please can anyone help how sound generator sounds....

See a few posts up, boomy & IMHO rubbish. A complete waste of time & money, for me it spoils and otherwise great car.

I haven't had an issue with mine until today... If anything I've hardly noticed it.

Today my Octavia TSI VRS has developed a raspy annoying reverberating noise in low revs in 2nd and 3rd! I hope this doesn't persist!

Other than this minor minor grumble I'm loving it, much better than my Fabia VRS which it replaced.

I suppose something that basically transmits vibration, will set things off, that may not have rattled otherwise.

Having had my VRS TSI for two days I make the following observations.

*There are no noticeable vibrations from my generator within any mode.

*Sport mode "enhancements" are way too noisy. The sound get tiring rather quickly.

*Normal mode is bearable, but perhaps still a bit too loud for extended use.

*Eco mode is best. Car sounds sporty but not over done.

I would like the option to control the volume manually. Barring this, Eco should be off, Normal should be changed to current Eco setting, and Sport to current Normal Setting. I'll ask the Dealer what can be done via VCDS when the car next visits them. If all else fails or if it really begins to bug me I'll simply unplug the generator.

I think VAG are attempting to make the car sound like a Subaru or similar. There is a broadly similar tone from inside the cabin, but the VRS lacks the off-beat thrum and pops & farts of a boxer engine. My old Subaru's sounded much better from both inside and outside the cabin. What surprises me is how smooth the delivery is for the TSI engine. It really is a peach for a mere straight 4-cylinder. At idle it feels like the engine isn't running at all, even with stop-start deactivated .

My thoughts exactly - I thought I couldn't start it during the test drive! An amazing difference to a MkII 2.0 TDI.

Well I'm now on vRS number 2 and I have to say there is a huge difference in the sound generators.

The old car was subtle in sport mode, just enough to hear when pushing on and hardly noticeable in normal where as the new one is intrusive at really low revs and, like Les said, sounds like a fake boxer engine.

I may need to get it turned down.

That picture reminds me of the Peco Big Bore back box I had on a MKiii XR3i many moons ago.. :)

Adjustable with VCDS

Sent from my phone so please excuse brevity and spelling

With everything else that VCDS can do, this swung it for me - I bit the bullet and bought VCDS. My first job (as a newbie to VCDS) was to turn down the sound generator. Well, actually, I've turned it off completely. Personally, I think that the result is a big improvement - a natural sounding engine rather than an artifical one. Sport mode is actually usable and enjoyable now!

Thank you, andyvee, for pointing the way!

Sound generators are pretty standard equipment on cars nowadays and are found in various forms. A few work through speakers and some such as the Focus feed engine sound into the cabin via ducts at higher revs.

Various Mercedes, BMW (M5, M6, Z4), Porsche, Renaults and Fords have them to name but a few.

You should be able to as a matter of course as the car owner be able to activate & deactivate it at will, I'm sure that it's not beyond Skoda's technical department to write a software revision for the infotainment system which would allow that to happen as you can control numerous other functions from it.

I for one would be extremely grateful to have that option available to me.

I Agree with you, that should be easy to do and may be in a later firmware update? In the meantime you still have the ECO drive mode that sets the sound to a bearable limit (yet to test it myself). My idea would be to switch to ECO mode when on a long M-way run and if the sound becomes tiresome for myself or other passengers. Best and only use for ECO mode...

ECO mode = Quiet mode.

Yeah, but who buys a TSI VRS to drive it in ECO? I for sure didn't...

Me neither but a lot of people on this site seem more concerned with max MPG or annoyed with the sound generator.

I personally think there should only be 2 modes; Normal and VRS Mode - AKA like MAD MAX - NITRO MODE !!

Is this standard on the VRS or is it an option?

Standard in the UK.

OK thanks. Some good examples online for the petrol version. Haven't seen a good video demonstrating it on the TDI yet

For the odd long leisurely journey? Great feature if doing long motorway run surely

To be honest if fuel was no concern I'd not have a 2.0 anyway

I think i'm secretly relieved I have an early car that doesn't have the sound generator! :)

If I did have it though, my ideal would be eco: off, normal: off, sport: as per stock sport mode...

It is a shame that you cannot control the volume within the custom settings. Most of the time I leave my manual TSI in Normal mode, but for long trips I choose Eco to keep the drone down. Sport is just a PITA due to the racket it makes.

Is there any way of telling if your car has it fitted, without dismantling the area at the bottom of the windscreen? I've never noticed a raucous noise, or vibration, so I'm assuming I don't have one.

Squirrelz, not really, apart from with VCDS.

The earliest TDI models didn't (apparently it was originally only going to be on petrol cars, but they changed their mind), from what I understand it's pretty noticeable if you have it!

If you cannot notice it when switching from Eco to Sport you do not have it.

I'm sure my last car had one as the noise changed in sport - but maybe thats just because it got driven harder then! that said, it didn't sound particularly "diesely". The new car is waaaaaay noisier. Almost boxer like. If you having a spirited drive it's fine, but you've got to remember it still sounds like a tractor on the outside!
