Guide: Upgrading Columbus firmware and maps

I think before any of the gurus are going to be able to help you, you'll need to first specify exact what Skoda media unit you have in your car. Is it a Columbus, can you access the version menu when holding down the Setup button, if so what version is displayed etc.

The failure of installation could simply be the fact that you're using the wrong firmware for your media unit model.

Version 11 installed without any problems whatsoever - job done :)

Hi All

Apologies if this has already been covered but I'm a newbie here. I recently picked up 2011 Superb Estate which I love.

I want to update the Columbus firmware and maps.

The secret menu is not enabled but I've had a look at the unit and I have the following details

3T0 035 680A

HW H42

SW 2724

Which would be the best firmware version for me to download and do I need the secret menu and VIM(whatever that is) enabled beforehand.

Any help would really be appreciated.

You should be ok to go to straight to 4120 at www.rnsfirmware.com.

You will lose maps though and will need to reinstall at least v7.2 or higher (higher preferably) to get full functionality. You will also need to reload any music.

VIM is video in motion and means a dvd will play on the move. Completely illegal and stupid, but I think you get it anyway and so be careful not to use it! The secret menu gets enabled anyway.

Adam

I agree with Adam (having done it myself on the same age / model Columbus).

Wow

Thanks for the speedy response, very much appreciated.

I'm sure I saw in another thread that it might be wise to upgrade to firmware 3810 first, is this required before going to 4120 and if it is recommended do either of you happen to have a link to that firmware.

Its not necessary mate. People have gone straight to 4 series from 1 series without issue.

Cheers, I thinks I'll give it go.

Do you think it'll work if I burn the iso file onto a CD rather than CD or could I use an SD card?

Cd or dvd should both work but burn slowly. Technically I'm sure its possible to use an SD card somehow but I have not seen a method to force a firmware read off a card, only a map update.

Note you create a disc from the iso rather than simply copy the file. Use free software like imgburn or similar.

Adam

It is possible to do it from an SD card, but it's a lot of effort to save a CD/DVD.

AFAIK you still need a CD to start the process but it then forces it to look for the large files on the SD slot.

I looked at it recently when helping so done out, but we both decided it was too much effort.

many thanks guys for your help, firmware updated

However maps and tmc gone  - presumably these two are linked.

If I reload the original map disk V7 can I then simply update the map software by downloading say V10 onto an sd card or DVD

OR

can I download a complete set of current maps V11 I think?

Yes you can use v7 for now but it wont be fully functioning. Reload v10 or v11 once you have it and jobs a good un.

OK thanks.

Hello I am getting a May 2011 octavia vrs and it has the Columbus head unit. I'm no good with this sort of text and it scares the bejesus out of me. I get the car next thursday and will be manchester for a few days before going back to SW scotlandmis there anybody local-ish that could help with firmware and maps.

Thanks Ian

Hello, new to this forum.

I have a Columbus unit, 3T0 035 680 A, HW H52, SW 2844.

Through the forums advise I downloaded EU_4120_FW_70_25_5 and burnt to many different DVDs and CD's, even bought the legendary Tesco ones. so far every time i put the disk it comes up with a CD/DVD error and my bin is slowly getting heavier.

Have tried with keys in and out. I don't have the extended radio menu.

I am using Astro burn lite at the slowest speed, have tried burning them with both options UDF and ISO9660.

The local garage have offered to do it for £60. I would rather try all options before descending to this if possible.

Any advise welcome

Use imgburn (free program) at the slowest burn speed possible. Also tick the box to "verify" the disc when finished burning. And I use Verbatim or Memorex with no problems at all.

+1

Thanks Rustynuts,

That seemed to sort the problem, all updated maps back in. A few nervy moments

You guys should create a sticky thread with a master list of Columbus models and their corresponding firmware versions to load.

Hi

Just took delivery of my new Skoda (Superb 2011). So brand new to forum

All is good but noticed that SatNav did not allow me to enter postcodes as a destination and this started me on a journey that has bought me to this forum.

Learnt a lot so I have a general idea of what I need to do.

My system

3T0035680E

H55

3984

7551 Maps.

What I am still not clear on is if I follow the guide as per the post at the top of this thread or go through the process that Camberley_Chris (thanks Chris) did, it appears I will need new maps.

But just not clear where I can get those maps from.  Do I just ask a dealer to borrow some ?

Any advice

Thanks

Chris

Dealers will ask you for [insert silly amount of money here] to update your maps for you, and then will probably not give you the latest ones. Also, it gives them the opportunity to **** something up, and I'm a firm believer of limiting those possibilities.

Whereabouts in Yorkshire are you?

7551 maps equates to v.7.2

You will have postcode entry. You should have 7 digit postcode entry.

Are you looking in the right place to enter it?

Pres 'Nav' > 'New Destination' > 'Address' > 'City'. Enter postcode there.

It is possible that (if that does;t work) you may have to change the country that it is searching in by going through the Nav > New Destination > Country.

These menus may not be exactly correct depending upon your firmware / map version and my memory as my Columbus is not in a vehicle at present.

Hi

@Rustynuts, I am in Wehterby.

@KBPhoto.  Thanks!  Not obvious, but I guess I should have read the manual, but who has time for that ?

Thanks

Chris

@KBPhoto. Thanks! Not obvious, but I guess I should have read the manual, but who has time for that ?

It's not obvious. Mine says 'City/P.code' but earlier FW only said 'City'.

Do you now have access to 7-digit postcode entry?

Looking at a map upgrade for the RNS510 (having just driven many miles 'off road' due to old maps), I see that there is a website called www.satnavstore.com claiming to sell the latest DVD maps reduced from £49.99 to £24.99

Are these 'OK' disks? At this price, it seems worth a  try but has anyone used these suppliers, and if so, what were the results?

Thanks!
