Guide: Upgrading Columbus firmware and maps

Featured Replies

I think that was the company I contacted direct a year or so ago about the legitimacy of their discs.

Not surprisingly the response, although polite, did not answer the question.

That leads me to believe that you are buying an illegally copied version that will almost certainly work, but would be illegal.

Someone I know bought a disc from them not too long ago. It was a nicely printed disc, in a nice dvd box with a nice printed (copy) label. It didn't work... I sorted him a disc which did.

@KBPhoto

Do you now have access to 7-digit postcode entry?

Yes I do thanks.

My excuse is that on my previous car the enter destination via postcode was on a separate menu to enter by address.

Thanks

Eased to hear you've worked it out. All sat navs have their quirks.

I've had 7-digit entry since I bought my Columbus in 2011 with v7.2 maps and 28xx firmware.

I wish to upgrade the firmware and maps on my Columbus satnav filled to a 2011 Skoda Superb.

I was unable to access the hidden menu, but removing the unit from the dash, I see:

 3T0 035 680A, HW H52, SW 2844

I have found an iso image for the version 11 maps, but am somewhat confused as to which version of the firmware I should use?  I see that it has been issued for a number of different hard disk sizes and partitioning schemes - don't want to load the wrong one and lose everything on the disk ...

Thanks in advance

Dave

The ISO of the maps will be an illegal download.

The firmware will need a slightly larger map partition than usual. Have a look back through this thread for links to the modified firmware.

If suggest 4020 as all 4120 gains is radio text but loses the ability to display speed cameras (although this may have been fixed with v.11 maps).

What was the issue with speed cams? I have had 4120 for a few months now with v9, v10 and v11 maps and have had speed camera POIs installed ok with all three map versions.

Speed and light cameras are not showing on the map of my 4102 3T0...A Columbus (they were fine on the 4020 firmware).

I used the same v.9 map disk. The only difference being the firmware.

I can choose to show the cameras in the POI selector, but no POI's show on the actual map.

Strange never had any problems with mine. I update them every few weeks using the POI creater on the VW website. Even have the audible warnings via the PGPSW CamerAlert app and the bluetooth in the car.

There's perhaps the solution. I used the VW v.9 disc with speed camera database built in to the disc files.

Your's are 'aftermarket', so to speak.

Yeah that could be the difference..... PGPSW camera database it is then. ;)

V9 maps with speed cams embedded are created in a different (old) format. The newer firmware reads the new DB3 POI database information but doesn't read the older type. You need a new maps disc with POI embedded, or you can load the POI in from an SD card.

Dealer just replaced the Columbus in my Superb.  Replacement says:

 3T0 035 680C, HW H55, SW 3984

I believe that this can be upgraded to firmware 5269.  Is that correct?  Is 5274 also a valid option?

What size hard disk does this one have?  the 40GB, or the 30GB?

Many thanks in advance

Dave

You will have a 40Gb hard disc.

Firnware could be updated to any really if you fancy it, but there's nothing much to be gained from going much higher then you have at the moment. 4120 will give you a few more features like radio text perhaps, but no massive "quantum leaps" in performance or functions really after that. I've not seen anyone manage to get 5274 working without issues yet (or rather I've only seen people who have gone to 5274 report problems) so I wouldn't be pushing the boundaries too much. It works, there's nothing much to be gained from making it work more better, and there are pitfalls if you try and fail.

As long as the maps are up to date that's more important.

Thank you - I'll stick 5269 on it ... and update the maps :)

Cheers

Hello all,

i already made once an upgrade to my system myself to this state:

For information:

Deliverypart: 3t0035680E

HW-Version: H61

SW-Version: 3984

Map version: 7920

My Questions now:

What is the latest sw version i can install?

What is the latest map version i can install?

Thanks for your help and infos

It looks a similar vintage to mine which I've updated to firmware 5270 and maps 8117 (v11).

There are 5274 firmware versions around but I haven't found a good one yet so leave that for now.

Also, there may be v12 maps coming available in the next couple of weeks or so but v11 is a lot better than your v9.0 (with cameras).

  • 2 weeks later...

Just checked my Columbus - details below:-

Deliverypart: 3t0035680K

HW-Version: H10

SW-Version: 5238

Map version: 7918

I'm not sure whether I need to update either Maps or Firmware. Can anybody advise?

Andy

Firmware is fine. Maps could be updated by a couple of years or so.

  • 4 weeks later...

V12 maps are now available.... Western Europe is v8195.

Yep, been installing them for a couple of months or so now. :nerd:

Guys,  I've just installed a Columbus, I can't for the life of me get the maps to install to the hard drive.  When I have the map DVD in it works fine, I can copy music to the hard disk but can't seem to get it to copy the maps....  Am I being a bit dumb and missing something...?

HW-Version H26

SW-Version 6270

Map Version DVD 8195

Thanks

Dave

EDIT:  Not sure if it makes any difference, I've got an SSD installed in mine....

What happens when you insert the dvd? Does it ask if you want to copy the maps or use the dvd? What happens when you press the eject button? Does it give you a warning that the maps are still copying and you can choose one of three options (Continue, Notify, or Eject).

When I start up on a morning after 30 / 40 seconds it says 'Please insert navigation DVD' I insert disk and with in 30 seconds maps & nav work.  It doesn't ask about copying the maps or ask anything about using the DVD.  When I press the eject button the disk pops out and shortly after the nav stops working.  Nope it doesn't say anything about still copying, never seen the three options....

Thanks

Dave

So. it's not actually trying to copy the maps at all, it's just using the dvd from the machine.

Can I ask, from the data you've posted earlier on, you say you have maps version 8195 on the unit. Why are you trying to install maps anyway? Where did you get the unit from (don't say Spain...)?
