Another central locking thread

Featured Replies

When I came back to the car this evening I found the passenger side front door hadn't locked when I locked the car this morning (using key in driver's door). Once in the car I locked them all on the buttons then unlocked them with the driver's door button and they all unlocked and then I locked them all again with the button. After a few goes the passenger side fails to lock again. Tried it all again but using the passenger side button and all seemed ok.

Later tried locking the passenger door again and it locked but without locking the others then after a few more goes I got the button stuck in the locked position and the door wouldn't even unlock from the outside with the key - completely solid, mechanical resistance.

Back to the drivers door and they all unlocked including the passenger one but I have managed to get it stuck again since.

It's now all free but the sticking lock is what worries me - if the door gets stuck locked like this it's obviously a serious safety issue. It's most likely a problem with the passenger door mechanism rather than the wiring, isn't it? It creaks and whines as it works and seems to lag behind the other doors which suggests something needs greasing but the stuck lock seems to point to some linkage breaking down and jamming.

If anyone has had similar and fixed it I'd appreciate any advice please.

it is a mechanical issue.

wd40 then grease well all joints and actuators.

Sounds to me like you need a new 5wire motor or you can make a rear one fit but only has two wires if you fit a rear one it will not lock all the car from passanger door but if lock from drivers door all will lock I had the same problem on my funs c/l and just used a rear motor in passenger side I have remote cl so all doors lock...

Had to take a day off to wait in for BT engineer so finally got the door card off. All the linkages look fine, all the nylon connections are sound and everything's greased and free moving.

The motor on the other hand is looking like the obvious culprit - it lags behind the other doors and wheezes as it moves. I've lifted the rubber bellows off the top and squirted WD40 in but this hasn't helped. In fact it's now not working most of the time. It still opperates the central locking when I lock from that side but doesn't respond to locking from the other door.

Is replacement just a case of undoing the two screws on the reverse side and unhooking it from the link to the lock?

In the meantime I'll disconnect it's power as this at least gets the other three doors working correctly and I'll just have to do that one the old fashioned way. (It stops all the central locking when it gets out of phase and if I don't notice I end up leaving the car with some of the doors unlocked.)

Here (hopefully) is a photo of the culprit. I put a mirror inside the door so this is the view you'd get if you cut a hole through the outside of your driver's door although this is the passenger side reflected in the mirror. The heads of the two screws holding the box to the frame are visible plus the threaded shaft of a third holding the frame to the door. The connection to the lock comes out above the rubber bellows but is hidden behind the frame in this view. The electrical connections come out from the bottom of the box. (Back of the car is to the left.)

Ah yes, interesting... Mine does exactly the same a yours, the passenger side one sometimes works, and sometimes has a mind of it's own..

take it out.

I usually take out the whole lock.

I find it easier.

then do a last proper clean/grease of servo and connectors.

without putting all back reconnect the servo and play with door buttons.

if not happy, buy new servo or SH from scrapyard.

Thanks, I wondered if that was the case. Those screws are impossible to reach with a conventional screw-driver and I couldn't see/feel how the linkage hooks through the top so removing the whole carrier and lock makes a lot of sense. Things do seem to have improved over night - the WD40 must have had time to soak everywhere inside the box but I'll keep an eye on it.
