So my Octavia vRS Estate was delivered on Saturday.  Road noise is clearly an issue in this car, it's what the low frequency booming is since it changes with the road surface - I don't remember the test drive I had (in two separate cars back to back) throwing this up.  It's not what I would class as unbearable, just "non-premium" which I guess reflects the position of Skoda in the VAG hierarchy.

I've used Dynamat before to good effect on a Lotus Elise so I might try that in some key places.

What tyres are people who are suffering from this running?  Mine has Bridgestone Potenza S001s and I'm running the standard pressures not the 37 psi "eco" pressure although I do wonder if they might help a bit.

My result from a test drive in my car with the super tech skoda guy was a flat response of 'it sounds like every other one I've been in'. So whoever bet on 'they all do that sir' as a dealer response pay yourself on the back.

I put a rubber boot protector mat in today and it has lessened the noise somewhat. I'd be willing to plaster the boot well in sound deadening if it improved it.

Has anyone got part numbers for the dampers? They must be worth a try?

I'm running the Bridgestone tyres too at about 35psi for now.

Also I saw some sound insulation (the egg box type) and I wondered if some of that stuck to the bottom of the parcel shelf would help?

Looks good but can't see me taking the carpets off the wheel arches. I'm willing to put some of it in the boot but I'm still aware the tailgate is virbrating and it's what is slapping my ears in my opinion!! Could do with the revised parts!

Just get the lock and buffers adjusted to tighten it up.

Mine shuts really nicely, with no slack.

Will give the buffers an adjustment when it's not raining or hail storming like it has been recently ;)

If its the pressure pulses you are experiencing, then the dealer is talking absolute bull.

I would hazard a guess the dealer is well aware of the problem but is unsure of how to sort the problem. In fact, im not sure there are any definite fixes which have fixed everyones car. Certainly try the adjustments to the boot lid, but I believe some have found it hasnt sorted their car. Sorts some, but not others.

Keep on at the dealer, and tell them they are talking bull. Fix or reject.

Oh, and good luck

..or swap the back end for Leon FR IRS suspension, SWMBOs FR rides sooo much better than my O3.

AKAIK, ExSeat is driving a vRS Octy 3, which does have IRS....

Correct, plus I'd not want to touch a Leon after my experience with the mk3 FR that I had!

...it was said tongue in cheek!

We don't want to know about your tongue in cheek!!!

How's Billy?!

Not got Billy the BMW yet, still waiting for the cash to land in my account, but the Easter Bunny has delayed things!

Took the bait on that one Matt, fair play!!

No worries, I assume your Leon was a Torsion Beam rear end? My O3 has the Torture Beam, and new springs and dampers only marginally improved things from poor to bearable, the vRS should be loads better if my experience of each set up is anything to go by.

Its probably not the place to go into my Leon woes but the actual ride quality wasnt an issue. It was the 1.4 so it was the torture beam. The list of issues, design flaws and quality problems with that car were astounding!

Dealer called me back today! Skoda have told them to get the car back in to check hatch alignment etc. Hopefully the first step to getting the shut tightened up and some buffers. All was going well until I found out that a 'courtesy' car will be 12 quid even though it's for warranty purposes. And let's be honest it won't just be 12 quid it will need fuel as well so it's more like 22 quid to get my 2 week old car looked at by the supplying dealer if I want a car. Annoys me that I have to pay them to drive the ****igo should anything happen. Either way, told them to stuff it.

P.s I know what will be said after the check 'everything is within tolerance' etc etc

Courtesy car should be free, especially for warranty work.

Are you going to reject it then?

Might be worth getting on to Skoda Customer services first, see if they can improve the service.

I need evidence of their incompetence first and I need to see if they actually do anything. They seem keen on keeping up appearances so they should respond. I'll be having words about the courtesy car charge in person.

I'm not currently at the rejection end of the spectrum. Its not THAT bad and I genuinely think that it can be throttled back a tiny touch more. Its already reduced with a cheap rubber mat so hopefully some adjustments will see me home clear!!

+1, I'd be fuming if they wanted to charge me a penny. Let us know how you get on.

I got "free" courtesy cars when my O3 had the gear selector mechanism and on another occasion, the DMF replaced, but they tried to charge me 18p per mile for fuel, so I just filled it up to replace what I used and they waved the charge, too right, ha ha!

Some cars have and some dont. What about tow bar or not?

Maybe the cars with towbar has a different floor in the boot that makes thing better?

I've got my new Octavia 1.8 TSI DSG 4x4 L&K Hatch with tow bar today and this car has neither of the problem (except tyre noise - but its 18").

Generally I dont have any boom-boom-boom in my Estate, but over Easter to took a trip onto a road I don't normally travel on and there was a short section of tarmac that did cause my ears to tingle (Basingstoke to Andover).

There was 4.25 people in the car and a boot full of baby equipment so I am not sure if that made a difference.

The road 'looked' ok but there was certainly something in the surface that caused some boom frequencies.  I didn't ask the others if they noticed anything.

If only I understood all the equations in my Noise, Vibration & Harshness module, it might have helped!

Soundproofing the boot:

It would be good to know what the improvments were, it looks a Pritty neat job. Although I don't think it's necessary to cover every last bit of the boot just a good portion of it.
