VRS TDI minor issues

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Got my VRS TDI DSG Estate last Tuesday (arrived 4 weeks late) which replaces my 2007 Fabia vRS.  In my one week of ownership I've noticed a few niggles which I wonder if anyone else has seen...

1. When I use the screen washer the headlamp washers operate too (normal), but they don't fully retract after use and I need to push them back in when I park  It's only 5mm or so but annoying on a car of this caliber.

2. I ordered the Canton sound system. The sound is poor and the subwoofer appears not to be working at all.  It just seems a bit 'tinny' sounding.  Disappointing really.

3. The auto dimming rear view mirror seems completely ineffective.  Headlights from cars following me are blinding either with the button pressed/green light lit or not.

4. Turn signals do not always self cancel.  Only noticed this a couple of times but the wheel was turned a good 90 degrees each time and the indicators just kept on blinking.

5. DPF regeneration.  Smell of burning and fan staying on for ages after a journey.  I've read the DPF regen thread now so that one, at least, appears normal.

6. DSG VERY slow to engage a gear when changing from neutral.  I've been hooted at a couple of times already when the cars in front move off and I'm still waiting for the sodding gears to engage. This is my 1st DSG car so may be 'normal' for this type of gearbox.

7. In auto mode the car often shows D2 when it's crawling along.  I speed up, hear in change up and it still shows D2.  Occasionally it drops to D1 but most of the time it says D2.  Above 2nd gear it seems fine.

Anyone else experienced any of these issues? Does Skoda have any QC issues (why were there so many build delays - did they maybe miss out on some checks in an attempt to catch up)?

I have a trip to the Pyrenees booked for the end of next week so I'll pop it back to the dealer after I get back.

Cheers

Rick

sorry to hear about your problems Rick. Not sure if you're aware but the situation you list above is a classic sign that you've interupted a regen which if you do this repeatedly will result in you getting the warning light come on that if it doesn't complete a regen could end up with it going into limp mode resulting in you having to have a forced regen done at the dealers.

Have you seen this which expalins a lot about dpfs from page 60 on

Thanks for the link.  Very useful reading.  I'll print it off for safe keeping.  Now I know I can easily work around it.  Just surprising it's regenerating already with less than 200 miles on the clock and only a week old!

I found that the turning  signals do not always self cancel...

and the headlight washers dont always go back in on the right side of the car...

I dont have a Canton sound system but have you set it up on sound set up on screen..!!

My first regen was at 63 mikes and a lot of the golf owners reported the same. Seems to be the engine settling into its routine and perfectly normal.

Headlight washers not retracting is a known fault

Not sure on the others sorry but check with the dealer.

seems quite a common thing with the mk3's. From what I've seen on here they soon settle down though. look on the bright side if you get back home and tickover is up to around 1000 rpm it means the regen is still going....so the best solution is to stick it in reverse without switching the engine off and go for another spin :giggle:

Thanks - yes I have tried adjusting.  I can take the subwoofer from -9 to +9 (I assume either dB or just an incremental setting relating to the gain added on the bass) and it makes no noticeable difference.

Now there's a good idea :D

Dealer should be able to sort out your washers.  As for the DSG, some say it is not best suited to the TDI and can get a bit confused. When at traffic lights leave the DSG in drive with your foot on the brake, I have not tried the handbrake.

From the manual

Stop

Fully depress and hold the brake pedal and bring the vehicle to a stop.

Keep holding the brake pedal until driving is resumed.

The selector lever position

N does not have to be selected when stopping for a

short time, such as at a cross roads.

With regards the DSG 'box it's best to leave it in "D" the whole journey, including at junctions, traffic lights etc - this will ensure a) the stop start system operates (foot on the brake to activate), and B) it's in gear ready to go as soon as you accelerate - there'll be no hooting at you then !

Enjoy your Pyrenees trip - remember, into "Drive" on leaving home & leave it there until you switch off !

This is a VRS common issue. Dealers should be aware of this. They will do a small modification which allows washers to retract fully.

Sound from the sub improves after a few weeks use - I think that there are a few comments in other threads confirming that the Canton sub takes a while to bed-in and loosen up.

When you set it up, try altering the Canton surround settings and bass/mid/treble settings in addition to the sub level. Also try using a cd or high quality mp3 etc that sounds good in a hifi in the house for a comparison.

However, if you were expecting the sub to give you kudos 'down with the kids' on a retail park car park you will be a bit disappointed!

I wasn't very impressed with my canton to start with, I spent a while tweaking it, there is a separate option to turn the gain up on the sub. Im quite happy with it now and hits the low bass quite nicely. It will get better with time.

Thanks.  Most of my commute is nose to tail slow moving traffic. I tend to use neutral at traffic lights and stick the handbrake on (habit from 33 years driving).  I'll try what you suggest.

To be fair, on the move the system works well and is not jerky like the  Auto Express description.  It's not run in yet so maybe it won't be as smooth when I press on a bit ;). I went for the DSG as an alternative to having to be on and off the clutch all the time in traffic.

Yep will try that.  Force of habit from many years driving manual cars.  Neutral, handbrake on....will take some effort to stop doing that :)

Great.  I'll pop it back in one day when I'm passing.  The dealer here is excellent and the main reason for buying Skoda.

OK I will try being a bit more patient :)  Kudos with the kids.... Too old for all that :D

Yeah I have fiddled with all the settings (including the surround sound which helped a bit). I'll try a bit of patience and see if it gets any better over the next month or so.

Thanks everyone.

Thereby confirming the folly of DPFs actually being better for the environment only in theory not in practice lol.

Cantons a good upgrade particularly at £400 but I think people probably get it in their minds that its going to be a huge improvement getting carried away by the fact that its made in combination with a high end german audio manufacturer, has a big amp, different speakers and a centre speaker and subwoofer.

Its of course going to be an improvement on the standard set up but its not going to be like sitting in front of 1k's worth of half decent separate components and speakers in your home.

A car just isnt the best place acoustically for music, also these improved speakers sit in the factory locations with no additional sound deadening (im fairly sure) and the sub is just a plastic bass reflex box sat in the boot and nothing particularly fancy.

Certainly not suggesting for a minute its a bad system and not worth the money but I think theres an element of false expectations with some.

For example my Dad recently bought an M135i that has the HK system in it. 12 speakers (actually 9 but some of them are co-axials and apparently classify as individual speakers) 360w amp, 2x 8.5" bass trasducers under tbr front seats etc etc....was really looking forward to listening to it and when I did I was a little disappointed.

I love hard hitting dance/house/electronic music and whilst it was v clear, crisp and very loud (you could just keep cranking it without distortion) there just wasnt enough low end bass for my liking. Arguably whilst the system in my Mk2 Octavia is vastly inferior in paper I actually prefer the sound because of the low end bass its able to produce...of course it gets muddy pretty quick if tou start trying to overdrive the low rent stock woofers but it serves my needs well.

The only time id say a stock system ought to blow your socks off is if you spec a very high end system on a vastly more premium car....Mark Levinson on a Lexus or Bose/B&O on a new Audi A6 for example.

1. It's a known fault since very early cars. Mine does it too. Apparently quick fix at the dealers or just keep pushing them in until they stop doing it by themselves.

2. The system needs some time to be run in, like an engine. It will get much better and for me now, I've had to tone the sub-woofer down a bit.

3. Haven't had this. Could be faulty...

4. Some other people on here have complained of the same thing. Probably a fault with the stalk mechanical pinion inside the steering column. Needs a fix from the dealer.

5. Normal, but don't interrupt it too often. Could cause DPF issues in the long run.

6. Leave it in D at all times when you are driving the car. Put it in N only if you're spending some time parked somewhere and you still want the engine running. Remember the handbrake, if on a slope. And better yet, put it in P. ;)

7. DSG boxes can produce some clunks at low speeds/gears which might not imply a gear change. Keep track of it and if it gets bad, talk to the dealer.

Sitting at traffic lights at night with the DSG in Drive and your foot on the footbrake means your brake lights are illuminated and a nuisance to the driver behind you.  Very inconsiderate and a fail on many advanced driving tests.  Yes, I know many drivers do so but that doesn't make it right - "Its an automatic" seems to be the excuse for many drivers that do this.  I have a DSG and it is no more effort, or delay, to apply the handbrake and slip into Neutral than it was on my previous manual - in fact it's less as I no longer have to depress a clutch pedal.

If it is obvious that I will only be stopped for around 5 seconds or less then I leave D selected and use the footbrake - otherwise always N and handbrake.

Lets not have this discussion again, OK? The poor horse is dead already. What I've stated resides nicely in the manual.

I do exactly the same with my other DCT equipped car, handbrake on and pop it into neutral at traffic lights. Also takes the strain off the clutches, trying to propel the car with the brakes on. The manual for that car actually advises this technique.Again this car also can clunk on occasions, I find it most obvious if you are slowing down at a junction, see a gap and then quickly accelerate, it think it is the transmission's "brain" making its mind up which gear to select and then abruptly changing to it.

1. As others have said it is a known fault. Dealer fix with a slight realignment of the bumper - mine was done on Monday.

2. Don't have the Canton upgrade so can't comment.

3. Is the little green light on the mirror? Underneath the mirror in the centre is a button to turn on/off the auto dimming function. If this does not alter anything then back to the dealer.

4. I don't have the turn signal issue, but suggest this is a dealer issue.

5. Has happened to me once in 8,000 miles. It's unfortunate but the car does not know when you are going to end your journey so just has to be accepted as one of things I guess.

6. Leave it in D if you are going to be momentarily stopped. When you put it back in drive the g/box has to engage the gear which will take a short moment.

7. If it is a concern speak with the dealer when you get the other issues sorted.

Hope this helps.

3. The auto dimming rear view mirror seems completely ineffective.  Headlights from cars following me are blinding either with the button pressed/green light lit or not.

Sorry for your problems but extra glad I went TSI and manual. Many problems with my previous Diesel as well, not suited to my short mileage

Is this a standard vrs feature? How to set it up?

Yes but there's no setup, just a button under the mirror to switch it on or off.

Is this a standard vrs feature? How to set it up?

I can't find it listed in the options in the brochure so I guess it's standard in the UK.

Set up - press button, green light come on (ON) press button, green light goes off (OFF). Simples! :)
