did lessons for a year without passing  before

stopping them to leave home to go to university. All together it sat on the drive for two years

before it was eventually sold for naff all just to get it out of the way.

My wife started lessons again a while after she had finished at university and eventually passed

when she was 24. She never ever got to drive the Panda.

Totally logical comment, Garry................your future wife obviously should have left school at 16 to maybe go out and earn £200-£250 per week, as George suggested   ;)

I think someone is stuck in a 70s time warp, when jobs were plentiful, and you could, if you wanted, walk into a reasonably paid job

Enough young lads & lasses on here with Nice cars & new cars, Insured etc.

So is £40-£50 a day net a high wage for a 17 year old grafter paying Taxes these days , or just someone on the grip.?

Jobs are plenty full in many places for those that want them, which is obvious by those that can have more than one job.

(not just a Scottish thing.)

My kids worked and earned and prospered,  & so did their friends, and thats a bit more recent than the 70's.

Must have been working rather than being students in their teens.

Well I walked out of 6th Form, straight into an apprenticeship. Where for my First year i was earning just under the tax free allowance.

And trust me, depending on the conditons at home regarding paying rent/keep to the parents, it is possible to afford a car on finace.

I was paying £312 a month on car insurance alone with my mum as a named driver, whereas colleagues who live in better areas were able to insure the same car, after driving for a similar duration, for £200 a month. Along with paying a certain amount of Keep, and then petrol (I was spending £150 a month minimium)

So what im saying is even on a tight budget/apprentice wage, it was possible for me to finace a car at the time.

jay you going out to see car today?

enjoy

Doesn't 6th form end at age 17/turning 18, not 16?

my my what a furoe over nowt.

I bought myself my first and sebsequent. 2nd hand cars and mechanied and MOT'ed them myself to save money

Including after we were married, when the wife choose not to run a car.

But I gladly and still without a trace of regret, sprung £7000.00 to go halfers in the 20 year old daughters first car, a brand new Yaris.

She had saved the other half.

The Son choose to take the cash and buy a £500.00 banger.(having acquired a student lifestyle taste for Malt whiskys)

But anyway I sat in a Monte Carlo today.

Absolutly lovely car.

So "health to enjoy it" as they say around here.

ps

Pity about the poxy 17" rubber band tyres though.

I just pointed out that 16 year olds can drive, then showed why and how by putting the Link there to be read and explain.

The 16 year olds do not necessarily have an obvious Disability.

Scotland has nothing to do with it, just the document.

(i am in Scotland so am more likely to read Scottish updates on stuff that concerns me.)

But, UK wide DVLA rules.

Re walking into a well paid job, obviously the 16 year old Fishermen were in the 70's,

double or treble a ordinary persons wage. & that was the start until they got a Share.

With HP it has never been about Saving other than a Deposit,

many young people have a deposit and a nice income from doing a good job at 17 year old.

With Lease cars available & High Insurance, many young people bought brand new Fords just a couple of years ago because of the 'Free Insurance'. Ka or Fiesta. Or their parents helped or bought.

It hardly matters why you should see why someone does something, they did and do.

You want to see some school car parks around this way, pupils cars not Teachers.

& the Driving Instructors lining up to collect pupils for driving lessons.

Surely not only a North South divide because i know it happens in many areas of the UK.

george

thats a fair shout, true deep sea fishing is both a real skilled trade and also very dangerous as they are out regardless of the weather and sea conditions; decent fish/shellfish is also very lucrative so can quite believe the car stories. Those that are in the position to run their own boat/s even more so.
