but definitely would not[/i'] flash someone who I decided was "going too slow"... :)

Absolutely. I'll only do it if someone has a clear area to pull in and is hogging the outside lane, never to try and make them go faster, that is loutish behaviour.

I hope that i never put anybody in the situation where they feel it necessary to flash me on any large stretch of carrageway or motorway because i am sat in an inapropriate lane. I try never to sit in an inapropriate lane when not overtaking.

If i am in a situation whereby some complete and utter ****** is say sat in the outside lane and not overtaking i follow a three step procedure

1, wait. They may not have looked in their mirror for the past five miles!

2, give a little flash to make them aware that they are driving without due care and attention and then wait some more

if they still fail to move over ie what i would consider dangerous driving on a motorway then i would move on to step 3

3, full beam baby!!!!

I will at no point resort to any of the following

Driving very close (up their ****)

or

undertaking

I would however if the road was empty and it was appropriate to do so, sound the horn just incase they have visual difficulties.

Step three has only been reached around five times in the past five years, Ive used my horn once on an old dear in the outside lane of the second busiest motorway in the uk doing 40mph with no one else for miles around!!!!!!!

It can cause unnecessary stress to the culprit however which may result in a torrent of verbal abuse and hand jestures and in extreme cases either heavy braking on their behalf or chasing you (again with hand jestures included). A diplomatic responce is usually required to counteract this. I recomend the wave and smile approach as you pass them by, usually this will confuse them long enough for you to disapear in to the distance :D

I won't flash them, but I am a closet german and it's illegal over there to flash someone out of the way, or use threatening gestures. I am a left hand indicator man as it seems more polite ...... ish

I mean't right hand indicator :) see, told you I was a closet german.

I think undertaking is foolish. I'd rather someone be flashing the hell out of me behind and waiting for me to pass someone in the other lane than them try and move into a slower moving lane to get past.

I often speed up just to box people in who are trying to undertake because they think 80 is too slow and that they can nip through the gap infront of me before I overtake by undertaking. It's wrong, but proves a point.

On a side note; 100% of these people who have tried undertaking me after about 0.5 seconds of waiting right up my jacksie have been BMW drivers.

In the situation you mention yes it is foolish but what about when there's just you and a car in the outside lane with no other vehicles around?

There's less danger, but it's still illegal. So I'd rather flash at them and get them to move over. In that situation 90% of people just don't realise they're doing it, so letting them know saves more people having to undertake.

For the 10% who come back out, they really should learn to drive.

Is it illegal though, if you don't change your speed and your car is the only 'traffic' in that lane?

We need one of our more "well connected" members to respond here, but AFAIK it is not illegal, but if you were seen to be carving up the traffic you might get done for DDC or Dangerous driving. There's always the danger that undertaking will spook the target into a sudden change of lane just when you DON'T want them to, because they suddenly realise they're in the wrong lane. Bump!

If anyone flashed me I would move over.

However i've only been flashed once... last week I was going down M3, loads of trucks and HGVs doin about 65 in slow lane.. so i got into middle lane and stuck at round just under 70.... bright spark in merc came from nowhere and sat right up my chuff as if he wanted me to move out of way flashed me twice. Silly pratt had a lane to go round me in but oviously thought differently.

Guess what... when i did pull over... off he shot still in middle lane.

You did right. If this guy is hogging the lane then he deserved to get flashed and I would of used my horn too !! Its NOT rude. Call it education if you like !!LOL

but it's still illegal

Of dubious legality, but, as per section 139 of the highway code:

If the queue on your right is moving more slowly than you are, you may pass on the left

If you are travelling in the inside lane and someone is in the lane to the right of you, in theory, it is OK to stick to your lane and "undertake". Great caution should be taken when doing it however.

As for getting out of the way, the Highway Code is very specific:

Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.
Dual carriageways

116: On a two-lane dual carriageway you should stay in the left-hand lane. Use the right-hand lane for overtaking or turning right. If you use it for overtaking move back to the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.

117: On a three-lane dual carriageway' date=' you may use the middle lane or the right-hand lane to overtake but return to the middle and then the left-hand lane when it is safe. [/quote']

and section 145

145: Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass.

There are others, but I can't be ar5ed to look 'em up :D

Nice one Eddy,

This is exactly what alerts people to move over without causing undue aggressive responses.

The other car shouldn't be there but flashing your lights is always going to be seen as aggressive in this situation and something I try to avoid doing. I prefer to put my right indicator on to let people know I want to pass but I'll only do that if I've been held up for quite some time when the left lane is clear.
The only people I've had flash me tended to be in more expensive cars (BMWs, Jags), and have only done it in heavy traffic. Each time I've made a point of staying in the outside lane (we don't do much 3-lane stuff round here), occasionally checking my washers...

Why is it that your windscreen always seem to get dirty when there are people right behind you?

Anyone flashes me they better be young and pretty damn looking, oh and female helps. Though, I'm glad they are saving it at the mo, I'm not single and not interested ta!

I tend to give a reasonable amount of time for people to shift back out of the fast lane. I never, ever drive on a motorway or A-road without my headlights on dipped beam. That way I am clearly visible.

If there are plenty of opportunities to move over effortlessly, I will get annoyed. Then there will possibly be a little flash. Other times you just have to be patient.

It's not worth tailgating to try and make your point IMHO ;)

If it's a 3-laner and they stick in the fast lane I will either drop into slow lane & go past, which I suppose isn't allowed by law, but imho safer than trying to 'force' the person to move.

The situation is different on a 2-laner, it's just not safe to go past 'the wrong way'. It has caused me to have to bite my proverbial tongue though, sometimes.

If someone is ****ting around in the outside lane at under the NSL and the inside lane is clear I'll flash the lights - politely - a few times. If they don't take the hint they can expect a long flash and the Fiams

I find that just giving them a little tap focuses their attention :D

I was fairly upset when he did it to me - but he only managed it because he did it to me AND the dawdler in front of me in one manoeveur. (however that word is spelt)

I find in the Furby that you can lurch forward quite quickly, dropping back and doing that tends to let them know you aren't going to box them in - you'll be past sooner than they thought.

Whoever said about using the hard shoulder - be very careful, there's all sorts of crap'll give you a puncture on there!

Using the sholder wouldnt just affect you, you could flick debris on to the motorway, smash a windscreen, kill people etc etc (not a good idea)

I believe the comment about using the hard shoulder is what's commonly known as a joke.

Anyone know where I can get me some bull bars for the Octy? Bumper is looking a tad scuffed at the mo :D

I looked into this but instead I modified a removable towbar to fit the front, if you clip the rear quarter of car in front just right they spin nicely out of the way leaving the road ahead nice and clear. It also means they are facing me for when I flash the lights.

I would undertake someone before i flashed - but i would flash eventually as 99.9% of the time drivers know you are there, they just choose to stay where they are - VVANKERS !
