Auxiliary Heater

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just been browsing through the manual iv downloaded in preparation for collecting my car in a few weeks time.

I noticed the handbook mentions a Auxillary Heater and Ventilation.

Does this come on every car or is it an option?

Is it in place to heat the car before getting in for example on a winters morning? :)

Rob

It's an option, think it's Scandinavian countries only.... and other cold places.

Its an option, and yes can preheat the car in the winter or turn on the ventilation on hot days, not air con. Just fresh air. :)

Glad worst uv ever had is -8 haha thats cold enough.

I thought the Auxiliary heater is just an electric heater element for providing warm air into the car before the engine heats up, like you get on VWs and Skoda UK aren't allowed to sell them.

NOT the fuel powered heater for heating the car before you turn it on.

Maybe I'm wrong, in Norway its called parking heater. Maybe its 2 different things?? :)

The auxiliary heating and vent system mentioned in manual is parking heater/webasto. Unit that burns fuel to heat up your car.

It's bit tricky, because usually this name comes for electric heating device (PTC) mounted in heat exchanger in car's cabin. By efficient diesel engines it's very helpful to warm car faster.

I used to have one of these in my Transit when I worked for BT and it was fantastic as it had a timer you could set.

They used to work on diesel but only heated the inside nothing to do with the engine, or at least not on our transits.

The Skoda/webasto work the same way and you can also set a timer.

I wonder if you put in a special request direct with Skoda UK would they try and add it for you?

I'd prefer the warm engine in the morning.

In Canada we had (engine) block heaters fitted to our cars. They were electric and kept the engine hot during temps of -30 degrees.

During the day we would plug the cable from the front of the car into a post in a parking space (110v) and leave it plugged in all day.

I fitted a Frost Heater Zerostart to my Golf and it's been working great. I modified the cable so I didn't have a cable dangling from the grill - since then I've built a garage so don't use it any more but it would heat the interior in minutes after driving off because the engine was already at working temperature.

Kenlowe make a UK version but I don't think I'd fit one to a new car.

I heard that the Webasto also warms up the engine? Or am I wrong?

They do heat up the engine. They work by heating the cars radiator system which then means the heater matrix is warm so warm air can be blown into the cabin and also the engine block is warmer. You get better economy as the engine is up to temp a lot quicker which helps offset some of the fuel the pre heater uses.

I get the impression that the auxilary heater is not something we are to see on UK models, however could someone with a vRS in the UK confirm whether or not auxilary heater is included.

No, it's not for the UK market as we don't temperature low enough to necessitate it.

We can't even get a heated windscreen on some models, let alone special requests for other options.

I ordered (delivery march 14) a vRS with the factory parking heater here in Belgium it can be switched on with a separate remote control or programmed in the

columbus/amundsen. Heats the engine and interior or in summer ventilate the interior.

I have it on order on my 1.8TSI Elegance hatch, as well as heated windscreen and seats. The only dowside it's quite pricey - about 4% of final car value...

So obviously not in the UK- how we dream of 1.8 TSi with multi link rear suspension .................

Sent from my phone so please excuse brevity and spelling

Just tried it with Skoda but as expected its a no go. It would be really useful especially after a winter night shift.

Looks like it will be a Toureg next which has the parking heater as an £800 option

It works wonders both in winter (preheating) and summer (fresh air pumped to car by button press or by time set on Bolero). Easily one of the best options to have on a new car!

I ordered the webasto for winter time, but I must say that the ventilation function is just as useful, might only be a modest air circulation at best. But it really gets the cabin bearable to get into after the car has been coocing in the sun all day. Metal grey is quote dark and black leather does not make things cooler. Ventilation as done by the webasto unit does renarkably well actually. Let see if it is better at heating the cabin than in our defender dt5, that car is a joke in scandinavian winters.

Anyone know if getting one fitted will affect the warranty?

I have a webasto thermotop c sat around from an old project.
