Guide: Upgrading Columbus firmware and maps

Featured Replies

He's trying v9 maps (I believe) which do fit on a 30gb HD 3T0...A Columbus running 4020 as that's what I had until last month when I went to 4120.

I'm with the last three posts on this.

I hadn't thought of the SD method Adamal suggests. That's got to be worth a try.

Jon boy: don't give up - you are almost there.

I've said all along that I think your Columbus and my discs don't like each other. That's why you had issues with the firmware.

If everything seems to work, then it's just a map instal needed.

Very stressful, but you are nearly there (and will not be upgrading the firmware again I expect).

V9 maps will certainly fit on a working unit. The fact that they're failing (at the risk of repeating myself) and the firmware has already failed implies that the unit isn't in a state which will accept the maps. I suspect the firmware failed with an 010303 error?

What version maps are you trying to load on. and what size is your hard drive (this can be seen in the developers menu which I presume is activated on your unit?) As said before, if the maps are too large for the partition, then it'll fail.

Try loading on a previous smaller maps version and see if it takes them okay.

V9 maps and 30gb hard drive

Or find someone with a genuine maps disc to put aside any possibility of the dvd burn causing the issue.

Land over to my place and I'll do it for you, although North Yorks is perhaps a little far from Birmngham.

Great idea and thanks for the offer!

Does anyone have any map discs in the Birmingham area that I could borrow?

Thanks, I am just trying v9 disc again just in case!

If you get stuck I have a V2 disc here which you can have to test, and just post it back once you're done with it. I use it just for validation purposes such as this.

Unfortunately this still didn't work!

It failed with 010302 error suggesting a bad / incompatible media.

In any event, the software update ended with an error. That means the software update has failed really, and left the unit with an error which cannot be fixed by trying to force maps onto it. Until the unit is repaired and/or firmware loaded successfully, then it is still going to be a broken unit.

I doubt there's anything more I can say other than that.

Slightly random but I now have v9 maps on the HDD. I used the v9 disc in the DVD drive to travel 45 or so minutes this afternoon. Didnt think anything of it and and when I got home following the return journey and ejected the discs, the maps had copied?

I am obviously delighted to have v9 maps on the HDD but confused as to how it has happened.

It does copy in the background so it either finished off a previously stalled copy procedure or did a full copy in the 45 minutes you drove for (which is about how long it should take). Either way good result....

He still has an issue with navigation commands not being given though!

I've suggested checking the 'Off/Dynamic/On' setting as well as the nav volume sliders and pressing the right round button to force a spoken command.

Anything else to check or try?

As above, quite clearly spoke too soon as when tested, I get no spoken commands.

One day I will get this sorted!

I have tried changing the settings with no luck.

When earlier trying to load v9 maps, I did try a master reset in order to try reloading maps.

I now don't know if it's a hardware, software, maps or coding issue but I have no voice notifications when using navigation.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, I am so close to getting this sorted now!

One thought - when I checked mine tonight and under the hard button tone menu, navigation settings there is the setting KB mentioned above, but above that there is also a volume setting for announcements so could this be set to mute???

Thanks for the suggestion Adam, I have just tried this but still I have no voice guidance.

Karl has suggested if i have another go at firmware updates, to activate 'Software Downgrade' first in the hidden menu.

I could then try again with 4020 or even 3810 firmware as there are very few differences between both.

Karl has also suggested v.8 maps on top as this again gives virtually the same performance and features as v9.

I think I may go down this route but am still waiting on some v8 maps that were sent 1st class last week and haven't yet arrived.

For anyone who is interested, I took Karl's advice and now have the following hardware, software and maps:

Would welcome anyone's opinions or thoughts but I now have voice guidance and everything else with the exception of volume control on the mfsw.

Bet you are (almost) relieved now.

Hopefully adamal will be along soon with a simple solution for you.

Yep!

Jon, goto

Adam,

His is a 3T0...A HW: 06 - exactly the same as mine.

He's also on 3810 at present (although the instal of that failed and he had to use the firmware recovery disc to get it to complete).

He does have voice control and audible navigation instructions - so that's an improvement.

Is he OK to use the 4020 firmware fix if he is on 3810?

Its a 3xxx/4xxx fix so yes.  Given what you say about the age of the unit, in this case I am not convinced it will work but it will do no harm as it just swaps some files around to their correct locations. Admittedly they may already be in the right place, but with all the installs that have occurred in this case it is probably worth a go.

Thanks Adam, I will give this a go on Thursday and report back here.

Hi Adam, this link seems to be broken. I have been on the site but can't find the download. Any chance you can repost the links? Many thanks.

Thanks mannyo
